Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch April 2021

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, April 19 by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

If this is not posted too late, can you please discuss Arnold Schwarzenegger's discomforting voyeuristic gaze during Jamie Lee Curtis' striptease scene in the film True Lies?

How do you feel about chase sequences in horror games? Is it something still exciting, like it was back with Amnesia, or is it starting to get played out with everyone adding them in, like with newer Resident Evil and even a walking simulator like Layers of Fear 2?

Christopher Schlee

I've been on a bit of an old movie kick lately. What's your favorite movie from each decade? Or just one you really like.

SindrElf

Out of all Jim Henson related media, from Sesame Street to The Dark Crystal, which are your favorite Muppets?

SindrElf

Do you guys think remasters, remakes and reimaginings are a good substitute for videogame preservation? I want everyone to have access to old games in their original format, but retro games become less accessible as time goes on. Is it that important to play Abe's Odyssey with scanlines and gaussian blur, or should we all just play the remaster? I've been watching a lot of Baumgartner Restorations on YouTube, and it makes me think.

Hi guys, it has been an absolute joy to work my way through Fallout 1 and halfway through 2 in the last few weeks which your old podcasts finally convinced me to do. Fallout 1, in particular, has become one of my most memorable gaming experiences. It has left me incredibly thirsty for more Fallout content - is there any planned on the docket at the moment? Thanks for all of your hard work during the pandemic! Exploring the new podcasts, and revisiting the evergreen back-catalogue, has been a persistent balm.

Whelp, thanks for the local food suggestions, the lilting Mrs Fisher's potato chip monster is my new favorite thing. Is his hat a tiny box? I've used your suggestions as reasons to travel (after PRGE I've gone ghost golfing, and you were both correct that haunted houses are the best). Got any local suggestions for things to do? Kole, what's in the greater Ohio area?

Eric Jedraszczak

HI guys. i wanted to thank you for being a commendable shining beacon of human decency in the gaming community; something that i thought to be scarce in the video game discourse. Thank you for that. As for the question there is a thing that has been bugging me for a while. What is an RPG video game nowadays? If you ever look up any online "best of at this very specific moment" list of RPG titles vary from your Witchers and Baldur's Gates, through Dark Souls and Zeldas to Bioshocks and Far Cries. What do you understand and treat as an RPG. Do you think that this moniker still has a place in modern video game landscape?

Mateusz Swietoslawski

I guess this is specifically for Gary, thought obviously I'd love to hear from Kole as well on this, but you've mentioned in the past how you probably have a long form essay in you about depictions of food in games. Just curious if that ever happened and I missed it. Would love to hear you talk at length about that, as I also think it's one of the more subtly fascinating decisions someone can make when creating a game.

Chris Meixner-Croft

What is the best/funniest/bleakest example of environmental storytelling you've encountered in real life?

Chris Meixner-Croft

What would you consider a more grievous assault against you: A) Someone writing a globally successful fiction series (think Harry Potter level) in which they name the most heinous, universally hated character after you. B) Someone creating (paying for the production of and resultant ecological blowback) an NFT of a screenshot of every social media post you make on any platform, business or recreational, for the rest of your life.

Do you think the Switch is getting a little too long in the tooth? I love that system, but more and more it seems like there have been performance (or porting) issues that really hamper the experience for some games. I got burned on the Switch version of Bloodstained and ended up buying it again on PC. Even first-party games like Link's Awakening suffer from some laggy game play and FPS issues. Do you think we've hit the point of diminishing returns for my favorite couch/bed system by now?

Mark Mahler

Did either of you get a chance to play the RE: Village Demo during that 24 hour window? Thoughts?

Mark Mahler

Recently a sequel was announced to 34-year-old Famicom-exclusive Getsu Fūma Den, and there also it an upcoming TMNT game that is based on the 80's cartoon series and explicitly a spiritual successor to Turtles In Time. Are there are any games from 25+ years ago that you would want to see revisited and enhanced for modern sensibilities? My own answer would be something that looked to the Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma trilogy.

