I was a kid around 5th-6th grade when sonic heroes and shadow were games and like I KNEW they were bad but I got them because sonic adventure 2 was like a lot of friends’ favorite game and it was like okay let’s get on this train. They were bad, I knew it, but I had them, and sorta liked them? No heroes sucked. But like idk shadow with a gun is so stupid I just remember having a decent albeit frustrating time. Haven’t played them since. So obviously not that fond of memories.

As a lifelong Sonic series fan, who once loved it in earnest but now appreciates it mainly for its furry trash appeal, it’s kind of a shame to me that this ended up being a competent buddy cop movie instead of a glorious trainwreck. Fixing the CGI was a mistake! I think they picked just about the most boring concept imaginable for a Sonic flick (and also, ACAB) and having that horrible tooth goblin be onscreen constantly would have made it into something really transcendently bad for me, instead of just “middle grade kids movie slightly elevated by Jim Carrey” At least onenice fact about the redesign is that they consulted with Tyson Hesse, the guy who did the animated intro movie/promo artwork for Sonic Mania and illustrated a bunch of the recent comics. If you’ve ever seen that silly fan comic with Nipples the Enchilada and ORIGINAL THE CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL (i think it got some play on Something Awful back in the day), he did that and is about as ascended a fan as one gets. Also, w/r/t Sonic not wearing pants — real life hedgehogs are of course extremely cute, much moreso than Sonic (my dark fan secret is i always liked Sonic himself the least. ive never figured out what the fuck is up with his weird uni-eye??). They also have a very unmissable and unmistakable hedgehog hog that you see often because they like to chill on their backs. Just to lend some extra color to James Marsden joking about Sonic sharts
