Bonfireside Chat 208: Stormhill East

This week we head to the easternmost reaches of Stormhill, exploring the dungeons, learning about Deathroot, and meeting an important NPC (and an NPC whose existence is not justified). We also head down into the very beginning stretches of the Weeping Peninsula, meeting Irina and learning about the struggles at Castle Morne.

Godwyn definitely was the favorite son likely set to be the ruler one day. Not Miquella. Miquella is the most loved Demigod of all in lands between, not necessarily his own family. Remember he is born with a birth defect. Something Marika and Golden Order are not fond of. Godwyn was born the most perfect manifestation of the golden order unlike the others.

I know this is 2 years late and you guys might be aware, but in case you aren't, Fangamer has an Alexander plush now! https://www.fangamer.com/products/elden-ring-alexander-warrior-jar-plush

Nice Blue Comedy call back, Kole lol. The awkward back and forth on that part is still funny to me two years later. Ron White Faced…🤣

Thanks

I feel like D’s twin brother is a way bigger spoiler than you two are making it seem. It’s like the only real cool moment in his quest line.

Fair! My only rebuttal would be that a lot of stuff like that ends up feeling, for lack of a better word, easter-eggy? Siofra may mean that, but Siofra River isn't an area where child swapping is important to the zone. It's hard to justify learning how to pronounce a couple dozen new words in exchange for such? If that makes sense. -GB

Just shooting some very gentle pushback on the conversation re: it doesn’t matter about pronouncing Síofra correctly. I get that Gaelic is pretty difficult to pronounce, but there’s some great context and theme info contained in the Gaelic words used by the writers of Elden Ring. Síofra means “changeling”, they were babies that were swapped to be raised by humans by fairies in Gaelic myth. So Síofra river is a bit of a “changeling” inverse of the above ground. This theme of parasitic behavior, specifically brood parasitism is omnipresent in the lore of the game. The Raya Lucarian Knights are called “cuckoo knights” famously cuckoos swap out their eggs for eggs of other birds so they can be raised for them. If you just think Síofra is a silly made up word that doesn’t have meaning you’re leaving a lot of rich folklore meat on the bone. There’s an article on screen rant about Irish folklore connections in Elden Ring that’s worth checking out. https://screenrant.com/elden-ring-irish-culture-mythology-monsters-weapons/amp/ Love the show! -Josh

I would love to hear you guys broadcast from inside a warrior jar. Can we call it Pot Casting?

Cian Tormey

Yeah, that all tracks. There's just almost no text to him

the first time i encountered a Tibia Mariner i just kept repeating “TIBIA MARINER” aloud to myself in disbelief. a skeleton boatman named the Tibia Mariner. This game has the best bestiary since Shadow Tower. In fact, it *needs* a proper in game bestiary where i can look at details of all the monster models. if any recent From game has demanded that it’s this one

sleepysmiles

The original item description for turtle meat was "Turtle meat is said to boost virility, but none in the Lands Between seem to have the appetite for it these days. In the Lands Between, the urge to reproduce has waned long ago."

Josh

I believe D is a mirror to some other characters who share the same body, but D is one soul (housed within the armour) with two bodies. When we receive D's armour and hand it to his Twin, he suddenly feels whole again and resumes his quest as his "brother" would. He and Fia are at ends because she wants to mother the children of Godwyn, who lives in death himself, but why theyres so little around their quest is kinda strange to me.

Josh

That's interesting.. so I guess it's specific weapons and specific incantations? That's so weird I get the being archaic is one of From's things but I wish that they would just explain how mechanics work 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dani Doyle

Interesting. The Erdtree bow seems like its associated with the Golden Order based on the description (kinda) so I bet some of their weapons do it too. I wish From were more consistent on the item descriptions in this entry. Some have very authoritative text that says "x does y" and then others will just hint at it. But that's From for ya.

Kalem Wedemyer

So, holy arrows from the erd tree bow will do it in my first play through. So maybe there are exceptions? But it's definitely not just specific incantations.

Duckfeed.tv

Second this. Holy damage might be effective against the skeletons, but their "soul" still needs to be killed as a follow up (I played as a holy paladin in the early game). There are Golden Order incantations that keep them down (based on their description, I personally did not use those so can't confirm).

Kalem Wedemyer

I'm liking the new weekly format, it's not quite as juicy as a full two hours but as soon as I've worn an episode out a new one is ready to go, thanks for the hard work!

Danny Cressy

I might be wrong about this one but I'm pretty sure that holy damage is not what permanently kills skeletons instead specific incantations of the golden order permanently kill skeletons.. holy Grease for example will not keep a skeleton down forever.. I might be wrong about that but I'm pretty sure that's how it works in this game

Dani Doyle

One of my favourite goofy enemies in all From's games. To their credit they do try and make the mariners a little more tricksy later in the game, but they are still extremely silly and easy fights. It's a nice change of pace from some other bosses.

Agree Ben - For me ERs content is spread too thin, and in a valiant effort to cover nearly all of it, this season has felt a little unfocused and rambling this year. For prior seasons, I was excited to load up an episode for (prime example) Central Yarnham or (random example) No Man's Wharf because I had strong memories of running through those very distinct areas. I can't say the same for "Limgrave West" or "Stormhill East" etc. I think this is more a criticism of the game than G&C though. They're stellar as always. For me, the game just seems to be defying the format of the show.

Rob

This season has started to clarify for me what I most enjoy about Bonfireside Chat episodes…as well as what I enjoy less. I love discussions of bosses, encounter design, world building, build choices, and macro commentary on each area (ex: past seasons when Kole would come up with a “thesis statement” for what a given area was trying to communicate to players). Unfortunately, I’m less into NPC and questline minutiae. It’s probably the one significant part of these games I struggle to really get into. That’s partly why I’ve been struggling to get into this season quite as much so far. I’m really looking forward to the Margit and Godrick episodes, a commentary on the Stormveil layout, etc. It goes to show how expansive Elden Ring is that after 6 episodes, we still haven’t made it to the first main story boss. I realize this is just me and my preferences, so I don’t even mean this as a critique of Gary and Kole. Their vibe is still as good as ever and I’m still a happy subscriber. Just trying to find my rhythm again with this show given the nature of Elden Ring and its scope.

Ben Taylor

Not sure I've heard a more true statement than, the tibia mariner "passes the vibe check". Love those guys.

Great episode! Just wanted to say I love D’s armour so much that it’s one of my all time favourite fromsoft designs, I wish I could say the same for their actual character, as I found D to be pretty underwhelming on that front. Makes me think they knew they had an amazing armour piece, but didn’t know how to fit it into the game, so they rushed together a character to serve as a mannequin for it. Btw, love the weekly episodes, I definitely prefer how it’s being done now 😊

Darren Antos

Love the show guys! I do have to say that I think the pace of the show suffers a bit from the 1-hour format. I feel you dont get to the same level of speculation and deep discussion as before. In any case, this is my favourite part of the week. Thank you!

yaaay!!!

Thanks for the early upload, gentlemen.

Loving these shorter weekly posts. Happy Mother’s Day to Queen Merika
