Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch November 2021
Added 2021-11-12 20:29:29 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, November 15 by leaving a comment on this post.
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

That's super cool to hear! And yes I think British seasides are great for horror - there's something about them that's uncanny (maybe the fact that they often seem incongruous with the crappy weather!).

2021-11-22 15:57:17 +0000 UTCHey, just wanted to let you know on the strength of your shout out on the podcast, I immediately bought Saint Maud and watched it with my day off. Superb film, seems to channel a bit from one of my favourites - Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?. Also since visiting there as a kid, I've always thought Scarborough should be a backdrop for more horror, it lends itself to the oppressiveness in this movie. So yeah, thank you very much!

2021-11-22 15:53:48 +0000 UTCMEDIA: Hi guys - in the spirit of Kole being interested in where we're writing from: James here from leafy West London. With spooky season behind us, what was your favourite horror media of the month? I'd like to give a shout-out to 'Saint Maud' - a great 80 minute British horror film from 2019, about a live-in nurse whose pious Christian devotion, borne of a former life of past trauma, causes her to believe that she alone will be the salvation of the dying woman she's caring for - with horrific results. It's extremely creepy, thoughtful horror and I think perfect for Unfilmable.

2021-11-15 16:54:29 +0000 UTCAfter playing Metroid Dread, I've been thinking a lot about map systems in games. I've come to the realization that I like a "less is more" approach, like the original Zelda pack in map, and the in universe Deus Ex maps. Do you guys have a favorite map system? Also, if you like maps, check out the game Miasmata, or watch Jeremy Parish's Cart-ography streams.

2021-11-15 16:23:01 +0000 UTCI've never played a Max Payne game, so I was halfway through your Max Payne episode on Abject Suffering before I realized that I had been thinking of the 1995 movie Major Payne starring Damon Wayans. This is not the first time this has happened. Is there anything like that for you, where your brain just refuses to process a concept and instead shunts you into the closest thing you already know?

2021-11-14 14:24:40 +0000 UTCHow's Kris doing? Been missing my "Those Fucking Ross Boys" episodes something awful.

2021-11-14 04:39:13 +0000 UTCGary and Kole are banished to a deserted island together. Each get to choose 4 games (on any platform), to take with them. What do they choose and why? This question is inspired by the Final Games podcast.

2021-11-13 20:30:16 +0000 UTCDid either of you have a background in criticism or broadcasting before the podcast? I feel like I remember one or both of you mentioning some media study in college, but were you two pursuing some kind of talking-bout-media job before podcasting was a thing?
Matt Bixler! Hello!
2021-11-13 14:25:04 +0000 UTCFinally getting around to Disco Elysium, and it's definitely a detective game (among many other great things) in the way Paradise Killer isn't. What are some non-Paradise Killer games you were either disappointed or excited to find out were far different from how they were presented?

2021-11-13 02:38:26 +0000 UTCAfter liking and finishing Metroid Dread, I found I felt that Metroidvanias as a whole have been done better in the indie space. I've also been keeping track of new Immersive Sims from indie developers, and I'm hoping that we see a boom with them like we have with Metroidvanias. Are there any genres you prefer seeing handled by indie teams rather than by AAA studios?

2021-11-13 00:54:30 +0000 UTCThis question is inspired by Grime. If you could replace your head with anything else, what would you replace it with? Assume that - while you can enjoy some/all of the benefits your potential new head would provide - it would have no significant impact on your diet, sleep schedule, or social life.

2021-11-12 23:24:18 +0000 UTCI meant to ask this last week: If I was going to explore David Bowie's music, where would Gary Suggest I start?

2021-11-12 22:07:43 +0000 UTCI was recently summoned for jury duty for the first time, and was actually disappointed not to be chosen to sit in on a trial. Have either of you had jury duty before? Were you more curious to see the process first hand, or more annoyed at your life being interrupted? What would you want to see in a video game about being a juror?

2021-11-12 21:11:29 +0000 UTCAre there any game mechanics, design decisions, or features that can destroy your interest in a game? Even if it was something that you were otherwise looking forward to?

2021-11-12 21:04:41 +0000 UTCWhat video game locations, that aren't just utopias/dystopias, would be the best and worst places to live for you?

2021-11-12 21:03:34 +0000 UTCIs Teenage Dirtbags effectively in permanent hiatus? It's alright if it is, but I just miss it so much. I know it was brought up in passing recently, but what are the chances you might eventually do a movie podcast with looser constraints than Unfilmable?

2021-11-12 21:00:54 +0000 UTCDo you have any tips for GMing Shadowrun? I've done it a bit and have a reasonable grasp of the system (at least 5th edition) but I struggle to balance the many different avenues the action can take (1 guy goes online, anothers on the astral plane, 1 dude has possessed a car and the other guy got a disguise). Its especially hard to stop it from being an arms race of counters and it all gets messy when combined.

2021-11-12 20:51:10 +0000 UTCA lot of 8 and 16 bit games thrived on mechanics where a special suit would grant unique abilities a la Tanookis from Mario 3. Any particular favorites from that or other franchises?

2021-11-12 20:42:46 +0000 UTCBethesda has got the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises as their premier WRPG franchises. Bethesda Man calls you and says, Gary and Kole! pick the next genre for our radiant ai, quest explosion, first person, giant rpg franchise. What y’all pitchin?

2021-11-12 20:40:23 +0000 UTCI apolgize if this question has already been answered in one of your podcasts, but you guys do so much great stuff I struggle to keep up. I've been on the record as saying that the Dark Soul games are games I really WANT to like, as they appeal strongly to me with gameplay, graphics, music, etc. And if I was younger and had tons of times I'm sure I'd have them beaten by now. But I'm not young anymore and I don't have the reflexes, the time, or the patience to invest in the games and 'git good' in them. Could you guys perhaps suggest some 'Dark Souls' like games that are fun to play while being easier and less frustrating? Thanks and keep up the good work!

2021-11-12 20:40:07 +0000 UTCOn Bandcamp, Modridge is labelled as "sad bastard music" What artists, or particular albums, would you classify as "happy bastard music"? My best guess is Jimmy Buffet when he made a song about his preferred cheeseburger structure.
