Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch August 2021

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, August 16 by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Feel free to ignore if this is too personal, but do you ever feel the need to take a break from horrific or intense games for your mental health? I ask because I have severe anxiety, and while I have become pretty numb to horror in movies or fiction, anything tense or scary in games really wigs me out (I think it's due to controlling and being responsible for the protagonist). I've had to take a break from certain games I love recently because it's affecting my mental health too much, e.g. survival horror games and Souls games. Do you ever need a break from more intense games, and do you feel a difference between how horror/anxiety affects you in games vs. other media?

Alex Honeydew

Hey y'all, I promise I'm not just trying to Trojan horse a compliment into the Dispatch, but hear me out. During a recent mental health struggle, I started to establish a small group of media I call my "unconditionals": stuff that I enjoy even in those depressed pits where I feel like I don't enjoy any of the stuff that usually makes me tick. Duckfeed podcasts were actually the inaugural entry into that category. There's the compliment, hope you fuckin' hated it! It has since expanded to include the GBA Castlevanias, WarioWare, What We Do in the Shadows, and I Think You Should Leave. My question is: what are your "unconditionals", if any?

I Have No Hole, and I Must Butt

Life question: This strikes me as something that might have been asked before, but do you have any songs (made-up or otherwise) you sing to your cat(s) while milling about? I have a rottweiler named Lemon and I can't stop singing the following to her (to the tune of Macho Man if you speed through the syllables): ~Lemon berry and Jam~ ~I like to eat ham and I like to eat lamb~ I realize this is silly, but I don't think I'm alone in loving when you guys talk about your little furry friends (and as someone with a bunch of pets, I would guess you guys probably love talking about them too).

What was the first pirated game you remember playing? I distinctly remember my dad bringing home 3.5" floppies from work with Sid Meier's Civilization on them that turned us into lifelong Civilization fans.

Daniel Mesa

Long before I actually became a sports fan I loved playing sports video games. Even today I enjoy playing games for sports I don't much care for like racing or football. Are there any sports games that you like even though you both aren't that into sports or was this just an indicator that I'd get more into sports as an adult and not a thing for non-sports fans?

Daniel Mesa

2 separate questions: 1. What makes a good crafting system? Lots of games have them tacked on, because it’s expected, but have any games really done it well, where it was strictly additive? 2. What makes a good boss fight? Love to hear some examples across genre (especially FPS’s, seems hard to have an interesting boss fight in that genre).

Scott Jarvis

How did the distinctive delivery of the phrase “to me” ( as in “that mechanic was good *to me*) come about? It sounds like a defensive phrase meant to keep people from tweeting contrary opinions at you about everything, but the delivery is notably weird. Is it an inside joke? Wiccan spell? Regional variation? Very specific speech impediment?

Ruky Saavedra

Media question: Hey guys! Like a lot of people, I've found it difficult to sit and read physical or digital books over the last year or so, and more and more have been getting into audiobooks. A shout out to Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, which are consistently brilliantly narrated. Do you have any favourite audiobooks you'd recommend?

James Lewis

I would like to see a long-form call-and-response episode about save games and all their surrounding implementations and implications. Memory cards that used to be $3 USD/kilobyte or integrated into a cartridge. The dreaded no-touch floppy disk of a sibling or friend's adventure save game files. Checkpoints vs. quickloading. "Mule" savefiles. Save-scumming in roguelikes. Cloud / Steam saves and the utility of backups.

picklefactory

I’m curious about any instruments or music gear you guys use, and how you like them. (Instruments, brands, models, effects, anything like that)

Jorge Miguel Reza

Season 4, episode 1 of The Simpsons. Bart and Lisa convince Homer and Marge to send them to Kamp Kristy for the summer. One of the selling point in the advertisement is that the campers get the spend the whole summer with Krusty the Clown. After arrival it's announced by the camp manager (Mr. Black) that Krusty isnt there as he's been held up by some important business but he will show up.. eventually. Despite the camp being a total shit show and an obvious scam, Bart is convinced that it will all be worth it Krusty is coming. He turns it into a mantra to keep up the belief despite all of the evidence that it's a lie. Krusty is coming. Krusty is coming. Krusty is coming.

Hypothetical question: How do you think the network would be affected if you guys got married to each other?

Holland Hume

Hey guys! Over quarantine, I've become fascinated by the Postal series, being exposed to the franchise entirely through the videos of extremely good YouTuber Civvie 11. While I completely understand why most sane and rational people would be actively repulsed by a franchise like Postal, I can't help but find some sort entertainment value in these games. Ultimately, my question to you guys is this: do you guys enjoy any pieces of media that are morally reprehensible at times, but have some core good idea(s)?

Cassandra Banner

What (if any) big changes have you planned to make to the network and/or its shows, but ended up abandoning? How far do those ideas get before removing them?

Autumn M

What is the "games club"? I've been listening for years and I don't think I ever noticed the origin of the introduction "a games club podcast". Am I in the games club? If not how do I join?

Andrew Hunley

I've relistened to a number of old WOFFs recently, and have heard the phrase "waiting for Krusty to come" a whole lot. What the hell does this mean? I know it's a Simpsons reference, but my 45 seconds of googling has been fruitless.

