Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch December 2020
Added 2020-12-18 00:35:02 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please leave your response as a comment on this post by the end of the day on Monday, December 21.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

2020-12-21 18:56:14 +0000 UTCHi fellas, sorry if this has been asked before, but what's your favorite game to play that you wouldn't recommend for anyone else? Whether it's too janky, obtuse, or some other kind of objectively busted, what's the one game you can't help but love playing despite most people rightfully disliking?

2020-12-21 07:04:20 +0000 UTCHope you're feeling better, Kole. Congrats on 300 episode. Love the content, community, and you guys. Thanks for the Brotherhood of the Wolf discussion. Is Bladerunner 2047 Bloodborne inspired? 4 minutes in looks very Hunter-esque. Forces beyond human conception in play. What do you think? Happy holidays, everyone. Be safe.

2020-12-20 16:00:05 +0000 UTCWhere in the RE series do you think is a good stopping point story wise? I think that the story would have been fine if it ended after RE 3 or code Veronica and have RE 4 be it’s own self contained story and have the plagas virus be destroyed along with the island. I feel like the story has just gone over the deep end and that it would have been fine if they ended it after code Veronica, even tho I enjoy the other games in the series after 4, thank you guys for putting out quality content and congrats on episode 300!

2020-12-20 08:55:56 +0000 UTCHaving Dragon Age 2 and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance this month really put into stark contrast why I never found the world of Thedas to be interesting. Gary managed to sum it up in a single word: "Limited". The Forgotten Realms may be somewhat generic, but it also contains multitudes. This got me thinking about settings, especially in D&D and I gotta know...which is worse: Eberron or Spelljammer?

2020-12-19 23:00:05 +0000 UTCDo you have a favorite monster of the week show? X-Files? Buffy? Doctor Who? Supernatural? Scooby Doo?

2020-12-19 18:28:21 +0000 UTCThis has probably been asked before but: Do you guys have any games/shows you've thought about doing deep-dives for? It's been fun vicariously exploring the Venture Bros through ORB and Bonfireside Chat is a stalwart show. Light-hearted follow up: How can we get more tabletop discussion from you guys (RPG, MTG, board games, etc)?

2020-12-19 18:20:01 +0000 UTCCongrats on 300 episodes! I know it's not the first Duckfeed show to pass that milestone, but it's still really impressive. Most of us will never make 300 of anything non-biological, so I think that's pretty amazing. I'm really enjoying ORB! Left a 5-star review in the Norwegian iTunes store. Just letting you know in case you don't have a system for checking reviews from all the different countries' iTunes stores in one place. There's one thing I haven't heard anyone mention about Venture Bros, that I can't help but notice whenever it comes up in the show. I think that The OSI sounds a lot like The USA when you say it out loud. Do you think the creators are trying to more explicitly link the actions of agencies like the CIA to the country as a whole?

2020-12-19 13:56:11 +0000 UTCWhat's a movie that you've seen since you were a adult (so nothing from your childhood that you might be nostalgic for) that you really like and enjoy despite a lot of people not, and that you will still watch again and again despite recognizing the problems the movie has? For me, my go to examples are Passengers with Jennifer Lawrence and Sucker Punch with Emily Browning. There's just something about those two movies that really appeals to me despite their reputation.

2020-12-19 03:11:45 +0000 UTCHey fellas! Im in the middle of a long playthrough of X4. A massive open space scifi game that has almost no story, complex missions, or character interaction. But it is exactly what I've always wanted from a sci fi game, to the point where I'd almost say it's my most ideal videogame. My question is do any games you've played come to mind when you think of what you're ideal genre/game would be? Have you finally played "that" game that felt like it was made *just* for you? Thanks for all the amazing work you guys do and all the different content you make!!

2020-12-18 23:55:31 +0000 UTCI've been playing through--and really enjoying--Ghost of Tsushima recently, but what drives me nuts is that there's no lock-on in that game. That really turned me off of Horizon Zero Dawn, too, but my love for old samurai movies kept me going through Tsushima. I kinda thought that lock-on in a 3D action game was one of those "settled laws" of gaming ever since Ocarina of Time, but I guess not? Can you think of any other games where "settled" mechanics of the genre got flouted and it still worked for you?

2020-12-18 23:45:42 +0000 UTCHappy Holidays, boys. I write dumb animal poems in the spirit of better writers. Over the weekend I entered a book club for a Democratic primary candidate. I had my poem read and praised on a livestream by some d list celebrities (including the man that gets head penetrated by a robot arm in Terminator 2, sorry to braggg). It was quite the high for the 24 hours before the extremely caucasian host of the event released another stream talking (with much civility) about how BLM is a force for evil. My question is have you ever had your work platformed or endorsed by a platform or person that you later discovered to have problematic views? If so, how have you handled it? PS - What are your favorite animals?

2020-12-18 19:22:48 +0000 UTCWith all the chat of fantasy settings, and what is considered the default style now. I was curious if either of you fans of the stories that influenced Dungeons and Dragons, which codified (for better or worse) what generic fantasy is?

