Call and Response: WOFF! Dispatch October 2021

Hello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, October 18 by leaving a comment on this post.

We're looking for two kinds of things:

1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.

2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.

One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.

We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

I, like you two, found Disco Elysium to be a triumph and incredibly cathartic. It got me thinking; are there any other games that deal with break ups? Most games that play in that territory seem to see the fall out of a relationship due to the death of a spouse, but what are some games that deal with plain old breaking up and all the pain thereafter?

Hey dudes, I have recently been watching Gary's Darkest Dungeon Let's Play and re-listened to the old New Vegas episodes, which had an episode on some of the New Vegas mods. What are some of your favorite mods? To narrow it down somewhat, excluding QOL mods such as DSFix or some of the bug fix mods you see for Gamebryo (Elder Scrolls engine) games.

I found myself wanting to hand a student the "Ross & Butterfield Guide to Game Analysis" recently. You two have no room in your schedules for writing such a book at the moment, but that hasn't stopped me from wishing. That one panel you did on game design lessons from Dark Souls leads me to believe you have the requisite teaching chops, if you just had the time. So, here's my pitch: the next time a show on the network wraps up, you replace it with a new show where you hash out the structure and contents of a handbook on game design and criticism. I'd love to listen to you two talk through the process of organizing all the insights you've had -- and lessons you've learned -- about games over the past decade. And then, after paying good money to listen, I'd pay even more good money for the finished product!! (I don't want to pressure you, of course. I just want you to know how happy I would be if such a thing ever happened.) *wink*

Media Question: I'm part of what I suspect is a minority of Duckfeed patrons - people who listen to you guys but, mostly due to lack of time, don't actually play video games. I really connect with your 'podcasting as a service' mantra - letting people like me live vicariously through your rigorous criticism and analysis of games. Are there other areas of media which you don't actively participate in, but read or listen around nonetheless?

James Lewis

hey guys! first, a quick behind the scenes question: back at the beginning of the year, you tried rolling out separate RSS feeds for patrons only. are you still planning on doing that, or has that fallen by the wayside? second, this is more of a media/show question: what are you most looking forward to covering on the various shows across the network?

Cassandra Banner

Possible topic suggestion: Revisiting/Replaying games. If a game gets some kind of DLC after you've played it, like Monster Train, how likely are you to go back to it? What makes you want to? Are there any times you go back to a game you haven't finished but enjoyed? If I'm jumping back into something, like I did with DOS2 over the 2 years it took me to complete that game, I like to rework my character into something different than whatever I was playing before.

William

If you could apprentice under any video game character, who would you choose? What skills would you want to learn from them?

Jonathan Yih

Having slept on this I wanted to add two obvious ones I missed, in case you read comments of comments: - Mega Man - Castlevania

Lucy

With all this news about the Mario movie. Just wondering who do you guys think has the biggest dong in the mushroom kingdom.

Ipoop4U

If Duckfeed were to make a horror movie, what would be the plot and who would play which parts?

SindrElf

In the Spirit of the end of the Resident Evil Episode: If you had the power to end a popular game series after a particular entry, how would you use that power? What games would you declare the "last" in their Franchise. Either pick from your own or use one of these spicy suggestions: - Resident Evil (obvious) - Tomb Raider - Final Fantasy - Elder Scrolls - Metroid - Legend of Zelda - Assasin's Creed

Lucy

What's the most non-conventional animal or animal part you've eaten, and how was it?

Holland Hume

I started re-listening to Monster in my Podcast for spooky month and it's reminded me how much I loved having a five-minuteish podcast with a very long backlog. Do you have any interest in returning to that very-short-form format? It's "one quick chore" perfection.

Matt Bixler! Hello!

Hey Andrew, please send this into duckfeed.tv/contact I know it sounds silly, but everyone can respond to episodes but only patrons can ask us questions, so we keep them in separate channels.

I'm currently trying to finish Resident Evil Village as soon as possible before listening to the new WOFF episode, and it made me think about marathoning games in general. Are there any games/series/genres that you feel lend themselves to being played in irresponsibly long play sessions? Especially if you beat the game and it's way, way past when you intended to go to sleep.

RE8 response: While I enjoyed RE8 overall, I felt like it really leaned on RE4 just enough in some regards, and not enough in others. The environments are the most obvious example of similarities, but the pacing is much faster, for the better. The environments have also been dramatically improved with the Lady D chase sequences and the “oh shit fuck” moments of the Heisenberg’s cyborgs (until you realize they go down easy). One thing I felt was lacking was the “build” variety which gave me hours more replayability in RE4. The weapon upgrades also feel mis-paced, meaning they trickle them out initially and then unlock the rest in the last hour of the game. Minor gripe that I’ll get over. That el gigante/troll bastard recall in the Beneviento cemetery can go to hell though.

