Call and Response: WOFF! Dispatch June 2020

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Sunday, June 14.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Cheers mate, absolute legend.

Not a question, but could I just give a shout out to the lovely folks in the Slack. I was having a real shitty time the other day, and one of the lovely users (I forget who—sorry) really talked me down. Thanks! Edit: actually, lightning round question. Have either of you had any fairly petty dating deal breakers? I was once put off someone by watching a film with them where they kept a sort of running question / commentary going over the top of it. "Uh-oh, I bet that's made him angry!" "That was funny, wasn't it?" etc. It was something I really wanted to see, not just a goofy background film, and that sort of put the kibosh on any future dates for me. So, what about you?

Lewis Shaw

Hey Elliot, the 'original' BFSC (before they came back with Sekiro) is all still free and available, so you just have to find and subscribe to the BonfiresideChat podcast.

Have either of y'all admired games based on technical accomplishments despite having bad gameplay? If so do you have any that stand out? For example while I also dislike Crash Bandicoot from a play experience, I'm impressed with a lot of the techniques the dev team created to optimize animation and level storage for early PS1 CDs.

Uncle64

Have you checked out the new souls games I think coming out next year mortal shell?

Killer Kab11

Thanks again for the Dreamfall episode! Just a couple of short fun questions: 1) Do you have any games you "regret" or are surprised that you spent so much time playing? For me, I still fondly reflect on my hundreds of hours playing World of Warcraft but am baffled how I was able to devote so much time. 2) I recently got back into Skyrim thanks to all the mods. do you have any games you would want to revisit or see reinvigorated with mods?

Thanks for being such consistent providers of wonderful and thoughtful content. I'm curious about your thoughts on mindfulness and gameplay. Specifically ways that your attention changes during different gaming experiences and how you think the internet has changed this. A number of times in your show you've described entering a flow state(often during 2D platforms) where you and your avatar seem joined at the hip; similarly, you've described some gameplay (like dungeon crawling in JRPGs) that have you searching for distraction (podcasts and the like). In my memories, my gaming life before smart phones was much more of the former and less of the latter, as if there was more space for me to allow myself to focus on the task at hand and overcome moments of distraction. Today gaming often takes place on the same devises we use for other tasks, with notifications that can pull us out. And so I have three questions: 1) Do you have anything that you do in your own gaming practice that more easily induces a flow state or do you think it's entirely dependent on the game's quality/type? 2) Do you agree with the idea that being online can hurt being present with your attention to the game? Do you think it has added value for gaming that offsets this? 3) What else about gaming, a game, or circumstances can influence being present and achieving that flow state?

G'day, Do think any games would make for a good TV series? I feel Deus Ex would has a lot to work with if done well; conspiracy, trans-humanism, late stage capitalism. Although the 'mechanical apartheid' did make me cringe, a lot of the live action stuff was done so well. I also would love to see an Alien tv series. Bonus Question: I was listening to the Baldurs Gate 2 podcast and musings on the Infinity Engine combat. I wonder if Gary still thinks turn based might not be the best for BG3 given the RTWP controversy of BG purists. Are you excited at first impressions and do you think Larian will be able to give it justice? Also is there a chance that you will re-upload the Dark Souls III BFSC stuff from 2016? It isn't available on sound cloud and I can't find it in my feed. I'm a late comer to DS3 and would love to hear what you had to say about it. I'm currently playing and listening to BSC Sekiro; I too went through the 7 stages of grief and whilst I'm still yet to 'git gud', I've gone from curling in a ball crying to slapping my knee with excitement when I get so close to beating a boss. Have a good one and black lives matter.

Best cats in fiction? I vote for Jonesy from Alien/Aliens.

Do you all have a “nope” list of games you know you’ll definitely never cover on the show? I assume 100+ hour JRPGs automatically get a spot on there for logistical reasons, but are there any others you can think of off the top of your heads that you know you’ll pass on?