2020-12-18 18:53:13 +0000 UTCHey Guys! AS GAMERS I’m sure we’ve all gotten gifts from non-gamer loved ones trying their best. Do you have any funny stories about somebody getting you a gamer gift that misses the mark?

2020-12-18 15:10:08 +0000 UTCMaybe it’s not fair to ask this question right as CD Projekt Red is putting the torch to years of good will, but it’s been 5 years and I was wondering now that the dust has settled what’s your Game of the year/RPG of the year for 2015 Bloodborne or Witcher 3? (Including DLC for both games)

2020-12-18 13:53:59 +0000 UTCHey Guys! /greggvoice I've been replaying the entire Breath of Fire series this year; being 20-25 year old RPGs they have their ups and downs, but it's upon revisiting the fifth entry, Dragon Quarter on PS2, that I've cracked onto something special. When it was current, I was initially put off by what a departure from the rest of the series it was. With a bit of distance, I've realised its intricate mix of narrative RPG, tactics, survival horror, and roguelike holds up as incredibly fresh and compelling, making it all the more tragic the series promptly died after its release. I wanted to ask if you have any favorite "black sheep" entries in a series; a title that subverted its franchise legacy to interesting ends. Conversely, do you have any least favorite black sheep? Thanks for another excellent year of podcasts and have a wonderful winter holiday. Hope 2021 is better for all of us.

2020-12-18 10:02:36 +0000 UTCHey guys, you may have discussed this before but: cinematic games! What in your opinions are good examples / bad examples of the more cinematic side of gaming? Do you think there is room for more cinematic games in general or do you think it is more of a AAA developer fad?
Matthew Morel
2020-12-18 08:32:51 +0000 UTCYou guys sometimes say “Don’t punish me with repetition” in regards to games making you redo something after failing. I was curious if you have any good examples of games that have alternative ‘punishments’, or if you have any ways you wish developers could get around this issue? I agree with your view on this, but I’m just curious about good solutions. Thanks for all your great content, i look forward to your new episodes every week :)

2020-12-18 07:08:33 +0000 UTCWhat games are great, but aren't necessarily fun? Tangentially, what makes us what to play games that we know aren't going to be fun (or at the very least will add stress to our lives, rather than take it away)?
Markus Blomer
2020-12-18 03:22:04 +0000 UTCTopic idea (but maybe you can answer it in a question): The importance of fun. A few years ago I finished grad school and I have since started engaging with video games more as a hobby and less just something I do for fun or to pass the time. One of the things I have struggled with in that pursuit though is how much I should judge a game based on what it does for the medium vs how much I should judge it entirely based on how fun it is to play today. I think of something like Fortnite vs something the original Dragon Quest. One is a historically important game that is not particularly fun to play today and one is a game designed to be fun but that I see little value in in terms of what it is doing for the medium of video games. Is this something you guys think about when reviewing old games? Do you have any insight into how to meet a game on its own terms and in its own time as opposed to looking at it strictly with a modern lens? Thank you guys so much for the awesome work you do!

2020-12-18 02:49:51 +0000 UTCI have heard you guys talk about Townsends and Sons on YouTube and I have to agree the content is great, but do you guys ever worry he is in the pocket of Big Nutmeg?

2020-12-18 02:18:22 +0000 UTCHey guys! Recently listening through File Under Water for the first time and loving it, even as a pretty casual R.E.M. fan. I know projects like this are more on the niche side (as mentioned on episodes of the show itself) and apologies if this has been answered before... But if you two were to hypothetically create another band or musician deep-dive podcast, who would you pick? P.S. - Ignoreland isn't that bad!

2020-12-18 01:14:53 +0000 UTCHi friends!! Juli here, and this question is for Gary specifically. As a fellow diabetic, would you have any daily lifestyle tips in regards to staying safe from the pandemic? No worries whatsoever if this is too heavy, by the way. I got diagnosed with Type 1 the day before I turned seven -- the best Christmas gift ever *looks at camera like Jim Halpert* -- so I am eagerly awaiting access to a vaccine, and being extra careful in the interim. Ordering DoorDash, sanitizing orders, etc. Any other tips on things that are helping you personally make it through the day? (Y'all's podcasts help so much, by the way! Much love to all in the Duckfeed community. <3 )

2020-12-18 01:12:10 +0000 UTCRecently there have been a few older games that have miraculously received full localizations and come out in the west for the first time. Do you have any dream games that you would like to see receive an official translation?

2020-12-18 00:47:59 +0000 UTCI remember in some podcast one of you mentioned not having much enthusiasm for Age of Calamity, since Muso gameplay necessitates wildly different themes than BotW had. Are there any settings/worlds/IPs you think have handled this sort of genre shift well? What do you think helps or hinders this transition?
Matt Bixler! Hello!
2020-12-18 00:45:06 +0000 UTCHi there! I am curious about your take on the dragon quest series. As I’m playing 11 (again) I would enjoy hearing what you all have to say about it. Thanks😁
