Your Early Release Feed

Edit: This information is out of date as of May 1, 2022. We no longer offer the Early Release perk, and have replaced it with other stuff.

Edit (3/3/22): The march continues to keep this post updated to add answers to peoples' questions. If you use Pocketcasts see the new section for the best way to add this feed to the app. If you download episodes manually, there are instructions for that, too.

Edit (3/2/22): If you have previously subscribed using the Fireside Patreon Auth credentials that I laid out earlier this week, you absolutely need to unsubscribe from that feed and then resubscribe using the directions below. Otherwise you will not get access to anything anymore. I apologize for the inconvenience, I'm doing my best.

Hi! You're a backer and you want to find out how to access the early release feed, aka the Duckfeed Early Bird. This should be simple to access, as long as you have a podcast app that supports podcast feeds which require usernames and passwords.

Please read the post below, follow the instructions, and double check everything before asking for help. Everything here is tested.

Here's what you need to do.

1. Take the url https://duckfeedearlybird.com/rss and paste it into your podcast app of choice. (Alternately, use this URL: https://feeds.fireside.fm/duckfeedearlybird/rss)
2. Enter the following credentials:
username: imaduck
password: crickfarms

This should subscribe you to the feed.

A Note About Pocketcasts

A number of listeners have had problems with Pocketcasts because of the way they serve their feeds. To get around this you must do two things:

1. Use this URL instead when you submit the private feed:  https://imaduck:crickfarms@feeds.fireside.fm/duckfeedearlybird/rss (It encodes the credentials into the URL itself. Use it exactly.)
2. Please, please, please click the "private" checkbox when adding the private feed. Otherwise the premium content is exposed to the public and that's a nightmare to fix. Be kind to your fellow patrons.

A Note About Google Podcasts

Google Podcasts, for some reason, does not allow for password protected feeds. I can't do anything about this on my end. Please submit feature requests to Google, and use Podcast Addict in the meantime. I know some folks get really annoyed at using a separate app, and I get it, but there's nothing I can do that wouldn't entail undoing most of the changes I've made to solve the feed clutter problem in the first place.

If It Doesn't Work Immediately

If it doesn't work, try again. This stuff is stupidly wobbly sometimes and we can't do anything about it. Several people who initially had problems at first also had them go away seemingly on their own, because of weird internet cache stuff. This usually happens within 24 hours.

If you're having trouble adding the feed to your podcast app of choice, please seek out documentation on how to add password protected feeds on your own. There are just too many different podcast apps for us to assist with all of them.

If you need help learning what an RSS feed is or finding an app that is likely to take this feed, Patreon's support page is a good place to start.

To download shows manually

Some folks don't use RSS or other services besides Patreon to get their podcasts, and prefer to download the audio and add it to their devices directly. If you want to do this, you can go to duckfeedearlybird.com, enter the credentials above (it might take a try or two, for some reason) and you can navigate to the posted episodes directly on the grid interface (there's even a search!).

The episode file names will be a string of letters and numbers, but the ID3 data is all accurate if you want to rename them yourself. We can't do anything about this, it's something unchangeable about the way our podcast hosting service works.

This show list is subject to change as our show lineup changes. Additionally, older episodes will be culled from the feed on occasion. This is not the place to do archive dives... We'd recommend subscribing to individual show feeds to accomplish that.

What's happening to the posts on Patreon?

Since our goal is to address feedback about the premium content being too cluttered, it doesn't make sense to keep posting things on Patreon itself. We know some people are used to getting their audio here, but until Patreon offers a better way to filter content from feeds inside of its own platform, Early Release content will be solely available on the special show page and its RSS feed. All other premium content will continue to be delivered here and on their own special private feeds simultaneously.

If you previously listened on the Patreon app or the website itself, this will be a change for you. You can use free apps provided by Apple and Google to subscribe to the show on mobile, and you can use a service like Feedly to subscribe on the web. I apologize for any short term inconvenience this might cause, but it's our belief that it will be much more convenient than the unified feed in the long run.
