Watch Out for Fireballs! 257: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Premium)

We're big fans of Deus Ex, so there's joy in covering more of the series on the show. Human Revolution came out to a split reaction, which is to be expected. How can you please Deus Ex fans? We're a small sample size, but in our opinion, this is how you please Deus Ex fans. The story is smaller in scale and the jank has been polished away, but this is a fun immersive sim with an engrossing story and a beautiful aesthetic. So we're on board.

This episode is about the Director's Cut version of the game, so we talk about the improved boss fights and the Missing Link DLC.

Very excited to hear your thoughts about this game. I mostly ignored the story, but became addicted to the upgrade and stealth system. I also liked how a portion of it takes place in Montreal. Too bad you can’t go out and drink until 4 in the morning with Americans, or order poutine in your broken, grade 12 French.

The original Deus Ex is one of my all time favorites, but Human Revolution didn't really hit for me until I picked up the DX version a few years later. However this game did produce one of my favorite immersive sim moments, carefully stacking nearly every box and barrel on the map into a giant tower to shortcut half the level. Glad you guys finally covered it!

Didn’t know my dream month of WOFF would be Simpsons: Hit & Run and Deus Ex: HR out of nowhere, but I am here for it.

Going back and replaying this game is kind of melancholy after playing through Mankind Divided. Human Revolution just hits so many great story beats and makes just enough gameplay concessions to make your skill choices feel somewhat meaningful. Whenever you duders get around to MD (in several years, I'm sure), I'd be interested hear how you feel about it. IMO, Mankind Divided is a couple dozen hours of missed potential and really seals up the gunplay/gameplay angles, but that's *NOT* what I'm playing a Deus Ex game for. Either way I've been waiting for an episode on this game since you did the original way back in 2013. Cheers!
