Watch Out for Fireballs! 267: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (Premium)

They do not come in peace.

This month's premium Watch Out for Fireballs! is about XCOM: Enemy Unknown (and the Enemy Within expansion). This game is a masterpiece, and we take our time dining on the systems and the way they interlock. The aliens have made contact, and they do not come in peace. So it's time to mount the defensive and take the fight to their doorstep. The structure of this episode is a little strange, we admit, but we hope you're here to hear us geek out over tactics and such.

My god the discussion of the Nova Scotia mission gave me flashbacks. Great episode about one of my favorite series

This episode got me pretty interested in the series. I got Xcom 2 with War of Chosen on PS4 and it is very badly optimized for consoles. Really bad frame rates, audio bugs, menu lag. I've also read horror stories on forums about late game save corruption and crashes. Pretty disappointing. You also can't get refunds on PSN if you've even started a download of a digital title. Anyways that's my PSA. Great episode regardless! This is a podcast as service for me unfortunately.

I'd have a field day with this game on Switch.

I'm sure they cover this to some extent in the episode but XCOM:EU is streamlined in such a way that it is very accessible for newer players. Even if you're completely new to turn-based tactics game you'll get the hang of your options in no time the way it is laid out from the start and builds up from there. If the game or genre appeals to you then don't feel intimidated. Sure the game can be punitively hard on higher difficulties but there's no shame in starting at the bottom as a beginner.

I wish this would get remastered for current gen consoles

This is a real 'podcast as service' episode for me. I know I would probably like this kind of thing, but something keeps me from really getting deep into tactics games, even ones I love. While not the same, I've finally gotten Darkest Dungeon on the Switch. I've had a few failed runs in that, but if it's ever going to stick, now is the time. Permadeath is rough, but so is the RNG. That combination of high RNG swing and permanent consequences is one of the things that has kept me from really investing in something like XCOM. Hopefully I can break the spell and really learn to enjoy games like this.
