Unfilmable 19: Dreams in the Witch House

We've reached our final Stuart Gordon Lovecraft adaptation, which is fittingly the final Lovecraft adaptation Gordon had the opportunity to direct. His adaptation of Dreams in the Witch House was featured on the anthology series Masters of Horror, and it stars Ezra Godden, who previously featured in Dagon. Gordon brings the story to the modern day and substantially reduces its scope, eliminating the cosmic elements and leaving us with a modest story about demonic possession.

Long time listener, first time subscriber, I'd be interested in Nicholas' point. I think, ironically, Lovecraft Country isn't very Lovecraftian, but it might be interesting in spite of (or because of) that point!

Don't know if this has been asked and answered before but any plans to talk about Lovecraft Country?

Nicholas Basile

Masters of Horror is inconsistent, but the hour long format really suits the genre so it rarely feels boring. Carpenter's first episode is excellent, as is Miike's (which was never aired for reasons that would be obvious to anyone that has seen any of his work). Cigarette Burns, Imprint, Family (starring Norm from Cheers), and The Screwfly Solution are the best of the lot. While this is kind of turning the premise of the show on it's head, it would be fun to hear you guys cover Alan Moore's Lovecraft cycle. It is among the best (or at least most unique) adaptations of Lovecraft's work, while also providing a novel contrast to the films discussed in the series which generally tried (and mostly succeeded) to faithfully adapt the source material.

Fair enough. Love you guys

I'm happy that panel ended up being useful! It didn't work for us, for the reasons stated, but if it helped you that's great. Thanks for listening! - K

In reference to the talk on Masters of Horror you guys should watch the last episode of season 1 Takashi Miike's Imprint. It is uniquely upsetting my dudes

Oh man. I'm from germany and a stand-up comedian. I totally respect that you think the chris rock/ricky gervais panel is just embarrassing. But I just have to say when I first saw it at the age of maybe 21 it helped me immensely to understand comedy as a craft. A lot of things said in that show are still in the back of my mind today when I try to write bits or perform, even though I'm not really a fan of ricky gervais anymore
