Bonfireside Chat 214: Liurnia of the Lakes, South

Having killed Godrick and taken his Great Rune, it's time to venture into the sunken basin of Liurnia of the Lakes. First we make a quick stop back to Roundtable Hold to get a glimpse at the Fingers, and then we hit the NPCs and dungeons of the southernmost ridges and reaches of the great swamp that acts as the cradle for the birthplace of Glintstone Sorcery.

About Fia being a hugging sex worker…..I think she is just a sex worker. But like with ….dead ppl lol. The intro shows her laying naked with a skeleton

about the spoiler wall: i know my comment feels pointless to add especially to a two year old episode about a two year old game, but im finally getting a chance to play this and i love using this podcast (ever since ds2 released) as a play along guide. usually after i feel like i’ve done everything i can with an area i listen to the episode after and somethings you guys talk about im like “woah i missed that!” or hearing parts of the lore that went over my head. if the rest of the elden ring episodes break the spoiler wall after this it’s totally cool, thanks for letting the listeners know, but whatever the next release fromsoft does and if BSC will do episodes on i would love it if you guys kept it area by area but that’s just me and i know you can’t please everyone. love the content regardless!

I have just started the game (took a while to get my PS5) and I'm enjoying learning a bit more about the world and the lore. Like, other that graftguy being awful, it seems like this is one of the more "hard to get int the lore until a little later than usual" games. And when I fired the show up when I started, hearing the opening stinger/ music warmed my cold, dead heart!

Thanks

Just recently started my first New Game Plus run, and got to Liurnia a couple days ago. This is one area (along with the Consecrated Snowfield and a couple others) which I didn't really explore fully. At the end of my first play through as I was cleaning up I discovered a number of spots I had just never seen, because I didn't go that way. But I thought I'd gotten through everything. Yesterday I discovered a cave on the very southern tip of Liurnia (down the cliffs, right at the bottom of the bog) - I think it was called Stillwater cave or something like that, it's full of poison enemies. I just love how this game holds so many surprises that you can think you went everywhere and then still end up finding new content. Yeah, at the end of the day it's yet another cave (and one might argue "yet another poison swamp" but I greatly prefer it to caves or dungeons I've already been through, because it retains that feeling of exploration and being unsure of what's around the corner. I try to visit everything / experience this game first without looking stuff up, and it's just generally been cool to see how much stuff is in the game.

I know this is an ancient episode now, but I have an alternate interpretation for why the Two Fingers seem to have legs in the Two Fingers Talisman: In the depiction of the talisman, they're on top of a set of stairs being worshiped by a bunch of hunched over finger readers below. The Two Fingers are backlit by a strong light source, casting a mirror shadow down the stairs. Personally I find this is a much more plausible interpretation than them having an additional two under-fingers that they presumably walked on. Nothing else in the game implies they had additional fingers or legs or anything like that. The reason they have readers is because they're stationary and all they do is wiggle to send messages. Also in terms of symbolism, it could be alluding to the darker aspects of the Two Fingers, and the general twin/mirror theming in the game. Publically, they are the loyal faithful representatives of the Erdtree, but privately they have *shadows* and assassins that they send out to do their dirty work.

"where you fight a tit with tentacles, and if you don't jerk off you win", you may think you're being intentionally absurd but that's more or less literally Monster Girl Quest in a sentence

Terra Parker

Yes to Santa. Worried that Kole sees a Havel weiner when 30% of From weapons have a knob based design &/or projectile attack.

Brad

One thing interesting about Thropps that you seemed to miss, his dialogue gives us the closest approximation of how far from the shattering we actually are time wise- he isn’t that old appearance wise and doesn’t seem to have any way to extend his life, so as he was locked out close to the beginning of the war it occurred well within living memory- probably a good few years ago given the stalemate we see but no more than a decade or 2.

Artalam

You know what, I'll take it. -GB

While I'm team Gary on Havel's weapon take, I'm full on team Kole on the fire Santas

DostThouEvenHoist

I see some Santa in the Fire Monk, but no one is more Santa than Merchant Kale.

