Call and Response: October 2020
Added 2020-10-15 16:00:07 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Sunday, October 18.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

2020-10-22 21:29:38 +0000 UTCHave either of you played or heard mention of Mortal Shell? It is specifically a love letter to Dark Souls and would be a perfect episode for bonfireside chat

2020-10-22 20:12:00 +0000 UTCWere either of you able to try some demos during the events that Steam put on this past summer and fall? I was impressed by the number of games I had never heard of that ended up on my wishlist after trying the demos, primarily Suzerain and Fights in Tight Spaces.

2020-10-18 23:17:07 +0000 UTCDo you two have any affection for the Haunting of Hill House (and now Bly Manor) series? I know you are constantly overloaded with content ideas, but FWIW, it would be interesting to hear your takes if a spot in the schedule ever opens up.

2020-10-18 22:26:45 +0000 UTCWhat makes a good cell phone game? You see a lot of shit get ported to iPhone and Android devices with virtual d-pads and they pretty universally suck the balls from the sack of the sky or however that phrase goes. Then you have wonderful cell phone games like Hidden My Game By Mom, Hitman Go, Alto's Adventure, etc. So what, in you fine gentlemen's opinion, is the secret sauce that makes great phone games great?

2020-10-16 13:12:56 +0000 UTCSo I recently started a new contract job which has me working second shift. It's been a long time since I worked this shift, but I recall getting home late and playing online games like WoW and Battlefield 2 into the wee hours of the morning. There's a different group of people who play games that late, and it got me wondering -- do you like playing certain games at certain times of the day, for example horror games at night? If you play any games online, do you prefer the players you find at certain hours as opposed to others?

2020-10-16 02:49:53 +0000 UTCIn the spirit of Top Gun: Maverick (the upcoming sequel to a dumb, but enjoyable old movie that no one was asking to see more of): What dumb, but enjoyable old game would you least like to see get a modern sequel that no one is asking for?

2020-10-16 00:00:49 +0000 UTCI love the board game Pandemic, but I have a hard time playing it during, ya know, a real life global pandemic. I also find that I can't watch "cringe" comedy that I usually love, ala The Office, etc., nowadays. Do you all have any media that you find you just can't enjoy the same way you used to --even if you really want to--during 2020?

2020-10-15 23:52:33 +0000 UTCSo, like, is Elden Ring real or did we all just have a very specific communal hallucination?

2020-10-15 22:47:13 +0000 UTCFor the spooky month, what kind of spooks do you enjoy and what minds can't you stand? For example, I like super campy over the top stuff like Creepshow, but have a low tolerance for gross body horror so reading the Human Centipede Wiki page ruined my whole week back whennit first came out.

2020-10-15 21:57:10 +0000 UTCLong-Form Discussion: How do you guys feel about achievements and trophies for games? It feels like something we ignore often but practically every game released has a slew of digital stickers for doing tasks of all kinds - and most consoles rank players based on trophies unlocked. Do you guys think achievements hinder or add to a games experience?

2020-10-15 21:30:30 +0000 UTCPersonal topic: The topic of the joy of pet ownership and general love of animals comes up often for you both. I was curious how you each have reconciled these feelings with thoughts of factory farming and the meat industry in general. I recognize that loving pets and eating factory produced meat aren't inherently contradictory acts, though I think all introspective people who do eat meat typically have at some point wrestled with the cognitive dissonance of how animals are treated within modern agricultural norms.... norms that have become increasingly less ethical in recent years given the limited oversight from Trump's appointees in that sector.

2020-10-15 18:26:39 +0000 UTCWhat do you think makes a good game review? Assigning numeric scores seems silly, but I understand the need for simplicity especially when someone is deciding whether or not to buy a game. If you weren’t playing games for work, what kind of reviews or reviewers would you go too?

2020-10-15 18:26:13 +0000 UTCWe'll say on the eppo, but I recommend everyone play KF4.

