Bonfireside Chat 204: Tutorial / West Limgrave

This week we dive into Elden Ring proper with our discussion of the intro cinematic, the tutorial, and all of the dungeons of the West Limgrave region. Limgrave is a beautiful and idyllic place from a distance, but up close you see some disturbing details that show the rot that it's suffering under the inept Lord Godrick. And things are only going to get worse from here.

Oh I know the sneaky thing that’s given away. The barely noticeable character switch Btw it may not be a sun. It’s much smaller than the moons. But if you look up every time day changes you can definitely see a smaller glowing circle in the sky.

Patron is not a impressive platform

Ben Perry

I missed playing Elden ring at launch. I’m glad I have this because for me it maintains the launch experience of hearing about folks talk about the game :)

Bearly_Monetized

Thank you very much so helpful.

Tala Maillot

Ive been a long time listener maybe around 2018 or so, and finally decided to be a member here in Patreon for me to finally follow your Elden Ring take. Im from the Philippines as well, i maybe am the few people here from that side of the World. Umbasa!

Ericboy

Ian Cody

Amazing game! REALLY HAPPY I found BSC . Keep it up You guys deliver great stuff. Greetngs from the Netherlands

NeoRoy75

I just joined your Patreon as I am 100 hours in to Elden Ring and quite obsessed. This is my first From Software experience and I cannot get enough. This is from a 50 year old gamer who isn't quite as dextrous as he used to be.

Phil Date

I felt that way too but then I realized it might just be that when we started, we wanted to explore every nook and cranny and by a certain point, fatigue or curiosity takes over and you start beelining to mandatory boss after boss. I'm using my second play through to be more thorough with every territory - especially the later ones.

Judd W

Am I the only one that lost this episode? like it disappeared from the app.

Mateusz Swietoslawski

That's fair, there's so many different directions folks can go in. Plus the portals. Really looking forward to hearing about your experiences with The Chest! Mine was basically a 2-hour loop of yakkety-sax and going in ALL the wrong directions.

Emil

Im not denying there is lore to justify it, I’m just saying they were inspired by actual dung.

Tyko 3

Naw. Everyone does Elden Ring in a different order, it seems, so we aren't trying to present the game in a playorder at all.

Duckfeed.tv

Gary+Cole - is the Limgrave episode in the order that you did things? If so, very funny that you did all the dungeons before the Godrick camp which is definitely intended as the first destination.

Emil

Have followed you guys all the way since the very start. Its been such a journey and I'm so delighted that I'm once again looking forward to Bonfirside Chat episodes popping up in my feed. We are all a little older and a little slower, but our passion for Fromsoft has never waned!

CrabbyTerror8

Look up the lore on the omenborne, ala Morgott and Mohg, and the rest of the omenborne you encounter with the random horns sprouting about their bodies. The Dung Eater is the most defiant omenborne imaginable, basically.

Evan Sidley

Why doesnt anyone ask Varre where HIS maiden is!?

Casey Jackson

Missed listening to you guys. I have made it a habit to listen to you any time I restart a playthrough of a From Soft game. I trully appreciate the dedication to detail and analysis of the games that you painstakingly craft for us. That said, you cannot convince me the Dung Eaters armor is peppered with horns. Those are clearly corn and his armor is meant to resemble a piece of shit.

Tyko 3

Am I the only one who got sad when I couldn't cut off that first watchdog/cat's flaming tail?

Carlo Cabanilla

Yeah, Miquella and Malenia are both children of Marika + Radagon I think? And their names start with M to avoid ambiguity with Rennalla + Radagon's children.

Alexander Austin

To keep it simple, I think all the characters sharing lineage start with the same letter. Godfrey and Marika are parents of Godwyn, Mohg, and Morgott. Radagon and Rennala are parents to Ranni, Rykard, Rahdan. There's a lot of entwining but I'm fairly sure it holds true

Colin Larkins

Please start saying ‘grace’ in the style of Gabriel Knight. That is all

Morgan

I really like the pace this seems to set for this season of the show, very happy you’ll be covering the areas at length like this. Will make this season in its entirety a great resource for people to come back to in future, a sourcebook as you said.

Jon Cheetham

It took me a second (10 hours) to acclimate to this but leveling up that commie hammer from stormveil and beating godrick to death with it is one of the most satisfying narrative things I’ve done in a game.

Billiam

I hope the narrator was paid well. Never thought I would get chills hearing the word dung eater lol.

