Bonfireside Chat 205: Limgrave East / Mistwood

This week we head east of the gate to Stormhill and follow the road all the way down through Mistwood and to Fort Haight. Topics discussed include Boc's storyline, the Night's Cavalry boss fights, the beginning of Kenneth Haight's quest, Mistwood Forest, the elevator to Siofra, and Fort Haight itself.

We would also like to remind you that we are experimenting with a weekly release format, meaning shorter episodes that come out more frequently, but with the same level of detail that we had before. Next week we will talk about Limgrave South and Limgrave North, up through the Stormgate area.

We'd also like to announce that we have new show art! It was time, we figured, to commission a cover that is specific to Elden Ring. Check it out...

The artist is Ellie, aka @ells_ink, and you can find all of her info here at her Linktree. She sells buttons and will soon have other commissions open.

Love your podcast had to get patron well worth it

Mike Edmondson

I don’t even think it’s possible to object to this, the blood hound sword is easily the best weapon of the game for the widest range of bosses/ enemies and accessibility. It’s basically a better version of the Dark Souls black knight sword. You can use it the entire game

Jessie joy

Stoked as fuck I have so much season of BSC Elden Ring to relisten to this is wild. 2 years of listening to some dudes talk about games I love. Hahaha the internet is good for some things.

Superfluous is a word that native speakers definitely use, it's a synonym for redundant but I think it has less negative implications redundant is not needed, superfluous is more than you need. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

Adam Storrow

I am not a native speaker. I hear the word `superfluous` and had to google it as I have never ever heard it in my entire life. Out of curiosity, why are you not saying "redundant" or is "superfluous" actually a word that some native speaker might really say in a conversation? Is it maybe superfluous? :D

David Schkalee

Marika, fuck yeah!

Owlology

*chanting* Boc's our boy! Boc's our boy! Boc's our boy!

Zach M

Agreed, repetitive dungeons and ridiculous boss attack spam definitely soured the last 1/3 for me. Still a great game—I'll play it again—but I was absolutely struggling with my DEX build in the late game, and tapped out to summon human help for a couple of the tougher bosses toward the end. Spirit ashes became mandatory for me otherwise. I *think* this is by design—From wants you to use the spirit ashes, consumables, etc. but it felt really overtuned just for the sake of We Make Difficult Games (TM). It made Dark Souls 3 seem tame in comparison!

Jonathan R

For me the issue is more the Lore feels uninteresting and often unexplained, the NPC queetlines do not work for an open world, and while there's plenty of freedom of approach in terms of build variety (an improvement over all post de2 titles) you are almost always going to get one shot and two shot by mid and late game bosses even if you've capped out vigor, which is just an uninteresting way of increasing the difficulty to me. I have some more specific complaints about specific bosses and or areas but I think my general frustration is the absurd difficulty Spike (s) and repetitive nature of the world (both in terms of fighting the same boss over and over and just the mini dungeons themselves feeling repetitive)

Dani Doyle

I love Kenny! He's a genuinely good dude who tries to do the right thing based on the tenets of his religion. As the gods reached down to make peace with humans, so should humans make peace with demi humans. He's just very out-of-touch with what's going on around him and a little stupid, but a solid bro nonetheless.

Matthew Lee

Not necessarily! I'm firmly in the 'it's good' camp, but there are definitely parts I'm critical of. Fromsoft is retreading some of the same overarching themes and mechanics that they used in Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne - which, well it makes for good games but I think those same characteristics are nearing the end of their shelf life and I'm honestly not sure where From can go from here.

Emil

Great to hear.. I assume I'll be in the minority but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️. At least I can vicariously enjoy the game through the podcast.

Dani Doyle

We will do response episodes from time to time, yeah.

Duckfeed.tv

Are there going to be response episodes? Ill be honest, I'm very down on Elden Ring (in terms of lore and uninteresting difficulty, it feels even worse than ds3) and am curious if anyone else feels this way. Im glad yall are enjoying it so much (and jealous) but after the first few areas I just... Am not enjoying myself anymore. This might end up being the first from game I don't finish.

Dani Doyle

Ellie Art for the win!!!!!

Evan Connolly

The latter

joe lopez

Do you mean the Mer-Ick-Uh or the Mar-Reek_uh?

