Bonfireside Chat 215: Liurnia of the Lakes, Central

This week we head closer to the feet of the Academy of Raya Lucaria, getting our feet wet as we talk to folks like Rya and Blackguard Big Boggart. We also address the Albinaurics and tackle the town at the gate of the academy, getting the key we need for entry... but our quest will take us to the rest of Liurnia first.

Never put together the smog connection thanks for sharing! Loving this podcast, helps connect the dots for lore and gameplay mechanics.

50/50 the marionettes are related to rykard or just generally employed by places of sorcerers as additional muscle tho it's implied they ultimately originated with rykard since he's the one who we know created similar mechanisms (that run on magic snakes) in the form of the virgins

Funk Phunkerton

Both the handcreepers and marionette soldiers are made by rykard (same as virgins). So, of course all are found at Raya Lucaria and Volcano manor since he is partnered with Ranni. Finger creeper connection is proven by the finger hammer thing and seeing rykards finger in the cutscene don't be so quick to just say it's all meaningless 🙄

Funk Phunkerton

I’m really surprised they didn’t get that.

I think the proximity to our starting point, coupled with a nearby dev message is why I absolutely thought she was our maiden who somehow died. In episode 17 we find a dead maiden in the Church of Inhibition and assert that it is Vyke’s. And this seems plausible because the location where we find something is often (though granted not always) meaningful in Souls games. How these maidens died, though, is a subject for speculation. I assumed Vyke killed his maiden, though I don’t know if there is anything to support that assumption apart from the fact that she’s dead and he’s succumbed to madness. For all I know, we might have killed ours too; and wouldn’t that be a twist!

A bit late to this, but an idea I just had while revisiting this episode - the 2nd gen Albinaurics appear in that secret late game area because of Varre's work at the Rose Church. Imo, he's quite literally radicalizing them/converting them to Mohg's side. The Albinaurics are routinely mistreated by almost everyone, and you can see a procession of Albinaurics walking up into the Rose Church from the side. Considering what is known about the intelligence (or lack thereof) and the non-verbal nature of the 2nd gen Albinaurics it seems pretty likely they are easy to manipulate and turn to whatever side could use them. Plus, it's not like the Albinaurics are endeared to their creators

I think our hesitance in this is the lack of text about the mechanics of getting a maiden? Like, are you assigned a maiden when you get to the lands between? I never took "you are maidenless" to mean you once had a maiden and now don't, I just took it as "you don't have one." But there might be something I'm missing. Still learning about this big ass game. -GB

A question about the dead maiden, in whose blood you can stain the lord of blood’s favor in the Chapel of Anticipation. This is where you originally pick up the tarnished wizened finger, and I was surprised you guys didn’t mention that it seems she left a message for the player to become the Elden Lord; this suggests to me that this was *our* maiden. But who killed her? The grafted scion? Maybe Varre? ( I mean, it’s kinda weird that he knew we were maidenless at first meeting, right?) The hole in the ceiling near her is interesting; it harkens back to DS1. Maybe she pulled an Oscar and fell through the roof. What do you think?

Eric Fridrich

I believe that the most common consensus among lore videos is that he injects some of Mogh’s cursed blood into your finger.

Artalam

From the description of the finger item that you receive I always assumed that it was still attached to you. " Glistening blood has been siphoned into the nail of this finger. Its sickly pale skin feels nothing now, but the nail still aches with sweetest pain." Tickets to me that he did something to your finger sticking blood under your nail or something but he didn't remove it

Dani Doyle

Maybe I misunderstood or this will be brought up later, but there is a little more to Varré's quest. He, or someone like him, invades two or three times then you can find his duel sign on the ground. Once you beat him there you get his bouquet and some extra dialogue.

Brayton Cameron

It's certainly something I've been debating for a while with a friend so it was quite amusing to hear you guys having the same conversation 😊

Charlie Frame

Naw, you're right. It just threw me to have an inventory item that was attached to your body. -GB

Duckfeed.tv

The Finger Maiden is speaking directly about the Albinauric Village and the "big big pot" is a reference to where Albus is hiding himself (and the medallion) from Gideon Ofnir. My question is, why does Ofnir need to get to the Haligtree at all?

Charlie Frame

I believe Varré doesn't cut off your finger, rather injects it with Mohgwyn blood, essentially turning you into a Bloody Finger. Up until he does this, you're relying on other people's disposable severed fingers. However this one is reusable and still very much attached to you, since in the avatar we can't see a severed end

Charlie Frame

Yup same here

Charlie Frame

It's probably been mentioned but there is more to Varrés quest and it doesn't end when you get invaded by the three invaders in the blood lake. I fought him much later after killing Mohg (I think) in the tunnels leading up to his Palace.

Charlie Frame

I was thinking of "Nameless White Mask" -GB

Duckfeed.tv

I dont think this makes much of a difference but blood dude doesn't invade you, you invade him.

harrison Parker

Ahahah I love it all. I am always stoked to hear people go into the lore of this game. It’s been months and somehow there’s still so much to chew on by way of lore :o

Mateus Silva

So I’m not sure where in the text I saw this but the marionettes are creations of the academy and they sold they around, but given who the Lord of Magma Mansion is and who their mother is it really does make sense that Volcano Manor would have some of these as guards whether assigned or gifted from parent to child it really makes sense their presence here!

Mateus Silva

i ♥️ my 🍤 bro and my 🐍 sis !!!

sleepysmiles

This was fun. I found the 50 min lore dump at the beginning of the last episode to be a bit of a slog honestly. I've always preferred your personal playthrough anecdotes to the scholarly lore dumps. MUCH better fucked up wee dude to Big Important Noun Thing ratio on this one.

Rob

I was also going to mention how the art for all the other fingers shows a bloody stump, but this one does more of a fade out. Probably what Varre injected was some Blood of Hate that he filched from Vampyr.

Drew Weing

I think I was just thrown by having something that was part of my body be in my "inventory" -GB

Duckfeed.tv

like someone else said the "big pot" is referring to Albus most likely, and Miquella's Favor is probably referring to the haligtree secret medallion, which gideon slaughtered the village trying to find. basically the crone translates to "gideon killed everyone trying to find the medallion but he didnt check the pot lmao all yours i guess"

unluckychloe

The finger you get from varre doesn't have any amputation point while the standard normal fingers all very much do. Also the description talks about how it feels as well as the way it looks suggesting the finger is still attached.

Umair Khalid

Quick correction to prevent tweets, Varre injects your finger with something and curses it, as he is a battlefield medic, the description reads "Glistening blood has been siphoned into the nail of this finger. Its sickly pale skin feels nothing now, but the nail still aches with sweetest pain." Another great episode guys! :)

Josh

My only guess on the puppets being at Mt. Gelmir is that; as a son of Renalla; Rykard and his people have a lot of the same technology as the Academy.

Howard Quote

Three Varre look-alikes will invade separately if you wander around the blood swamp enough. But you’re right, if you want to kill Varre himself, you have to invade him right before Mogh.

Ryan Bennett

This episode got me to order some shrimp panang.

T

I think the Albinaurics are in Volcano Manor because they were being tortured and hunted by Rykard's inquisitors before it all fell to shit, and the ones at Mohg's are being mutated by the blood forcibly.

superkeaton

I never had Varre invade me in Mogh-zone, but was able to invade him and give him a pretty pitiful death which seems pretty good for his arc. I wonder what is different if he invades now.

Nick Sayers

The big pot is the one Albus was hiding in, if I had to make a guess.

Violet Sweet

Yes!