Ipoop4U

Loved the episode! Super-happy to be able to once again listen to BFSC while playing a From game! Only critique I have is that I'd personally prefer a slightly more conservative approach to spoilers. I'm perfectly fine with you going through NPC quests ahead of time since I can easily skip forward, and I also expect to get vague hints on what'll happen, like "You find out more about X later and it's really cool!" But I found things like "it looks like she's missing an eye but we find out later she's not" to give away a potentially cool surprise very early. Though I doubt this'll be an issue much longer since I'll probably be done with the entire game by the time you get to Stormveil Castle. And I'll happily listen along regardless of how you handle this! :)

Patrik

I'm so happy to be listening to another BFSC series, loved the episode! Even now 150+ hours in I am still learning new things about this game thanks to you guys. I wanted to share how I am feeling about Hero's Graves at the moment. I did have similar negative feelings towards them but recently I've been finding enjoyment in them. I really liked the one with the Troll Shade that you had to lure into the light. I think my initial aversion to them came down to me finding them while I was pleasantly exploring the overworld, and not wanting to interrupt that with a multi-hour challenge dungeon. So now what I tend to do is go down and unlock the grace site, put a map marker next to it to remind myself to come back later when I actually want a dungeon delve. I'll put my story of the first Hero's Grave here, just to share what I enjoyed about it. Apologies if it goes over-long! I spent so long trying to figure out how to beat the Fringefolk Hero's Grave in Limgrave. I would dip in and out of it over many hours, checking back in occasionally as I grew in levels and power, each time finding a new branching path leading to yet another obstacle. For the bigger warriors, I would lure them out to get run over by the chariot, and for the double grafted scion fight, I basically dashed for the item then threw myself off the ledge instead of fighting them. Eventually I returned many levels later and murdered them just to prove a point. Praise the revenge! The Ulcerated Tree Spirit fight was a whole other level though, and it wasn't until much much later that I was finally able to best him, armed with upgraded weapons and a plethora of powerful sorceries. It was during that last run that I decided to go up and fight that big warrior on the ledge, just to see if I could beat him "fair and square" this time. Turns out that I could, and while I was up there I noticed the pots hanging from the ceiling. I felt like a genius when, after some admittedly quite irritating trial and error, I shot the string with an arrow and the Chariot exploded into pieces. It was one of those moments where I thought "surely this will never work...", but then it did! When I finally cleared the whole dungeon out, it felt like I'd truly reached a new level of skill and knowledge with the game. Not only had I combed through the whole thing, I'd even destroyed the seemingly indestructible murderbox that had been harassing me in this area since the start of the game many many hours ago. Superb!

Feir

I think it's super funny that Varre is the first npc you run across. I didn't notice he was wearing a mask, so I just assumed NPCs in this didn't have animated lips.

Ken Yuen

Weird thing but I was listening to this last night and fell asleep with it playing. Cole's "Ergh, I want to go home" at the end woke me up in a cold sweat. in conclusion 10/10

Zach M

I think the sun eventually shows up after you kill Radahn, actually. Some folk on the slack were saying it's visible, but I checked and I think it's modal.

Duckfeed.tv

I can't believe I didn't notice that there isn't a sun until hearing y'all say it in this episode. I love learning things like that from this show. It begs the question of what Goldmask's mask is depicting. When talking about the opening cutscene, Gary mentioned that Gideon Ofnir is buried with a bunch of treasure. I'm pretty sure those are all ears, a very specific kind of treasure, that are in his sarcophagus. Very much looking forward to the rest of the series. Keep up the great work!

Kevin Marcellus Horan

So glad to have this back! Always interesting to hear other impressions of what does and doesn't work in a From game.

Trevor W.

Looks like "Elleh" (Aramaic) is related to "Elohim" (Hebrew), meaning "God's/Lords" -- could be that the intended meaning is "Church of Lords".

Tracewidth

Ahh, yes. Ghostface Varré.

Tracewidth

Looking forward to the deep lore dive on THE DESPICABLE MANURE CONSUMER

Cameron McLeod

Glad to have bonefire sidechat back

RafaeL Carballo

great episode. glad you guys are back at it!

Lucy Diavolo

honestly can't wait to hear you guys talk more about the notorious poopoo scarfer

anonymous

This is a great suggestion.

Nicholas Prior

Can't wait to dig into this on my Monday work day.

Mcav86

Im starting up a Rune Level 1 character challenge to play through with the show! Wish me luck! You two make some of the best souls content around!

Richard Everett

Behold the GRRM naming conventions 😂 still love his contributions just the same.

Justin Zode

The open world nature of this game may prompt the need for compass call outs from a designated landmark when describing unique destinations in the area being discussed. I thought I had already thoroughly explored Limgrave. Now I think I still may have missed something.

Dustin Burt

Heck yeah! <3

Juli Reed

The Godfrey / Godwyn / Godrick / Godefroy naming thing is definitely hard to keep straight. I had to look up the last one just now because I literally couldn't remember what the name of that character was (as they're much less important / relevant than the other characters who fall under that naming pattern). I think the thing that makes it harder to keep the "God"-prefix folks distinct, compared to Gwyn and his kids, is that Gwyn's name is a) the shortest, and b) obviously the root of the others' names. While it would've been deeply silly, I doubt anyone would be confused as to whom the First Elden Lord was if they'd just called him "God" and stopped there. :)

Alexander Austin

New BFSC episode & Iron Pineapple video on the same day? Giddyup.

Daniel Toy

Oh lordy it's finally arrived. Is it sad that I've been excited just to hear you guys talk about the intro narration?

BAAAAAARNES

First time listening real-time with release. Hype!
