Bonfireside Chat 218: Liurnia of the Lakes, Northeast

This week we head to northeastern Liurnia, to learn more about some of the elemental forces that stand athwart the Erdtree and its Golden Order. First we visit the Frenzied Village and its ominous tower to learn about Vyke's fall... Then we head to the Knifeprint Catacombs to uncover a little more information about the treachery that began the Shattering itself.

The games big. Forgot a lot. But my current play through…that Wraith trap is probably one of the coolest damn things I have ever seen/ experienced in video games. Scared the shit out of me too lol

Sure, but from everything we know, Ranni and Marika's goal's align and when confronted about the NIght of Black Knives she says: "Quite the sleuth, aren't we. Indeed, I am the witch Ranni. I stole a fragment of the Rune of Death, and used it to forge the godslaying black knives through fearsome rite. I did it all." She also claims to have "stole death long ago, and searches now for the dark path that she might one day upend the whole of it, and rid the world of all that came before" Ranni would know that she would need to split the rune of death if she only wanted to kill her body and someone else's soul would need to be sacrificed.

That's a good idea but I think canonically Godefroy created grafting and he was in the pre-times.

Duckfeed.tv

Thought I had while looking at the Malenia/Godrick stuff…did he start grafting after losing to her and possibly getting dismembered until he was an undying, demigod half torso and head?

JackelZXA

There's text about Marika employing the black knives, and about Ranni wanting destined death to kill her own corporeal form. I don't have it handy, but that's what we're basing it on.

Oh wait... Whoooaaaa

Yup. I admit I didn't fully understand what was being explained during that part of the podcast. But surely she intended to kill Godwyn. She killed his soul so that she could kill her body. I don't see how that's not intentional. PS - the other part I didn't understand was "Fia takes a snapshot of your character build". I know about Badalchin's Blessing etc but couldn't find more info

Took me a while to realise Rogier's tumour wasn't just a granny blanket with thorns growing from under it

Charlie Frame

As much as I love the guys, I feel like they are totally wrong when it comes to Rogier and Ranni. She almost certainly intended to kill Godwyn.

I'm with you guys, I love all of the frenzy stuff and I think it is a very compelling philosophy within the game and how it interacts with the systems of power in place. I know you'll get into it more later, but with frenzy being a sickness as much as a philosophy, it is really damning of the Golden Order how their exclusivity and strict code pushes people toward madness and seeing creation as a mistake. And Shabiri is so interesting. I agree that the story of Shabriri is a bit murky and feels a bit like propaganda, and I made a couple videos trying to untangle that. In the end I think Shabriri is so hated by the Golden Order because he used their prejudice against them to bring chaos the Lands Between, but I won't talk about the details now because that will come later.

I second and triple the recommendation for Prod! Been watching high his shit for years now. He has so many good ascended mod playthroughs of the earlier games as well.

I don't necessarily think that the places where the spoken echoes can be heard are where those words were spoken specifically. I also don't think all of those "speeches" were spoken directly to the people they are addressed to. Personally, that wouldn't make much sense to me based on how scathing and impersonal they feel in terms of their tone.

ChipHand_Z

It could also be Rennala after Radagon leaves and she doesn’t want to be a part of the Golden Order any longer, though I could easily also see it being Ranni. It could also be the Gloam Eyed Queen, though I don’t know if that would be as well tied to the location as Rennala or Ranni. I also like the idea that it might be Radagon, perhaps he was ordered back to the Capital, but didn’t want to necessarily leave Rennala. Radagon seems a bit more fanatical for the Golden Order, however, so I don’t really think he’s the most likely person who Marika is speaking to.

This is how I start my monday at work.

With regards to the Shabriri and merchants relationship, with Shabriri being held at fault for the flame and punished for slander I believe that it is possible that Shabriri slandered the merchant nomads, leading to what happened to them and hence the flame of frenzy coming to the lands between.

The NG+ smithing stone buying at roundtable hold has been patched in.

Eli Leslie

Ooooh that does have implications, and geographically that makes sense since it's a space that's semi-neutral between their two regions

Joe MacPhail

Prod is so good, I love his content

superkeaton

One thing I've been wondering about: who is Marika talking to at the Lift of Dectus? I feel like the only one that makes sense is Ranni, but that has some serious implications