Just to chime in about the spoiler wall, I pray with unyielding fervor that you maintain it as long as you possibly can. I'm a longtime supporter of the network, and huge fan of all the shows. I bought Elden Ring day one and have sunk a ton of time into it, only just now catching up with where the show is. Reason being that I had my first child in March, and free time for much of anything is a rarity. I'm finding windows to keep up with the show, but going further than that would be impossible. I only explain this to illustrate the many factors involved for those of us who haven't made it to the end just yet. And I'd love to keep listening every week :)

Patric Fallon

If you know the spawn spot for it you can step on it to start the spawning and start charging the spell right away and time it so you can stun them right at the start.

Maimikuba

Fair!

I beat the game at 250 hours. Granted I didn't look up stuff and explored every nook and cranny. To quote one of the finest philosophers of this age: "This game BIG!"

Andreas Hagen

I know about healing damaging the Revenants but the spell animation is to slow compared to the speed of the enemy and I am unable to make it land.

Mateusz Swietoslawski

Can you please try to describe talisman effects a bit more? Stuff like "this is Havel's ring" or "this is the same as the red ring" can be hard to follow. I know you don't want to re-describe Dark Souls over and over, but "it increases your equip load" only takes a second, and you don't need to go into any more detail than that. Option 2 is just say the game you're referencing. I can google to find out what "the red ring from ds2" did. If I google "the red ring" I get a film about lyme disease and then I start searching for a picture of a spirochete

Gwilym Wogan

I don't understand this at all, do you want them to read a wiki at you? This is just rude, man.

Rowan

I love the idea of Santa wearing armor.

I laughed out loud when I heard Gary say "Just beat the game!" as a parent, I feel as if I've put 100% of my free time into Elden Ring since it came out; and I've only just recently managed to get my 2nd Great Rune. Not complaining about the spoiler thing though; I'm not super spoiler sensitive with FROM games because I find the lore generally hard to decipher anyway. However I agree with @CharmedSatyr that ideally the podcast episodes would remain 'evergreen' for people playing through in the future. My first-ever experience with BonfireSide chat was playing through Dark Souls Remastered along with the podcast. I felt like it was well balanced in terms of talking about lore where it is appropriate (e.g. mentioning that The Channelers and their positions on the map are very important, but then only going into details later on when it makes sense.) I think this season does a good job as well, but hopefully it's understandable that beating Elden Ring is something many of us aspire to, ...but aren't quite there yet! Keep up the great work.

Dylan Smith

As Gary, let me add: Go fuck yourself, ya dork.

Duckfeed.tv

I just looked at the Two Fingers Heirloom and it looks a lot to me like a chromosome. Kinda interesting considering this game's themes about the yoke of lineage and upbringing.

Why you would steal something you insist is so terrible to listen to is beyond me. You’re free. Go. - K

Duckfeed.tv

Can’t give you money anymore. The “it’s not my fault I couldn’t figure out the NPC quest, it was a bug even though I am on my 3rd play through and have all knowledge on how to do it” is lazy shit. Gary dude, you are insufferable, how Kole keeps his cool is admirable. Every damn game that does not hold your hand and make you feel welcome is “wrong” to you. Kole call this little wiener out sometimes, he does it constantly to you! He will ramble on for 5 minutes about an anecdote that has no use or bearing on the subject at hand while pushing aside you trying to right-the-ship. Then laugh it off to himself. Both of you are not as funny as you think and get lazier as you go on. I’ll just steal your show from now on.

