Unfilmable 36: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a paranoid classic, and also a profoundly strange movie. The pod people are taking over, and the only people who can stop them are... health inspectors? Just kidding, no one can stop them! Because the fatalism inherent to this version of the movie is a huge part of the appeal. Alongside its all-star cast, of course.

For science, from my bi perspective, young Goldblum is unmanageably hot. Been thinking about this too much since streaming that thing he did with Cindy Lauper a few months ago.

Great episode! I was looking forward to this one, and you delivered. :) Just a bit of trivia for you... the reason that the ending for the 1950s version feels weirdly upbeat, is because that wasn't the original ending for the movie. The way the director planned it, was for the movie to end at the scene with Kevin McCarthy's character running out into traffic, looking at the drivers (and straight into the camera, towards the audience!), screaming "THEY'RE ALREADY HERE! YOU'RE NEXT! YOU'RE NEXT!" *cut to credits* The urban legend is that this ending sent test audiences running screaming out of the theatre. I don't know if that's true or not; it sounds pretty similar to the "Orson Welles gave people heart attacks from his War of the Worlds broadcast" myth from around that time. But either way the producers chickened out and asked the director to film the "military gets notified, aliens are rounded up and everyone is fine" ending. Which utterly sucks, but there you go.
