Unfilmable 27: The Ritual

Four recently-bereaved friends take a hike in the Swedish woods, and find themselves ensnared in an ancient monster's trap. While it's pretty standard folk horror, this movie brings us good performances and extremely evocative imagery, making it one that we'd recommend you check out.

Just listened to this episode and I totally agree that this is a good movie! Has one of you checked out the novel in the meantime? Or just read the synopsis on wikipedia. As Barac Wiley pointed out the final act in the book takes a crazy turn and I also liked it a lot. I'd like to know what you think of that.

I guess maybe I should give this one another go. Having read the book, it's not a very faithful adaptation and I felt like everything they changed made it less interesting...but I also didn't stick around long enough to actually see the creature. But yeah, there's no robbery-turned-homicide in the novel. They're former friends that have largely drifted apart but are trying to rekindle the relationship by doing this trip together (IIRC), and they really actually don't much like each other anymore, which I suspect is why it feels like they don't in the movie. It's also...not standard folk horror. I shouldn't spoil how it's not, but let's just say there's no village full of cultists. I suspect where it *does* go is pretty polarizing but for me it was a much more memorable choice.

Unless I misunderstand the Wikipedia entry two of the lads are married (lad marriage) in the book... Also there is no guilt backstory in the book which feels weird cuz that was one of the parts of the movie I liked the best. It's possible it's just a poorly written Wikipedia page but 🤷🏻‍♀️
