Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch March 2021

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, March 15 by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Have you guys ever considered that if you two fused into a super here you would be GaryKole-Man?

Gabriel Tindall

Or, even better, a Bonfireside Chat boardgame: what does that look like? Eg. Gary gets +1 defense in response to Kole correcting a pronunciation.

Lewis Shaw

Not sure if it’s meaty enough for a topic, but I’m wondering what your opinions are on timed exclusives? I honestly didn’t even know they were a thing until I found out I wouldn’t be able to buy Hitman 3 on steam until 2022 since epic payed for the exclusive rights for the first year.

Cale Barber

Are you guys into Warhammer Fantasy at all? My only exposure to the franchise has been through the Total War Warhammer games, but I love how the entire universe is full of rule-of-cool nonsense. You guys both always seem to really enjoy cool ideas and concepts, especially in a fantasy setting, and Warhammer is essentially a blank check for the most outrageous, over-the-top insanity you can think of, and requires basically no explanation or in universe justification. Giant walking pirate ship with a cannon arm? Hell yeah. You want rats with machine guns purely because "gatling" kinda sounds like "ratling?" We'll work it in. How do the helicopters flown by Dwarfs work? I dunno, shut up. I'm sure there's lore justification for everything, but, like... who gives a shit? It's rad!

Chapel Collins

What are some of your favorite card based video games? Slay the Spire is pretty recent, and the Pokemon TCG on the Gameboy was a game I really enjoyed when I was younger.

Nick

What games feel like a warm hug to you? Stardew Valley is mine.

Markus Blomer

I contribute and work as an editor at my university's cultural criticism journal, and a sizable portion of what we consider when selecting papers for publication is both the technical literacy of our non-academic audience as well as the niche interests some authors write on that may alienate an unengaged readership with due to reader unfamiliarity (doubly difficult when selecting for a bilingual student body). As critics yourselves, how do you balance the tightrope between what you feel you can reasonably cover and in what scholastic degree, as far as utilizing critical terminology with or without citation and further expounding, without fear of losing some listeners to incomprehension or misunderstanding?

Béa(u)

What is your guys' plan if one of you suddenly and unfortunately dies? Continue the show and just call it Watch Out for A Fireball?

Gabriel Tindall

Who are some videogame characters you have been really invested in? Like, you wanted them to be happy at the end of things/better off than they started in a way that motivated you?

William

As someone with zero D&D experience, which would you recommend: Baldur’s Gate 1, BG 2, Planescape Torment, or Icewind Dale?

Ian Derk

Having recently started playing La-Mulana and replaying Myst, puzzles have been on my mind. What are some of your top puzzley games, regardless of being point and click, platformers, horror, etc.?

Christopher Schlee

Besides stuff you are covering for shows, what media have you been enjoying lately?

SindrElf

Maybe you covered this before? Do either of you guys have book/movie/game/album, etc., that you absolutely love, but would struggle to explain why to other people (and are secretly convinced that friends/significant others would seriously judge you for if you tried to explain it)? Mine's "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" and/or "Ice Pirates." What can I say? I've got a type ;)

Mark Mahler

ORB question: I kinda hate Sgt. Hatred, but I feel like most other fans really like him. What's the appeal?

Mark Mahler

Kinda disappointed that I don’t have anything to really ask, so I’ll just say hey to both of you and let you guys know that I enjoy your show and listen to your episodes all day almost every day ( and yes that means I re listen to episodes) thanks for all you do and the hard work!

Joseph maneol

We all have our 'comfort' things -- food, music, TV shows and movies. What are some of your comfort games? For me, I enjoy going back to some of my favorite NES games like Mega Man, Contra, and Super Mario. Also Stardew Valley and My Time At Portia are very 'relaxing' games to play.

