Unfilmable 38: The Wicker Man (1973)

The Wicker Man is a classic of folk horror, a foundational story about a man whose traditional ways and authority have no sway in a dangerous and unfamiliar environment. He's tracking down a missing girl, Rowan Morrison, on Summerisle, a Scottish island controlled by a pagan cult. This is a very weird movie, with a centerpiece performance by Christopher Lee as the main villain. It's brightly lit, it's a musical, and it's the horniest possible thing.

Weird thing to admit: I've never seen it! -GB

Good episode about one of my favorite movies. I'd love to see y'all cover Rosemary's Baby sometime

Chewing Our Tongues Off

I've been catching up on the patreon bonfireside chat episodes. But when I saw that you were talking about this movie I knew it'd have to be the next podcast I checked out once I caught up. I listened to BSC 208 last night, then the first 4 unfilmables. I want to watch the dunwich horror before episode 5 so I decided to treat myself and jump to this one while I was at work.

Hebrides nuts.

It took me watching the movie, listening to your podcast, reading the entire TV Tropes page, watching The Wicker Tree on youtube and it was only when I got told on Friday that Monday was our May Day bank holiday that I cottoned on to the timing of release for this one !

I love this film. Sorry you didn't mention 'Gently Johnny' but there are too many bangers in this film to talk about. I'm really enjoying the newly en-horned sexed up Gary and Kole though. It's real fun!

Lewis Shaw

Can I ask what else you watched? I watched Jug Face after watching this.

Thanks for covering this movie guys, I've been meaning to watch it and you gave me the excuse. This movie is so much fun! Watching the villagers fuck with this uptight Christian cop for 90 minutes was amazing. I watched this movie on a lunch break at 1.25 speed so I could fit the whole thing in, and it made the montage of Howie searching the houses into a real Benny Hill scene. The tweezer-looking things that the women attack Howie-as-Punch with are called slapsticks! Smaller versions are used in old Punch and Judy shows. When you smack something with a slapstick the two sticks hit together to make a loud slapping sound. And as you can guess, that's where the term slapstick comes from. In case there was any question that this movie is part comedy!

Really enjoying the episode so far, but as a proud Scotsman it pains me to hear you referring to Ireland so often! The film was made, and set, in Scotland. There aren't enough great films from Scotland, so please don't take this one from us :) On the other hand, your first go at pronouncing Hebrides was spot on. Heb-ree-deez

It's such a strange choice. Usually body doubles for nude scenes are because the actor or actress doesn't want to do it. If she was willing, I can't imagine her butt wouldn't have been worthy of the role.

Barac Wiley

yknow, i kinda cant blame Britt Ekland for being annoyed about her booty double. i’d also feel like “what’s wrong with *my* ass huh >:/ ??!”

If you like the prog/psychedelic/folk music of the film, check out the first album by the band Comus. It's a fairly dark album but full of just real catchy songs about evil fairies.

JC

Always loved this film when I was a kid as it was one of the few set in Scotland, especially the remote parts, oh and Britt Ekland who was one of my first memories of an attractive naked woman on TV

Ronald MacDonald

this movie sent me on a psych-folk binge that everyone in my house was kind enough to put up with until i was done

Them goats be spittin and fartin

Terra Parker

If you all are interested in more folk horror, get in touch with Howard P Ingham, and tell them Terra Parker sent you; that's their area of expertise, in like a "this person has won awards writing about the subject" way

Terra Parker

The song that ends the movie, 'Sumer is icumin in' has a line about how summer is great because the Goats are farting.
