Exquisite Suffering 133: Solstice

The most notable things about Solstice are its bangin' music and its baffling cover. Beyond that, it's a promising puzzle platformer whose wind is stolen by Europe's fascination with the isometric perspective. Also, we talk about needing lamps to be in society.

Is Q-Bert the best isometric platformer?

Tim Follin is a fucking genius. “Beach” from Plok is genuinely my favorite piece of game music. Insane what that guy could do with a sound chip

My mom always bought us weird NES games from yard sales when my brother and I were kids because we were poor. Solstice was one of the stranger ones. We figured it out eventually with the help of an uncle and game genie codes that gave us infinite lives/potions. The music was amazing but with potions being rare, the awkward isometric platforming, getting lost after falling between floors (often onto spikes a floor or two below you had no way to know were coming), and instant death from just about anything..Well. I don't regret having to cheat our way through this one.
