Bonfireside Chat 152: King's Field (Part 1)

This begins our coverage of King's Field, the first FromSoft game to come to the United States. Confusingly, this is King's Field II in Japan. You play as Alexander, a friend of the king who is sent to the treacherous island of Melanat to recover the lost Moonlight Sword. King's Field is a bracing game to play, if you can get over its antiquated presentation and design. The seeds of what we'd come to love about the Souls series are present here, and that is a surprising fact for a game released in 1996.

We cover the generalities and the first few areas in this episode. The next episode will cover the rest of the game.

King's Field 2 is a special interest of mine, so when I saw you were covering it I was ecstatic.

This game is something else. I bought a PS1 copy last year thanks to Bonfireside Chat, after playing Dark Souls Remastered. I wanted to see an earlier iteration on DS, and that is exactly what this is. It helps to not play a 3D souls-like for a while before diving into this one; the control scheme can seem restrictive in comparison. But last night it clicked for me and I started to get a foothold. Looking forward to following along.

Love going back to the older From games! I haven't played this one in a long time so reliving it through you is a lot of fun.

This game whips ass and is seriously underrated. It deserves to be viewed on the level of the NES classics imo — forward-thinking game design and ingenious use of limited assets. And, yknow, it’s the ancestor of the most popular genre of the 2010s. Glad you guys are covering it, hope lots of folks who listen give it a shot
