Unfilmable 32: Hereditary

There's something wrong with the Graham family, and we really recommend watching the movie first to learn what that something is before you listen to this recap of the film. Hereditary is one of the scariest movies we've seen, and talking through this family drama that takes several wild turns before going completely nuts has only caused us to appreciate it more. This movie gets an unreserved recommendation, just be ready for some big swings.

Please do the movie Antichrist!

Ha, references to Godspeed You Black Emperor and Harry Enfield. Probably the best episode you've ever done. X

Lewis Shaw

my favorite thing ari aster does is that he *hides* incredibly scary details in his movies that make them successively more scary each time i watch them. which is to say i TOTALLY didn’t notice Teen Cultist until you guys mentioned him holy SHIT

sleepysmiles

Awww, damn.

Joan is at the first support group actually!

Unfortunately, the poor dogo does not survive. At the end when Paimon Peter stands up and makes the first tongue click and walks off camera the shot lingers and you can see that poor pupper lying motionless in the background

extremely excited to finish listening. i’m actually pretty much the opposite of gary (with exceptions of course), and i never used to be into horror, but one day i came to understand just how closely linked to the ‘true’ spirit of surrealism it is. the placement of familiar elements next to other familiar elements, with a dash (or in my case, a bucket of) unknown intent: visual drugs. this movie is great and thanks for the episode. oh also, it too stayed with me for an absurdly long time and could not stop thinking about the end for like, days. even understood, it stays with you. crazy.

Eric

Great episode and podcast. Definitely one of my favorite horror movies. Gotta say though. Never expected Car Seat Headrest to be referenced. Love it

I saw this in theaters and because of the way the film was shown I actually didn’t see Annie at all behind Peter in his bedroom and got super spooked by it when I watched again with a friend on streaming.

Stephen Veilleux

I definitely need to rewatch this. There are a couple of things you pointed out I didn't notice, like one of Peter's dipshit friends being in the cult. And I didn't realise that the point of satony and zazas being written on the wall was a failed attempt to get someone to read the words aloud. Jesus Christ, Lord in Heaven, I love this film.

Gary Marshall

Yeah I even think there's a bit right before the light goes inside of Peter where you can see something leave him as well, I took that as Peter's soul leaving his body.

Justin Schmidt

Naw. The light of Paimon settles on him.

Any possibility that Peter is still himself at the end? That's how I read it when I first watched it last year, but maybe I would feel differently on a rewatch.

Andrew (andyk250) Koch

A thing I noticed on my last rewatch is that when the paint gets spilled Annie doesn't actually touch it.

Gary Marshall

For those interested in The Strange Thing about the Johnsons but don't want to necessarily engage with that, Scaredy Cats, the more casual horror movie YT Channel of Thought Slime has a good video about it. https://youtu.be/mF3wqi1k0dE

Mungo Gary is only interested in Mungo Jerry.

Andrew (andyk250) Koch

Would love to see Lake Mungo get this treatment.

Hail, Paimon! 👑 📯🐪

Literally been checking for this daily. One of my favorite movies, and I'm excited to hear you guys talk about it because I've heard you both tout it as great a lot as well.

Justin Schmidt

YES! I've been waiting for this all month, thanks guys!!