Pull-I-Am

I just hit 100 hours on my first file without having beaten the game!! (though tbf i always knock off about 20% of a play clock to adjust for farting around/being afk). At that mark i formally broke down my own personal spoiler wall, spoilers tend to entice me more than they upset me. And boy, gotta say, i have no fucking clue what the “right” way to do a spoiler wall would be in this game. Every major spoiler is either a huge revelation at the VERY end of a character’s arc, OR a massive shit bricks moment you would have realistically had to put together from lore videos and wikidiving. I do not envy you guys lol

Speaking of Vulgar Militia, my favorite item description comes from their ashes, which reads, "In the Lands Between, the small were scorned, and so they formed their vulgar militia as a means to make a living, albeit in ignominy." In other words they are Short Kings and didn't get the respect from Tarnished, so they became enormous assholes and made themselves into everyone's problem.

Jeremy

Loved the episode and this region, Liurnia is a gorgeous region with what feels like the most fleshed out and “GRRM” esque region lore wise when it comes to the Carian Royal Family and all their drama/plots. One theory about the Vulgar Militia, and this isn’t my original idea, is that they serve Malekith, I think in part due to the effects on their weapons and especially due to their locations leading up to two of the Black Blade Kindred. I don’t know how this really accounts for the ones seemingly located randomly, there’s a group in the route to the Haligtree I think you could argue are trying to accomplish one of Malekith’s goals. Perhaps the rest are either agents he has looking to accomplish that goal (somewhat spoilery so I won’t get into it), guard the routes to protect his interests/the Erdtree, or just random, unassociated groups. The consumption of the dead may be something that could align with Malekith as well, though I might be reaching pretty hard with that one.

Lucas West

Absolutely furious that no one referred to Rennala as Radogon's Eggs-wife.

Lewis Shaw

A bit of a random comment here, but since you spoke a bit about Malenia: It's many months in the future, but I'm already workshopping my contribution to the listener feedback section about my experience beating her summonless as a dex melee with Elden Ring being my first souls game. How to keep an account of that experience within a listener friendly length will be almost as challenging as the fight itself.

Andreas Hagen

You're absolutely right that not everyone has the specs to use a heal spell to deal with Revenants. BUT everyone can find and eventually craft Warming Stones which have the same effect. Saved my life a few times for sure!

Jean-Sébastien Côté

ah never mind I guess it’s just Adan

Is Adahn’s name a torment reference? I’m choosing to believe it’s a torment reference

Fantastic episode of the Joe Rogier Experience podcast featuring the Piss-Skin Duo. Rogier really had me thinking about how a tit with tentacles doesn’t really know any strength training routines, so we have never seen one at maximum strength.

Scottmichael Farrey

Keep up the good work. Been listening to you guys for years. 💖

Lowerlevelowlife

"Just beat the game man, it's been out for months." Gary, you realize how long this game is, right? I've been playing it since the day it was released and I only just beat it last week. Great episode lads! Liurnia is my favorite country in the game. Excited for your coverage.

ChipHand_Z

I was being a lil flippant, but it also speaks to a real difficulty of talking about something without being able to talk about all of it, especially when there are so many call forwards and backs. I do think it'll likely go away relatively soon, not as an afront, but just so we can fully talk about the game. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

A note about spoiler walls. I tried Dark Souls for the first time after Elden Ring came out and came across Bonfireside Chat when I was trying to learn more about DS1. I've since been playing through old games and listening to companion BSC episodes along the way. I'm up to DS3, where BSC had lots of mentions of the spoiler policy. Comments like "The game's been out for months! Beat it already!" (like in this episode) may make sense in the context of your production schedule, but I have loved feeling like my first playthrough experience was respected by your podcast in earlier games *years* after their initial release. Spoiler walls: appreciated! Your listeners might be time travelers.

Joseph

I believe it is the maps of this area that describe it as sinking into the earth. It could be glintstone as you said, but I am more of the believe that it has something to do with what’s a bit further below it.

Howard Quote

I have officially caught up on three years of bonfire side chat in the and a half months.

Eric Rugh

Elden Ring has dime-a-dozen incredible vistas, but the opening shot of Liurnia has to be #1 for me. Such a great thesis statement about the game after all that it takes you through in Limgrave. I thought the suggested scope of the view was complete lies at first, then remembered it’s a From game.
