Bonfireside Chat 210: The Weeping Peninsula West

The Weeping Peninsula is rich with foreshadowing of major players and themes to come, and our first exposure to many mysteries about what forces tangle with the Golden Order. We head into the northern forests and westward, talking about the Demihuman Forest Ruins, the Wandering Mausoleum, the Tower of Return, and so much more.

Next week we take our chomp at Stormveil Castle and finally get some revenge on that terrible Margit.

I’m surprised nobody has brought up the mind bending irritation of the crouch button getting you killed constantly lol I started just erasing the R3 button and then turning back on when necessary

Listening again for my DLC playthrough. I have an idea about the roaming mausoleums, but haven't digested enough lore for it to make sense. I'm wondering how to tie it together. It feels to me like they exist to protect the bodies of the demi-gods from any force that would try to take them and "use" them (not sure what I mean by that yet), sort of how miquella's body is stolen, Godwyn's body seems to be a source of power, and all the other parts of the game where corpses and body parts are "taken" and used by another. I'm sure there's something there... will be fun keeping this in mind as I continue to play along and re-listen. I'm sure I am just discovering stuff that is years old and been analyzed into the ground!

Lhutel the headless shout out. Shes been my favorite throughout the game.

The only thing about the cemetery shade that i can think of is they hit you with a web that incapacitates you and then sucks your brains out, not sure if you got to experience that.

To add on, another part of this is that I think sun being pretty hidden, small, and dull was an intentional choice. The big fat tree literally outshines it.

Hey guys, I was listening to another podcast about "unhinged lore speculation" and found and interesting tidbit about the demigods found in the wandering mausoleums. The lore is specifically stated on the Bandai Namco website. Here's the video, the timestamp is around 1:57:12 https://youtu.be/d0czEJZY5Ss

Zac Sanchez

Hey, there is a lot of discussion in the lore community about the sun and I want to note that you guys may have been less off track than you think. I think you were correct that the Erdtree is essentially a replacement for the sun, and even though the sun does exist it’s hardly referenced and doesn’t really fit in to the metaphysical world of the Golden Order (unlike the moon). The two places the sun is referenced that I remember are the Shield of the Sun item (which is implied to be very old) and Castle Sol, which is tied up with Miquella’s quest to make a second Erdtree, and perhaps one of the preconditions of an Erdtree is that it outshines the sun. Here’s the Shield of the Sun item description dropped by skeletons: *Shield of honor depicting a city crowned by the sun. It has seen better days.* *Much like the wear upon the shield, the Seat of the Sun is long faded away.* I speculate that there was an earlier order formed on the sun before the Erdtree existed. Just an idea. But ultimately I think that visually the sun is meant to be blocked out by the Erdtree. That’s what the Golden Order wants, imo, and I don’t fault you for not seeing it immediately. For all intents and purposes, the Erdtree has replaced the sun.

definitely possible, yeah. it happens a lot

I think we're going to split them into back to back episodes. Again though, i don't think it'll functionally be different other than a to be continued in the middle. Same content just over two weeks instead of all at once, but with a week long break.

Is Salt & Sanctuary the other game with inscrutable, esoteric item description lore? I know Kole suggested Blasphemous, but I feel like I remember you chaps critiquing that aspect of S&S…

Morgan

I’m loving the weekly one hour episodes for the overworked continents, but I think it would be absolutely incredible to cover all the legacy dungeons in marathon episodes like we saw for the unforgettable Dark Souls 3 coverage. I know that’s a lot to ask, but since it shouldn’t be more than one legacy dungeon every couple of months, perhaps doable? Just something to think about. Keep up the incredible quality, it’s been absolutely worth becoming a patron.

Justin Zode

What is the thing directly north of the roombas you guys think might be calling them? The big boss of the lake of rot?

Frank Byrne

I can only speak for myself but the conversational nature is something that I enjoy.. it just feels like two friends having a good time talking about something they both love. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dani Doyle

I think my comment might have been rude, and i apologise. And I think you're right and the pod is not right for me, so i'll unsubscribe. Wish you both all the best

Colin Magee

Sad to say that the show is not for you then. Our natural conversational cadence has a lot of verbal affirmation, which annoys some folks. We don't take the feedback personally, but it's not going to change. -GB

It seems that every time one of you make a point, after a short silence the other person says “yea”, often followed by the other person saying “yea”, and then sometimes there’s a third “yea” So I feel like much of dialogue goes like this: “It’s a very well designed boss” “…..yea” “…yea” “Yea” Please, please listen to the number of yeas your doling out. I know it might sound like I’m trolling but I literally bailed on this episode half way through

Colin Magee

I love how “there’s no sun in the lands between” is the “Star Trek 2 is in San Francisco” of the season. Never give in boys!

Andrew

im with Gary re: the sun. Even if there is one (and the lore takes i enjoy best suggest there isn’t, at least not anymore) i think it was a pretty clear/deliberate choice to make the light of the Erdtree vastly outstrip it. which is bitchin’ imo

All the walking mausoleum talk highlights to me how easily this game could have fallen into generic fantasy - something which I think DS2 was a little guilty of. But generally, FromSoft is fantastic about adding a unique tinge of sadness or horror to traditional genres. Enemies like the walking mausoleums or animals like the rolling goats/rams make the world come to life, without feeling generic. The soft-spoken dialogue of FromSoft NPC’s has also always had this undefinable haunting quality to it as well, much like the world and enemy design.

1st Souls game for me! I’ve had such an awesome time, and for whatever reason this game has had so many “moments” for me. As an admitted casual gamer turned Elden Ring fanatic, I just was grinning from ear to ear when I experienced my 1st “portal” from the treasure chest. I inadvertently yelled out - you bastards!! 😂😂 I was so scared I teleported out of there like I stole something. For context, it took me about 20-30 hours to get to Godrick. No shame here, I’ve been having so much fun just exploring and overcoming the various enemy challenges. I’m 150 hours in and I just now got to Mt. Gelmir. I’m just having a blast.

Sean

I don't think I'll ever forget coming over the hill in the weeping peninsula and seeing the wandering mausoleum down on the plane in front of me. One of the coolest set pieces in the game. Excellent use of the sound in the intro as well!

Sbeve

I think we basically addressed this when we talked about it, but one issue with that, as well, is as we move on, fewer and fewer people will have Elden Ring fresh in their memory. The remit of the show is to take a slow long look at something and in the past, guests often don't have fresh memories for such things. That said, guests will definitely comment on gameplay and bosses, just more of what sticks out in their memory than what is happening in the specific episode of the show.

Thanks Toby!

Kole wondered about what determines which mausoleums have full copying functionality and which don't - some mausoleums don't have bells, and those ones have more limited copying functionality.

Toby

Just want to share this with Gary and Kole if they haven’t already seen it. An excellent (ongoing) Twitter thread by an artist journaling their Elden Ring adventures. It’s truly a thing I wish I could be good at, but still so happy to see it come to page this way: https://twitter.com/stepickford/status/1498233287214575616

Mystic Referee

I know youve commented on the loss of guest episodes with every weekly release but what are your thoughts on having guests exclusively for the larger legacy dungeon eps like Stormveil or Raya lucaria. I know youve proposed guest eps that focus more on a general impression but I miss having the fresh perspectives on the moment to moment gameplay.

What the Cemetery Shades remind me of are the Mad Specters that the Witch of Hemwick summons

Can't wait to download, crack a seigbrau, and give this a listen.
