Watch Out for Fireballs! 270: The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (Premium)

There are really two Ocarina of Times. The one that came out in 1998 that's undeniably groundbreaking and an aesthetic triumph, and the one that you can play in 2020 that has a lot of ups and downs. We give this sacred cow an honest evaluation in this episode.

I dont think i ever really liked the gameplay of the game, but loved the vibes, so to speak, and vibes go a long way for me, personally. I dont know if Id ever replay it,though

You could say OOT is the Dark Souls of Zelda

Joshua Ruiz

But yeah very accurate assessment of OOT. I think part of the frustration in revisiting OoT it's influenced so many other games that mainly feels primitive instead of unique or innovative.

I'm glad WOFF is one step closer to doing an episode on the New Vegas of Zelda that is Majoras Mask.

For what it's worth, this game means a lot to me and I think you guys did an extremely fair job. Shame it didn't age better for you (and admittedly it's been years since I've replayed it, so maybe I'd have the same experience) but thanks for a great episode :)

I still love this game to bits, but listening to this made me recognize the haze that nostalgia cast over my perception of it. Gameplay-wise, it's definitely not great. I always found certain bits annoying, but I never bothered to really think about it too much and connect the dots so to speak. The music and aesthetic really do some heavy lifting, and I think it's largely thanks to those that I enjoy returning to Ocarina even so many years later. Anyway, great episode as usual. Was looking forward to this one, and you really delivered!

OoT is the biggest gulf between how i felt about a game as a kid and how i feel about it now. When i was 9 it was my absolute favorite, and felt big and mysterious. 3D Hyrule seemed like a place of endless possibilities. As an adult it’s kind of adorably quaint in how hard it tries to seem like this big adventure, but the actual game behind that feeling is bland and rote and, in retrospect, a dark portent of Nintendo’s Dork Age. Think you guys were totally fair and reasonable in how you covered it, and i’m looking forward to the eventual Majora episode. “Fun” fact — you CAN open the shortcut from Goron City to the Lost Woods early, you just have to know a trick the game inexplicably never teaches you: if you light a deku stick and touch it to a bomb flower, the flower ignites. I don’t bring this up to be like “shoulda used kukris lol”, quite the opposite — i think it’s infuriating that they hold your hand through basically everything else but won’t teach you this one weird tip to save time. I only learned it from playing Master Quest, after years of resetting the game to load back in Link’s house and then hoofing it all the way back to the gorons. Game’s got fucked up priorities

"Hey! Listen!" Was my message tone for years and now that I think of it I can't imagine why I did that to myself.

You guys were too kind to this crappy game. ;)

Brian Perkins

Your guys' takes are exactly what I am screaming at my computer every time people tweet demanding Nintendo remaster OoT for every new console. It was a great game when it came out, but it's already been remade a thousand different times in every adventure game since (not to mention essentially remade in every Zelda installment until BotW, and literally remade in the myriad OoT ports that already exist). However much you think OoT holds up, it's less than that. By modern standards it's slow, it's clunky, and by its success it's stunted an entire genre of games in many ways for twenty years to follow.

Inter-Party Conflict

Grew up to this game and can't wait to sit through this episode. I love that Link's not a Steven Segal big swingin' toxic hero, but a frequently terrified kid who picks up his sword and shield and fights anyway. Still got a Triforce on my desk and a little Link next to my little Solaire Edit: "Recorder of Continuity" deserves an actual round of applause. Lolled at my desk.
