Little kid lies are weird. When I was 6, I adamantly told everyone I'd been to Florida...I had not been to Florida. No one cared and it didn't amount to anything, and still have no idea why I did that. It's like I was still trying to figure out how this "lying" thing worked.

When I was 7 my Dermot lie that just got busted the second I said it was that I had a back tattoo. I know I was a dumb kid but I still don't know why I didn't see "Oh yeah? Show us." coming.

our schoolyard Pokémon catching ritual was to rotate the control pad (press up, right, down, left, etc). Weird that there are so many different variants on the same rumor. (We also had more commonly established stuff like the Mew truck and Pikablu, of course)

yeah, seconded. i also think it’s easy to forget that no matter how nice it comes across, your message is just one of dozens, and in aggregate it can be wearying to have lots of people even *politely* disagreeing

It's pretty weird to think about the fact I have listened to literally 100s (maybe 1000s) of hours of you guys talking, and I think sometimes that can fuck with an audiences perception of their relationship to content creators. The dynamic can be really tilted and combined with the fact the internet criticism lacks the nuance of inflection, tone and mannerisms, people can come across as a little shitty or petty when they don't mean to be. I certainly have no advice for creators, but I think as an enjoyer of many podcasts, I would say audiences should try to take some of that burden and just really consider what they have to say when giving feedback. All this to say I'm sorry if my comment about Fifth Element tripped anyone up lol. I was "in the pocket" for it at the time is all. Love all you do!

Thanks so much. I'm the question-asker, and hearing Gary and Kole's amazing response and reading your comment as well has been really good for me knowing I'm not alone here. It's easy to feel like no one else feels burnt out about this kind of thing because it's one of the things people are the MOST careful about hiding (frustrations with one's audience, or frustrations with other people in one's community). I similarly bounced off the Slack when I realized I was doing way too much couching/anticipatory rephrasings and trying to "fit-in" opinion-wise into what I perceived was the dominant stance of the community (but, like you said, was really just a handful of people).

re: hopepunk. there’s a lot of folks in genre fiction who push a kind of compulsory positivity in storytelling. i’ve literally heard, “why does this story need an antagonist?” before and it blows my damn mind.