Ryan

I recently listened to the Mega man X revisit episode. An excellent episode. You mentioned doing a couple of other revisits, specifically Bloodlines and Super Mario World. Have you two thought more about this? It makes sense not to redo them with so many games out there, and the boom of patron demands. Just curious to hear a little inside scoop on this.

Jared

Either of yall interested in playing the new Disco Elysium Final Cut edition? There's been massive changes to the voice over.

Randall

Hey guys! Quick question. Did you know that Will Hughes got 780 verbal, 730 math on his SATs?

Adam Bucceri

What is a month theme you've always wanted to do but haven't been able to?

Markus Blomer

You guys don’t need to read this first part on air if you don’t want to. Also, I hope it comes across as a compliment! I’m finally listening to the original Demon Souls season on BFC after beating the remake. Listening to these very old episodes (nearly a decade ago) made me realize how much you guys have improved in your podcasting abilities. Not that you were bad back then, far from it, but I noticed that the jokes, rapport, and analysis have all greatly improved. So good job honing your craft over these years! Can’t wait to listen to many more. Secondly please analyze this recurring dream I’ve been having for years. Generally, I find out that my apartment building has a brand new, (or secret that I didn’t know about), endless restaurant hall/ food court in it with everything I could possibly want. Where once was a lobby and parking garage is now miles of pizza, noodles, chicken wings, and ice cream sundaes. In my dreams I don’t think I ever eat the food I think I just get overwhelmed by choice. Like walking around Disney World trying to figure out which ride to go on first. These are generally the happiest dreams I have weirdly enough, the rest are all about missing flights and not studying for tests. Is there some deeper meaning here, or am I just a hungry boy? Quick little lightning round bonus question: what are you choosing in the endless food court from heaven? Thanks!

Matt DiTomaso

Have you all thought about doing a Metroidvania month?

Chris Gartner

There's a pinned post on the main page of the Patreon campaign that tells you exactly how. Should be pretty breezy from there.

Frank Horrigan

As someone who thinks of video games as a hobby as opposed to just something I do to pass the time, I often think about my gaming “diet” and try and make sure it is balanced and interesting. I make a point to add variety to the games I’m playing and try and play a good balance of games, not just stuff I love but also stuff that does different, important, or interesting stuff with the medium. Seeing how you two play them for a living, what advice would you have for people that want to continue to expand their understanding and critical eye towards the video games?

Collin Strong

How can I join the slack? I hear you guys talk about it on episodes and I figured it was a message board/ group chat type thing and I would love to join!

Joseph maneol

Do you have any go-to appearance choices in games with a character creator?

Ben Sapatka

Here's a bit of a softball, but what cheesy or "bad" movies do you guys unironically love? Big Trouble In Little China is my all-time favorite movie because it feels like a warm blanket and I can literally watch it anytime I want to feel better. It's cheesy, the characters are charming, and no one, even the villains, take themselves overly seriously. Do either of you have a go to comfort movie?

Joshua Kane

Are there any moments in games you've played that feel Significant in some way, but you can't quite articulate why?

Andrew C

I was very interested to hear what you guys had to say about Buffy the Vampire Slayer when you recently covered the GC game in a recent podcast. With all due respect, I have to disagree that someone who didn't watch the show then can't enjoy it now. I also missed the show during it's original run, and ended up binging it on a streaming service about five years, and I really enjoyed it and thought it held up very well. However, I can't the same for a lot of 70's and 80's TV shows I watched growing up. Are there any TV shows you did not watch when it first came out but you've since watched and really enjoyed, and conversely, any that you've tried to go back to and found them very hard to stomach in 2021?

Greg Polander

Two variations of the same question; feel free to answer one or both if you want. 1. If you could have a tycoon/simulator/mama game based on any job or trade, what job or trade would you want to play as? 2. If someone made a Podcasting tycoon/simulator/mama game, what are some game mechanics you would like to see?

Inter-Party Conflict

As AAA games become more and more disastrous as time goes on, I often see a games downfall being relegated to feature bloat. Games with perfectly good primary and secondary mechanics are constantly inflated to give players the most bang for their buck with dozens of vestigial mini games and side-side quests. Do you feel that this is becoming a defining death knell of modern gaming, or has it existed since the beginning and like most things, remain dependent on the design team of games?