Duckfeed.tv

another unfortunate coincidence to people pronouncing "Marika" wrong is they pronounce it in a way that is also a gay slur in Spanish. Not that they're at fault, but I've seen so many streamers pronounce it that way and it makes me cringe every time lol.

joe lopez

Look at him standing there, on his hind legs like a little Rory Calhoun. I love it….Keep em coming!! I make this reference all the time and mostly get blank stares.

Bobby Guano

i lost my shit when i met Blaidd and realized their Guts analogue for this game was literally a big furry wolf man. like i took frenzy damage but in a good way

sleepysmiles

Your prattling pate impressions- please more of these, I'm dead

Chelsea Rebecca

Also, Rya is a real sweetheart.

Emil

There is one telescope that serves a purpose in the game. In Liurnia, Rya asks you to find prawn guy and get her necklace. It's quite hard to find prawn guy's shack because it isn't on the map and there's fog hiding trees, ghost bell ringing jerks and death lobsters for miles in every direction. BUT! There's a telescope right by Rya which reveals the location of prawn guy's shack.

Emil

We explain the rationale for this in the first episode! And we're not going area by area to avoid spoilers.

Duckfeed.tv

Great episode! Another interesting note to throw into the discussion of the birdseye telescopes is that in an interview during development, From mentioned that there would be watchtowers where you could survey the landscape and mark things on your map (similar to the map markers but like botw where you can do it while looking through binoculars). While not a watchtower it is functionally similar, and I could see them being a vestige of that. Also as a small factoid, in the Network Test there was another Birdseye Telescope up in Stormhills as well, gesturing toward them being much more common at one point. EDIT: The other telescope was out of bounds of the CNT, just off the road leading to the Warmaster's Shack in the full game).

thelorehunter

Good lord. I didn't notice that altering armor to remove capes made them slightly lighter, but that is some From-ass attention to detail right there. Also, i need to draw attention to the very good joke that is using the term "Herzoged" to describe bear attacks.

Jonathan Scratch

The spoiler warning is at 13:15, btw

Stephen Swartz

I didn't hear any spoiler warning about Boc before they talked about him, and they did discuss only the beginning of Kenneth's. But yeah it's not a big deal and he is a pretty minor character all things considered. I didn't mean to come off too annoyed, I just genuinely expected them to only cover as much of the quest as was accessible in the area, so I had to quickly skip ahead a few minutes because I missed his quest in my first playthrough and I'm on my second right now

Austin W Smith

I get where you'recoming from, but in fairness to the boys, they gave multiple warnings about the spoiler policy, the reason given that it doesn't make sense to divide a character's questline into multiple installments over months of coverage when it's like a paragraph long in its entirety. I can see it being a bummer for folks trying to play along with the cast, but they were very clear about their intentions.

tundacct

Kinda annoying that you guys decided to go area-by-area to avoid spoilers, yet you go ahead and completely spoil a character's entire questline that goes further into later areas. Still overall a big fan and enjoying your coverage, but that was a bit unfortunate.

Austin W Smith

Fun episode! Also, I hate to be "that guy" but Siofra is an Irish word and it's pronounced SHEE-fra.

Allison Baker

Funny you should mention the Resemblance between the Nights Cavalry and the Nazgûl because SPOILER I’m pretty sure there are 9 Nights Cavalry throughout the Lands Between, and there were 9 Nazghûl! Cool reference

Eli

I wanted to vote but couldn't so this makes me so happy.

shea dewar

Bladee Drain Gang

Joshua Kaluba

Thanks this is wonderful! Weekly episodes please <3

Joshua Kaluba

Enjoyed the shorter format personally! Can't wait for next week!

Paul K

Weekly episodes baby! Let's fuckin go

Drake Kincannon

That Siofra River reveal is one of the best moments in any game I’ve ever played. Might be the most visually striking area in a video game imo

Zach Evans

it’s actually pronounced blay-dee

Zach Evans

Also, as someone that has to work every Sunday, I'm very happy to have BSC as a balm to tide over the annoyance every week. Thanks for changing up the frequency.

Ragavan Suresh

The art looks spectacular! Kudos to the artist and you guys for procuring such good art.

Ragavan Suresh

Can't wait to listen! Maybe I'm greedy but I'm happy you're doing weekly eps - love that Elden Ring coverage!