Greg Polander

As a child, I would often go to the local bookstore with my mom. She was an avid reader and once in a while she’d let me pick out one book of my choice. I was probably 12 or 13 at the time that I came across the Shadowrun third edition sourcebook. I was fascinated by its interesting characters, gritty tone, and dark setting. For me this book was influential in shaping a lot of my taste in media and ultimately growing into a huge fan of the Shadowrun video games. Is their any piece of media that you came across as a youth that has been influential or stuck with you? Also - have you played Battletech by HBS? I think you guys would really dig it. Thanks for the hours of great shows and discussions.

Ralph

I enjoy the Assassin's Creed games mostly as virtual tourism. I got a good laugh at AC: Valhallas portrayal of my hometown of Bergen, Norway as a polar-bear infested land of eternal winter, but they still kind of captured the "feeling" of what it would look like more than a century ago. Are there any games you think nails their depiction of a real place, or completely bungles it? My favourite is the faithful reenactment of Kabukicho in the Yakuza games, that had me feeling like I was playing the games when I went there myself.

Geir

In a bizarre Brewster's Millions situation, Kole is given a blank check by an eccentric billionaire under one condition -- he must use it to make a free to play mobile gacha game or MMO that Gary would willingly play. What does the project proposal for this hypothetical game look like? (Note: you are allowed to tie in other IP)

mosesplan

There's a lot of hubbub going around about Elden Ring, what with the leaked trailer recently. What are you looking forward to the most about it? If you could pick one flaw from previous mainline Soulsborne titles in the past, what would you fix?

Adelaide Lohkamp

Thanks to Orb, I've been on the look out for Razzles (it's like two gifts!). Spoiler alert: I can't find them anywhere. Got a bead on where they could be found? And with that in mind, got any local regional novelty (food or otherwise) that you'd recommend?

Eric Jedraszczak

Let's say you have an unlimited budget for a game project. What would you focus on? Any ideas you haven't seen explored in games that you'd want to realize? One thing I can think is a game that starts out as a completely normal action game that progressively gets weirder and more surreal, maybe with stuff just showing up in the background while the rest of the game doesn't acknowledge it.

Luddekudde

You've talked before about "recommendation poison." What's one TV show/other media that people can't shut up about that you will never ever watch, on principle?

Andrew T

Bloodborne’s board game adaptatIon is out and it’s surprisingly good. Any chance of a Bonfireside Chat/Adaptation Decay crossover for Bloodborne or Dark Souls board games?

Kevin Fitzgerald

Orb Question: If you had to perpetually raise a teenage Hank or Dean, which would you choose?

Jordan and Maya M.

Is there a never made sequel or cancelled project you think about every now and then and wish it had actually come out?

Julia

I've recently been playing Dragon Quest 11 because it's basically like getting into a warm bath. I've found that when I come across an area with enemies that give loads of XP - like the Metal Slimes -, I turn the battle settings to auto and run round in circles while the game basically plays itself until I've had my fill of grinding. As I was doing this, I realised that if there was an option to just increase my levels by a given amount, or an instant "have ten thousand XP" button, I wouldn't use it. Even though it's basically the same thing, the time invested running round in circles to trigger combat makes it feel like the XP is still 'earned' rather than the game just handing things to me. With this in mind, it got me thinking: Have you come across any quality-of-life settings/"I respect your time" sliders that worked particularly well with the type of game they were in, or any that totally defanged their game and reduced it to an overblown powerpoint presentation?

Guy Kelly

Have you given a thought to doing more episodes on shorter games? I think there are some good bite-sized eppos out there that might be fun to hear?

Lucy

Between the ongoing pandemic and getting ready for college classes, I’ve been cooking a lot of comfort food like risotto. Have you guys found yourselves cooking more since the start of it all? Any favorite dishes you like to make?

zindios

What makes a good tutorial? This can also include “intro” levels easing you into the game. What games do you think are best in class? What types do you despise? Do we even need WASD tutorials anymore? Discuss!

Andrew F

What are some of your favourite examples of ludonarrative consonance / harmony?

Trevor Burn