Andrew

Did you guys ever make up lyrics to old games' music when you were kids? My little kid mind would just come up with nonsense lyrics to the games on my SNES. I can't remember much of them, but I remember when Mario finishes the level in Super Mario World I used to sing in my head to the jingle "big big motors, they're ripping you off, dunununuh, nuhnuhnuhnuhhhh" Usually I would just sing the name of the game to the music. If you guys have any like this please share.

Show Question: Recently you've said that you think you could cover any sort of game on WOFF. What do you think would be one of the most challenging sorts of games or specific game to cover that you haven't yet?

Andrew T

I’m so happy that you guys included Lisa’s theme in the silent hill episode. I’ve never played any of the games but have watched gameplay and stuff and that scene where she dies is so creepy and heartbreaking and the song really does that scene justice in my opinion. Since we are on the topic of silent hill, would you guys be cool with the first three silent hill games being remade like the recent RE remakes( gameplay and graphics wise obviously)?

Joseph maneol

With it being Rocktober, I was wondering whether you have any spooky movie recommendations (apart from those featured on Unfilmable), particularly ones you've watched for the first time this year. Also, have either of you seen Jug Face? I just watched it this week and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. It's hard to describe, but it feels like competently-made outsider art, if that makes sense. Anyway, Happy Samhain to you both, and don't forget to hail Paimon and live deliciously!

Andrew (andyk250) Koch

Hey, I keep missing the prompts, so first off thank you for all the stuff you're putting out, and at least coming across in podcasts as good, thoughtful guys. Without trying to sound weird and parasocial, your content and approach to talking about things from games to current events has had a real positive impact through what's been a turbulent time, and I hope you're both holding up as well as you can be. Nice and basic question I don't think I've heard before. Do you have go to karaoke songs? If so, what are they?

Josh F

Like many before me, I originally came across y'all via Dark Souls. I stayed for Abject Suffering, and now, thanks to a new job with a long commute, I'm finally starting to appreciate the backlog of WOFFs at my disposal, which are genuinely incredible, by the way - good work. QuizMonsters was also cool - I know you're busy, but any thoughts on some more? Thanks. P. S - SPAGETT. Spooked ya. Happy Halloween.

Conor Eamonn

You guys cover a lot of horror aimed at adults, but I’m curious if you have a favorite kid Halloween movie. I’ve been watching a lot of the Disney Sleepy Hollow and Hocus Pocus with my kids, hence the question.

Doug Lief

Either of you have a "fart you shouldn't have trusted" story you would share?

Tony Sleaze

Holy shit, I just listened to the episode where Kole told the story of when his stepfather parlayed his child's (Kole's) misfortune of being trampled into a Planet Hollywood leather jacket for himself. This made me laugh my ass off. I am certain this is an impossible ask but I would love a recurring "Dudes rock" segment with stories about grown-ups (men, women, non-binary) behaving with brazen self-indulgence to win petty prizes.

Misc/off-the-wall/silly question: Thanos has decided there is too much pop culture in the universe, and with the snap of a finger he is going to erase from existence all movies, albums, games, etc. made in either even or odd years. Being a nice guy, he's giving you the choice: What goes, odd or even? (I suppose you can either assume he'll be a total jerk and erase entire IPs based on the first entry, e.g. odd includes 1977 therefore no Star Wars anything ever. Or instead it's the confusing sequel universe, where odd would leave the Star Wars franchise as like Empire, Attack of the Clones, and the JJ trilogy?)

Have you ever had a real life situation where you feel knowledge, skills, or reflexes obtained from video games has helped you? I have an example of one that happened to me about 15 years ago. At the time I was working for a upscale hotel in Providence RI. A lot of well off people stayed there, and hotel policy was while we could not ask for tips, we were allowed to accept them. As a result we took turns doing shuttle runs to the airport in the hotel van as could be a decent bonus. One day I'm going down a four lane road on the way back to the hotel after picking some people up when a car suddenly pulled out in front of me without looking. On instinct and reflexes alone I jerked the van to the left lane and just missed hitting them. I made the split second decision that if anyone was next to me a sideswipe was better then a rear on collision. Luckily no onw was there. I had been playing a lot of GTA games before hand and I'd like to think that years of playing video games helped with the quick reflexes.

Lisa Trevor and it's not even close.

Adam Bucceri

Prompt: Puzzles in non-puzzle games, what makes them good? Inspired by the puzzle discussion in re8

Videogames dot Afghanistan

Here's a real pedestrian one: what browsers and extensions do you chaps use?

Lewis Shaw

For spooky month (and the Silent Hill 1 episode): if Silent Hill *had* to be rebooted, what studio would you want at the reins and why?

flexyrhead

Lisa Garland vs. Lisa Trevor

I always wondered, when you do a relatively unknown game for WOFF (such as Echo, Singularity, etc.) do you do any research beforehand, such as development, plot, critical reception, or do you go in cold and research afterward?

Andrew F

In honor of spooky month, I was curious if you guys had had a chance to check out Amnesia: Rebirth and what your genera thoughts are on that. Love the show, thanks!
