Call and Response: WOFF Dispatch June 2022
Added 2022-06-18 15:19:47 +0000 UTCHello! The purpose of this post is to call for your questions and prompts for WOFF! Dispatch. Please respond by Monday, June 20 by leaving a comment on this post. (Apologies for the late notice this month).
We're looking for two kinds of things:
1. Suggestions for our long-form discussion prompt.
2. Q&A about the shows, behind the scenes details, and miscellaneous (including off-the-wall and off-topic questions). Ask us about games or other media, life in general... You name it.
One caveat we've given in the past: If the question is too personal or gross, we may dance around it and not give a direct answer.
We look forward to making this new kind of WOFF! episode together with you.

Hello from Alberta! Would you ever do a Bonfireside Chat top 5 weapons , or WOFF weapons dispatch? Which weapons do you usually come back to throughout the DS series, if any? What are your all time faves? #Claymore-is-Baemore. What weapons do you want to love but ultimately disappoint you (looking at you, Astora Straight Sword)? What odd personality quirks determine your preferences? (for eg: I'm oddly averse to weapons associated with enemies in the game, like lothric or black knight swords). Thanks!
Richard
2022-06-20 22:27:14 +0000 UTCHey gentlemen, in listening to the various shows you two do together, I'm very impressed with your ability not to talk over each other. When listening to other podcasts, radio shows, talk shows etc., it seems like this is a problem not all have been able to overcome. Have you two discussed this with each other as far as building a strategy to know when one person was finished speaking so that you don't speak over them? I do notice that you both use "mmm-hmm's" many times when having discussions, and I was always curious if this was your code for when you were telling the other you were looking for your turn to speak but wanted to make you weren't interrupting the other.

2022-06-20 21:42:45 +0000 UTCHey guys! What do you think of subscription services like Game Pass or Sony’s new thing? I like the idea of trying new games for a couple hours as they come out, but in practice I already have more than enough to play. Love all the shows, keep up the great work!

2022-06-20 19:57:01 +0000 UTCHowdy G/K: I saw that the Portland Retro Gaming Expo was on again this year -- do either of you have plans to attend that or possibly even do a show/panel?

2022-06-20 17:32:01 +0000 UTCHello Gary and the other one. In Total Recall, they implant false memories of vacations or trips to Mars, but what if you could implant memories of media? Everyone wants to read Gravity's Rainbow but no one actually wants to go through with it. With the implant you can talk about the book with all your smart friends. Better yet, Vampyr is taking too long for the show. Just implant the memory of the whole game and you're good to go! Is there any other pieces of media would you want rekalled?

2022-06-20 03:10:38 +0000 UTCYour Hulk: Ultimate Destruction episode reminded me of my experience with that game. First, it was the only video game that every physically hurt me. I was playing that near-endgame mission where you were chasing Abomination while pursued by the government and was holding down the jump button so hard that my finger was numb for hours afterwards. Nowadays I feel like that mechanic would be on a refresh every few seconds so you wouldn't need to hold down the button to charge it up. Also, it was my first introduction to the Devil Hulk. When I read the Immortal Hulk a few years ago, this game gave me context for what the character meant and its significance when they showed back up. In this game he was a force of devastation that promised to destroy the world, but in the comic he was recontextualized as Banner's view of what his father should have been, and only appeared monstrous at first because of Bruce's toxic relationship with his dad. Have you ever had a piece of tertiary media help introduce you to things and give you a good idea of how they worked before encountering them in the source material?

2022-06-19 09:32:19 +0000 UTCTabletop question: Hi Gary and Kole, sending good vibes and gratitude for all your hard work from West London. My question - I've heard you guys talk a lot about tabletop on your shows - mainly RPGs - but are there any board games you particularly love or play often? I've found board games to be a real lifeline through the past couple of years - from online Catan during the darkest days of lockdown, to games of Dune in our garden when outdoor meeting was allowed here in the UK, and now to big event games like Twilight Imperium, now that meeting indoors is permitted. Aside from the obvious social aspect, the aesthetics and tactility of board games really appeal to me, as does the fact that many games offer narratives and world building, but without the prep that's required for RPGs. Love to you and the cats!

2022-06-19 07:44:29 +0000 UTCNot exactly what you're looking for per se, but MandaloreGaming on YouTube covers a lot of older games and often very helpful in describing how to find, install, mod or improve games if you want to play the ones hes covering in each video. Idk if thatll help or if any of the games he plays are of interest to you but I thought it might be something you'd like to check out :)

2022-06-19 06:02:09 +0000 UTCHey Gents, with Control on the horizon, I remembered the game featured music from an in-universe band. I recently played through Guardians of the Galaxy which had an album’s worth of songs by fake 80s hair band Star Lord (where the character takes his name from in this version). I was just curious if you had any favorite in-game bands / songs. This would exclude things like Still Alive from Portal, since that’s not technically from a band within the game’s world. Thoughts?

