Unfilmable 18: Annihilation

This month we talk about 2017's Annihilation, starring Natalie Portman and based off of the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Vandermeer. Portman is part of a team of scientists sent into "The Shimmer", an expanding zone of corrupted nature that arrived with a meteor strike. The team falls one by one as things get stranger and less reliable.

This movie was TERRIFYING the first time I watched it. I expected a sci-fi thriller and was not prepared for how uncomfortable it made me throughout. This is a movie I recommend and then either watch it with them or again by myself because the subtleties you pick up on each rewatch are wonderful. It can be straight forward and clunky in its descriptions at times, I realized that after you guys mentioned it, but the things it doesn’t say and the ways you’re left to interpret the larger themes are my favorite parts. You mention the water a few times showing the blood or not showing blood, but did you also notice the refraction and mirroring that is done with it as well? The way both Kane and Lena are reflected in the glass shows them touching their reflected hands, foreshadowing early on that Kane is not who he seems and later that Lena isn’t either. Great film I now have to rewatch again. Loving the show!

I’m very proud that I was one of like 12 people to see this in theaters. I also love the subdued soundtrack that gets turned up to 10 during rainbow orb scene.