Juliet St. Moon

I know you guys like to game just for fun (as you should) and are not the competitive types, but what games would you say you are particularly good at?

Gabriel Tindall

What's your favorite game music and what gameplay element does it support? For me the opening theme of Ace Combat 6: Fires of liberation always gets me pumped. And the melancholy chords of The Last of Us games just make me want to sob. Thanks.

Shane W

If you could have any video games character guest cohost one of your shows, which character would it be and which show?

Tom Healey

How do you feel about Frasier? And then, what are your favorite sitcoms?

SindrElf

Is there any game that seems to be Taylor made for you but for some reason you just can't get into?

Dani Doyle

Do you have any games or types of games that you're interested in but have no real energy to engage with? I'd love to play a pen and paper rpg with people but the reality of life is such that I have neither the time or know the people irl to do something like that.

Nicholas Basile

Which game, if it was ever WOFF-ed, do you think would cause the most controversy and furor in response? Or do you think it's one you've already covered?

Andrew T

Hey guys, story time, So I have a sleep mask that has built in Bluetooth headphones and most nights I fall asleep listening to random WOFF episodes and on this fateful night I fell asleep listening to the silent hill 3 episode ( great episode btw) and I awoke in the middle of the night with the sound of a loud phone ringing in my ears (my headphones were on full blast) and some dude with a creepy voice singing happy birthday over the phone. It took me a good minute to realize that I was listening to your podcast and when I tell you I about pissed myself bc I literally thought some random dude got my phone number and decided to call me and sing happy birthday to me (my birthday is the 16th this month) at 2 or 3 o’clock, then I heard Gary and Kole’s angelic voices and realized I listening to a podcast. All that being said, congratulations on spooking me, love the show, and thanks for all the hard work you guys do to get these episodes out.

Joseph maneol

Something interesting to me in terms of game history is how we will collectively consider games which changed throughout their lifespan. Games have metashifts and balance patches, even full graphical/gameplay overhauls. With things like WoW Classic seeming to be the exception to the rule, this could radically change the way people revisit many games from their youth in the coming years. Do you think this will be a reckoning to come or is it more likely that whatever early versions of games cease to exist will just be another casualty of an industry that more often than not, is disinterested in its history?

Baxter Chambers

Is there anything either you really wanted to say about a game you covered but forgot? Say, something that you either forgot to include, or a thought you had several weeks later.

Andrew C

What's your favorite useless novelty controller?

Alex Shaw

Meowthusian Theory

Ethan Ryan

Two years ago, between the two of you there was only one cat. A year after that, Kole got a cat. In the past year, two more cats have appeared. In two more years you'll each have eight cats! How will you manage this unstoppable doubling of cats? What is your cat caring capacity? How many cats could you feasibly care for with your combined efforts?

Ethan Ryan

Alright so I’m on a dumb question kick, can we get a numbered ranking on these motherfuckers. 1. Dracula 2. Frankenstein (‘s monster) 3. The Invisible Man 4. The Wolfman 5. The Creature from the Black Lagoon 6. The Mummy. Thanks for all the shows, I moved and now y’all my only friends I can “talk” about games and media with

Jordan and Maya M.

It can be very hard to get someone to play an older game, especially if they are younger and grew up without being exposed to younger generations of gaming systems and games. There's numerous older games of mine from the 80's and 90's I adore and grew up with, and think still hold up today, but trying to get my friends to play them is like pulling teeth. One good example of this would be Ur-Quan Masters, the 'modern' version of Star Control 2. What's a old game you guys love but can be just about impossible to get anyone else to play, and how have you been able to turn them onto the game...if at all?

Greg Polander

Any chance y'all would consider a tier reward to pick media for "Unfilmable"? And/Or perhaps bump that up to 2x per month? It is consistently excellent content and I would love to hear more!

Andy Ward

Can we get an episode of Abject Suffering hosted by Greta and Pocket? I think they might have interesting things to say about the games you play.

Kelerak

In your opinion what are the best foods for sloppin' up? And conversely which foods should never be slopped?

Paul Duffus

Another humble request for a big ol conversation on level design! One day it will happen! :)

Travis Low

I’ve enjoyed the individual “patron-only” feeds for shows like Abject Suffering. Do you have plans to continue that practice for the rest of the shows on the network?

Matt

Do either of you have any opinions about the Jazz Jackrabbit series by Epic? This IP was to me what Sonic was to Kole, and now in my thirties I see that it has a fair share of issues, but the OST stands the test of time for me.

Nick Merillat

I can't remember y'all talking about music much lately. Do you have any favorite albums of the past year or so? If not, what have you been listening to in general recently?

Joelle

If you guys woke up tomorrow as swole-ass hunks, what would you do? Is there any part of the hunk lifestyle that you wish you could participate in? Would you be a smart hunk? Would you let loose and be a dumb hunk? (Himbos are in right now!) Thanks for all the shows!

Brian Levy

You guys are so good at podcasting it blows my mind. I have you in my ears every day. Thank you for the constant flow of content! Suggestions for a dispatch episode: demo discs, video games journalism/review sites, and video game magazines. Thank you!

Nicholas

How did you guys meet?