2020-10-15 18:25:27 +0000 UTCIt seems like the last couple years i’ve seen way more comics being used as source material for tv shows, and it usually seems to work out pretty well. I know it’s a completely different medium but, in a perfect world, which comic series’ or arcs would you like to see adapted into games? What genre would they be? How would they play? I’d love to see a survival horror Hellboy game (that weird one for psx doesn’t count) or a surreal narrative experience set in the Sandman universe.

2020-10-15 18:23:12 +0000 UTCEach Duckfeed podcast crew, past and present, enters a pizza eating contest. Each group of two needs to finish a 30”, 5-topping pizza, within one hour. Assume any podcast with more or less than two people needs to finish a proportionate amount of pizza in the same time limit. Which podcast will triumph? Would you order different toppings to represent WOFF, BC, or The Orb?

2020-10-15 18:17:51 +0000 UTCI suspect this may have been asked and answered in a previous WOFF Dispatch, but since Baldur’s Gate 3 recently came out in Early Access (which for the 20+ hours it took me with one character, I am glad to say I enjoyed it very much) I wonder if either of you have any opinions on D&D 5E - in and of itself and/or adapting it to a video game, what if anything you think should be changed in the adaptation, etc. Thanks!
David
2020-10-15 18:03:14 +0000 UTCWhat is your favorite way games use music that's different from other genres? I personally love dynamic music. Similarly, how do you think the fact that game music has to be endless (loop forever) has changed game music and gaming?

2020-10-15 17:07:42 +0000 UTCNo question here, but I just recently started playing through the Baldur's Gate series. What sold me was Gary mentioning that over the course of the games and expansions you'd have accrued roughly 300 hours of playtime with your character. So far I'm struck by just how good the writing and world building is. I'm currently on chapter 2 of Baldur's Gate 2 and I feel spoiled to know that I have a short story to look forward to whenever I pick up my Nintendo Switch. As a dnd noob it was so hard for me to get over the barriers to entry (bg1 was essentially a 60 hour tutorial for me) but this is truly an amazing series.

2020-10-15 16:39:12 +0000 UTCWhat do you think about the state of games? Are you video game optimists (generally think that lately there’s been a ton of great games and that the medium is getting better) or pessimists (think the great days are behind us.)?While I love retro games I generally consider myself an optimist. Switch and PS4 have been amazing. Maybe it’s more nuanced than that?

2020-10-15 16:39:03 +0000 UTCYou both have a proud history of disliking sexual content in games. You've said you don't want games (and cartoons) to try to make you aroused and have expressed distaste for the Bioware style of romance where filling an affection meter rewards the player with sex. Are there examples of player-driven romance or sexualized content in games you think has worked or at least not been terrible? If that question is too personal, how long until Fallout 4 on WOFF, and would the structure of episodes be similar to 3 and NV, or would it have to change since the format has changed too?

2020-10-15 16:30:35 +0000 UTCMuch like Gary gives the come-hither to your BSC guests, are you (either together or individually) open to some jolly collaboration? Also - ever seen that film, The Platform (2019)?

2020-10-15 16:29:48 +0000 UTCLong Form Discussion: How do you feel about spiritual successors? Where do they fit in for you in terms of following an ongoing or dead series? Games like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Castlevania), Eiyuden Chronicle (Suikoden), and even Undertale (Earthbound) have made this increasingly common over the past five years.

2020-10-15 16:26:28 +0000 UTCQuick Question: What King's Field games do you recommend, if any, to fans of the Dark Souls series?

2020-10-15 16:23:50 +0000 UTCWhat’s your view on DLCs? I know you have consistently covered them on your show but I’d be interested to know how you view them - not from a price point of view but in terms of the game itself. I find my myself extremely uninterested on DLC if I come to a game late where the DLC has already come and gone. Even when I come to a game fresh, I still don’t get that much excitement out of it - two recent examples are Outer Worlds and Doom Eternal, I absolutely love those games, had tons of fun but once I was nearing the end game I couldn’t imagine wanting to essentially “start again”. I guess it comes down to a feeling of completion and putting it to bed, irrespective of how much I loved the game.

2020-10-15 16:07:10 +0000 UTCI’d be really interested if you guys ever got around to reviewing the Outlast games. This time of year I play them back to back. The first one surprisingly sold me within the first 15 minutes.