Mark Mahler

(Greg here) Do you have any advice for getting people to watch you stream? As you guys know, I'm really busy in real life but I have some games I'd like to play but I'm on the fence about. I figure if people watch me that will give me incentive to play them, and it would be more fun for me to play them also. In the past when I've tried streaming I've given advanced notice on social media sites, but despite my best effort never got anyone to watch, and they weren't sucky games either (Ur-Quan Masters, Super Castlevania IV, Dishonored.)

Greg Polander

What's a gaming habit (for lack of a better term) you changed that was for the better? I don't recall which episode it was, but something y'all said went along the lines of "the game is balanced around consumables, so use them" and since then I had a light bulb moment, and I no longer hoard items in games - even in survival horror ones. I'm almost certain without this change of mindset I would've hated the weapon durability in Breath of the Wild, and been too conservative, and less expressive in Dishonored.

I'm a resident evil boy. I love the series so much. Since lockdown, I've found myself replaying through the entire numbered series and one of the revelations games, and they've got me thinking. Lately, cop protagonists and virus/pandemic plots don't sit the same way with me that they used to. I realize that I'm probably just playing the wrong games at the wrong time, but I imagine I'm probably not alone in that I don't really have the same tolerances for some of the series' go-to elements, and I'm not sure I ever will. I'm happy to see that re7 and re8 have been getting a little further away from those tropes, but they don't seem to be gone. My question is this: To you both, does resident evil have room for either law enforcement protagonists or pandemic/bio-terrorism stories anymore? What would you like to see instead? Alternative/Follow up: with cop protagonists and viruses being such big tropes in video games in general, how do you guys see these topics being handled in the future, across the medium. What would you like to see? Thanks! Stay safe and healthy, and fuck cops (except maybe the RPD).

Q&A: Kole, how do you decide which Patrons get thanked and when/in which order? Do you keep track to avoid repeats? A shameful confession: I find myself worrying I had my name read long ago only to be waiting for something that might've already happened or might not ever happen :( Anyways, as a working person, I sincerely appreciate all of the effort you guys pour into the network! Your labor has a meaningful positive impact on my everyday life! With lots of love from The Bay Area <3

Brett Johnson

What do you think will happen first, Dark Souls the movie or Dark Souls 4? Which would you prefer? What would you want to see from each if anything?

Matt DiTomaso

Hey guys, I know this isn’t BFSC, but with the Demons souls remake announcement, are you guys as worried as I am that they are going to go for more of a Ringed City difficulty rather than the difficulty of the original?

Cale Barber

What are your favorite pastries? I'm including cookies, cakes, brownies, etc as pastries as well.

Markus Blomer

Since we're in the wake of the Demon's Souls remake announcement, is it kosher if I drop a PSA? There's a very good private Demon's Souls server called The Archstones (thearchstones.com) that takes (in my experience, at least) less than 5 minutes to set up. Been seeing a lot of folks lament missing Demon's Souls online components, but the Archstones server is roughly as populated as the official one was in its final year, so that experience is still within reach. Also, they have a Patreon which only receives $57 a month, IMO pretty low for such a great public service. Just wanted to spread the word about a great bit of preservation, sorry if this isn't the right place for it! Anyway, Fuck Marry Kill: the Adjudicator, Maneater, and the second Maneater that comes in halfway through the fight?

Eric Nagurney

With everything that’s going on in the world with recent events. Old shows are being taken off publication etc. What are your views on whether older games that make fun, glorify or disrespect gender, race or any aspect of personal individuality should be taken down and made inaccessible? My view is that it should be the decision of the person consuming that, rather than someone else making that choice for me. Second question, are you lovers or haters of your own farts? I can be quite proud of a horrendous smell I create, but maybe I’m just weird. Love the show, love that you both are yourselves and don’t compromise. Thank you

Dan Sayer

Are there soundtracks you like from games you haven't played or haven't spent much time with?
