Bonfireside Chat 174: Ico

This week we're doing something different, and looking in-depth at the game that inspired Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of Dark Souls, to get into making games. A young boy is exiled for growing horns, and he must escape from a huge abandoned castle while rescuing a strange princess from a surely miserable fate. It's a simple game that has a lot of problems, but its atmosphere and obscurity are master-class, and you can see the direct lines between this and Miyazaki's FromSoft games.

A huge thanks to Simon, who originally sponsored this episode for Watch Out for Fireballs!

Did NOT expect this, but I'm so glad to see this game in the Bonfireside Chat context! 🥰

This sent me back to your Shadow of the Colossus episode, which I really enjoyed. It reminded me that I downloaded the PS4 remaster of it a while ago. I booted it up, wandered around a bunch, saw the first Colossus and just...decided to not go any further. I'm happy with those guys just hanging out on my machine. I've killed them once in a past life. I don't need to do that again. I don't think I've ever not played a game before purely because I prefer the story of that timeline!

That's a good idea! In the meantime, I did guest on a Retronauts about that game. -GB
