Bonfireside Chat 211: Stormveil Castle (Part 1)

It's time we finally show that horny bastard Margit what we're made of, so we storm Stormveil Castle and find the horrors inside. This is part one of two, covering the Margit fight, the insides of the castle walls, Sorcerer Rogier, and the grisly grafting kitchens. Next week's episode will take us up through the Godrick fight.

Ha ha, that's true. I imagine that's just the kind of plot hole you can't really avoid when you're making an action game

Terra Parker

I think you're largely right, I just think it's a really weird beat to let someone in a locked gate and then try to keep them out. -GB

Ah! Haven't met them yet.

Peter Savage

Regarding Gostoc's motivation to open the gate if you want to go that way, it's because regardless of his little tricks against you he definitely, absolutely wants Godrick dead because he hates his guts. Regarding the people at the gate itself, I'm pretty sure they open it when he says so because that's his job and they have to listen to him, he's the Gatekeeper. I don't think it's anything more complicated than that; it's just simple disunity and a sign of Godrick's power base being extremely unstable to the point that he can't even keep assassins from walking in the front door, which is why Margit has to give him a helping hand at the storm bridge in the first place.

Terra Parker

Yeah, we in fact meet one of their in-between relatives in a forever jail later on near the Grand Lift

Terra Parker

Gonna have to make a unionize stormveil shirt now

Hey! You asked about Ravenmount assassins, and you do get their set in Altus in the Sage's Cave where you get a little bit about them. They are doing a ritual imitation of the Deathbirds and the Skeletal Mask constantly digs into their face to maintain their human instincts while they do their imitation of a Deathbird. The Raptor's Black feathers armor also increases the power of jumping attacks.

I initially fell into the trap of thinking Margit was bullshit. I feared that he was indicative of what my experience was going to be like through the games bosses, but he exists as a foil to what you come to expect. For beginners he offers a glimpse into the complexity of future fights and punishes panic rolling and greedy attacks, while for veterans he punishes your confidence by being more of a challenge than almost all other early game souls' bosses. Love the mechanics and lore of this guy, Margitt's a 10/10.

i really could not help but laugh at Margit negging you for what felt like a full minute after you just kicked his ass and made him disappear in a boss haze

I'm not sure there's any direct mention of Godrick being Godwyn's son...if I remember correctly, all we are told is that he is a descendent of Godfrey, but not how. My impression is that he's more than two generations removed.

Great episode! Best castle they’ve ever made. Been replaying Bloodborne and though Cainhurst has superior atmosphere there’s just so much of Stormveil and it’s all awesome. Other than perhaps the big floppy tree worm making a return appearance I suppose, but even that hides a neat secret that blew my mind.

To my mind, almost every legacy dungeon justifies itself on second run, when burnout isn't a factor. The only one I think is shit is Mohg's domain. -GB

I’m 151 hours into my first playthrough, currently stuck on what’s supposedly the hardest boss in the game. Just giving myself an ultimatum by posting this to say I have roughly 43 weeks left to stay ahead of the podcast. I think I’m gonna need it…

Thought for a minute that Gary was making a One Piece reference (which I would never have expected)...and then realized he was referencing Don Flamenco from Punch Out 😂

Is this low key the peak of the game? Awesome build up with Margit. Fun exploration before it starts to feel rote. Perfect climax with Godrick. Firing on all cylinders here. Volcano Manor is a worthy contender but I was a bit burned out by then. Not so here.

With DS3 I did hate the punishing difficulty and didn't feel accomplished just because I beat the bosses…at first. It wasn’t until my second and third runs of the DS3 DLC (and 4th/5th runs of DS3 in general) that I ended up changing how I played in that game from my normal and actually started having an easy time with the endgame that I genuinely had fun with it. It’d be difficult to explain without spewing out paragraphs, but I genuinely have fun in that game by playing it how I think the game is meant to, rather than as a regular Souls game. It took me 4 and 5 runs to start to like the the game genuinely (not as a roll spammer or a master pvper or anything), but just from forcing myself to unlearn what I’d learned and adapt. I don’t view it as a battered spouse thing, it feels much more like learning a new martial art. I had to take myself back to a mental map of 0 and just rebuild my system understanding entirely and now I have fun with every part of that game’s campaign.

The tune in this castle always shakes me to my core. So sinister & foreboding. Never played original Demons Souls but it feels eerily reminiscent to the music I recall hearing in that game

Just wanted to say I'm enjoying the slow drip of the episodes you guys are doing, bought ER on release and only 40 hours in, takes me months/years to finish every Souls game., Are you guys recording chunks in advance or is it just a strict notes regime that allows you to talk after the fact? Love the podcast guys!

So I work with birds and loved the detail to the Storm Hawks. The swords on their feet and the helmets some of them wear are modified falconry equipment. You mentioned that you didn’t know the purpose of the helmets, they’re hoods that have been grafted to give them an extra ability. Very cool.

Josh Sanko

Grateful for the story notes in this season. I’m really struggling with lore discovery compared to the other games.

Billiam

Love this series. Wish I had the courage to have a podcast so I could wok my way into guesting on this show.
