Watch Out for Fireballs! 327: Chrono Trigger (Premium)

It's about time!

This week, we set our wayback machines to 1995 to discuss one of the most beloved games of all time. Chrono Trigger was part of a late salvo of 16-bit RPGs that defined a generation of storytelling for people who grew up with it. We have problems with the shallowness of its systems, but its charisma can't be denied.

There were two SNES games that defined my childhood. This and Super Metroid. It’s an extremely validating feeling seeing them recognized as two of the greatest video games of all time.

Give me amount of aggressive and blatant transphobic stuff inherent to berto I really do not like the "birdo as trans" reading

Dani Doyle

Actually read the comment and realized that was essentially what you were saying. Sorry.

Thomas Semmens

Not sure if necroing a comment is gauche but just figured I'd mention that Birdo from Mario Bros 2 is trans. They shoots eggs out of their mouth as a weird way to cope with womb envy. Not sure what pronouns they use, don't think that was a thing back then. I kid you not though.

This is about the only JRPG I’ve ever enjoyed. The DS version is excellent fun and I love how the game isn’t afraid to change up play-styles every so often.

Julian Callan

Can't believe Gary said Flea is the only trans character in video games :p

Dani Doyle

The Steam version of the game plays great now. We just covered the game on my podcast as well (not planned!) and I played it on Steam.

Greg Polander

I played this for the first time a few years ago and really enjoyed hearing how your impressions on a revisit compared to mine as a first timer.

Joelle

me too! there was nothing better than having Gary tear down my childhood darlings and slowly come around to his POV kicking and screaming

I first got into this podcast listening to the retro final fantasy reviews so it’s fantastic to hear you go back to that well again. Thank you for getting me through half my work day!

Sherman McGrew Jr

Played this game for the first time last year during the lockdown. Great time to hear a review!

Chris Hodgson

Just want to say, I'm happy to see y'all cover a retro game again. I absolutely love the deep dives you do into old games' development in the generalities.

Juliet St. Moon

I've been following y'all almost from the start and never expected to see this game reviewed! Great episode

Johnathan Vassar

It's not available on Switch. The iPhone version works fine, especially if you have a controller dock for it. In the episode we conclude that the ideal is to PC emulate the DS or SNES version so you can fast-forward to speed up battles. Avoid the PS5 and any PSN version like the plague... It's the extremely bad PS1 port that has lengthy loading times for opening menus and battle transitions. - K

Really want to play along with this episode. Never gave this game a fair enough shake. Wondering what yours guys' opinions are for the best platform to play a game like this on? I am thinking switch or iphone, but would be down for playing it on PS5 or something if you felt that gave a more classic console experience.
