Bonfireside Chat 160: Dark Souls: Daughters of Ash (Part 1)

Our summer mod series begins with the big one: Daughters of Ash. Created by a user named Grimrukh, it purports to be what From would have made if they had an extra six months of development time. This is not strictly true. While there are some cut content features restored, the ambitious part of this mod is its extra story content and changes to the routes you take through the game. It's not all 100% successful, but we cannot deny that it's an impressive effort and worth your time if you're a fan of Dark Souls and feel like you've memorized it completely.

This is the first part of a three part series. In this episode cover the Undead Burg, the Undead Parish, Blighttown, the Depths, and the Lower Undead Burg. Note that these are the areas' original names, not the names Grimrukh gave to them for the mod.

I loved this mod, even if the lore and writing is a little off at times. All the surprises are great and play off of the player's knowledge of the base game, notably the Taurus Demon with his plunge attack revenge. Walking into a boss arena without a boss is a fun tense moment. To experienced players, it brings back the good old feelings of adventure, fear, and being lost with limited resources. Finding a relocated bonfire felt almost as relieving as it did on my first play through of DS. This mod seems much longer because you're wandering so far down these various paths without a warp (I was never able to kill the Thrall early). I agree that the enemies are a little too tanky, but it is interesting when previously tough areas are turned into cake walks. One of the best things that happened was when I stole Nito's soul before waking him up, then fell off the cliff outside of his cave. I won't spoil what happens, but I was so thrilled by that entire sequence and its payoff tKikhat I laughed and applauded at my desk.

I’m so happy you guys are covering this mod! Can’t wait for the rest. Just a quick correction. The cells you can open in the asylum are only empty if you don’t take the etched ring as your starting gift. If you take the ring then there are faces in the walls the you can swear oaths too and they all add a different challenge to the game. I can’t remember them all but one I do remember is perma drain on your health, but you also recover health when you kill enemies. Also, if you ever take the etched ring off it kills and curses you.