2022-06-19 01:58:41 +0000 UTCHey guys! Where do you find playable versions of old games you cover for the show? As an old man who doesn’t trust anything he reads on the internet, sites like MyAbandonware that offer old games for free seem too good to be true. Do you have any specific sites or emulators that you find to be safe and reliable?

2022-06-18 23:54:21 +0000 UTCThe lead singer lead singer of a band I love died last year, which spelled the end for the act. It struck me just the other day that their work is "complete," for want of a better way to describe it. While Duckfeed is historically pro-death, are there particular pieces of art you feel are better, worse or just dramatically changed for having a definite end? I'm going to snipe Gary and bring up Bowie's discography - Blackstar did a lot to redefine his work to me, on top of being a hell of an album to go out on.

2022-06-18 23:36:09 +0000 UTCWhat do y'all think about nerd universes(i.e Warhammer, Star Trek, Star Wars, Forgotten Realms)as transmedia property in the video game space?? Which ones do you like the most?? Which ones are generally shit?? And which ones would you like to get more into??

2022-06-18 18:21:12 +0000 UTCI'm 46 now, and as I get older I'm finding true the same thing about gaming my parents said about rock and roll music in the 60's when they were teens -- popular media tends to be made for the teen and 20's market. Everywhere I go -- Twitch, YouTube, Discord, etc. -- gaming conversations and videos are dominated by young people with very different viewpoints, ideas, and thoughts then me. There is of course media out there made by and geared toward older people, but with each year it feels like I'm drifting more out of touch with the hobby of gaming. I still love gaming, but I wonder if gaming (like other forms of media) will always be dominated by young people, with retro gaming just for old farts. Have you guys noticed this yourself and have you felt that way as you get older, and overall what do you think about this issue?

2022-06-18 16:56:51 +0000 UTC4 important questions, 1. Which Pokémon do you want as a pet? 2. Which Pokémon do you want to cook and eat? 3 & 4. The same two above questions with D&D monsters

2022-06-18 16:15:57 +0000 UTCA bit random, but I've heard you guys mention "TV Tropes" numerous times throughout WOFF and Bonfireside Chat, and I often feel like there's some context I've missed. I have some familiarity with TV Tropes as a sort of wiki for literary tropes in various media, but your attitude towards TV Tropes seems to be one of mild derision. Not outright contempt or anything like that (after all, you both seem to have spent a bit of time reading off of TV Tropes). But it's appeared as the butt of the joke often enough that it just seems like there's something I'm missing. Maybe I'm just not in the right circles to know that that's the general sentiment about TV Tropes, but at any rate I was wondering if you might elaborate on your view on TV Tropes so I'll be "in" on any jokes about it in the future! Also, I should note that I'm not a huge TV Tropes defender or anything, so you're not going to hurt my feelings. I just literally feel like I'm missing some context. Thanks!

2022-06-18 15:54:59 +0000 UTCNow that you’re full time podcasters, do you find it harder to make sure you’re getting out and about in the world enough to refresh new life experiences and things to talk about? Compared to when you both were working standard jobs.

2022-06-18 15:51:56 +0000 UTCWorking off the response above me, what do you think the positive aspects of gaming can be for health in general. I was diagnosed with MS about ten years ago, and when I got over my fear of reading about the disease, a lot of articles talked about actions that build new neural pathways. And gaming being one of my favorite hobbies, it always seemed like video games are an action that requires neural network building with the response time and reactions. side question: guilty pleasures of books/movies/games/comics that you love but recognize are "bad" Thanks!

2022-06-18 15:49:39 +0000 UTCI just finished GRIS last week and thought “wow, that was a perfect game” - are there any games you consider perfect or near perfect in what they were trying to accomplish or artistically express?

2022-06-18 15:49:37 +0000 UTCTwo questions: Will there ever be another Duckfest? I am a mental health counselor in training and have been researching how gaming (everything from DnD to video games) can create positive mental health. You two talk a lot about mental illness, I am just curious if you have thought or stories about how gaming has helped your mental health in the past. Thank you!

2022-06-18 15:30:30 +0000 UTCAre you familiar with any gaming news/review sites that offer solid coverage on mobile games in particular? One of my go-to mobile games is ending in a few months and I'd like to find a site that does more than just announce the existence of games. One with a strong critical viewpoint would be even better. Alternatively (if that question was too off-topic), what gaming-related sites do you find yourself heading towards for critical reviews, and not just feature reviews?
