Unfilmable 41: Ready or Not

Weddings are stressful enough without your spouse's terrible family immediately trying to kill you. That's the situation that Grace finds herself in when she marries into the obscenely rich Le Domas family, who made their fortune in publishing board games. Whenever someone marries in, the family has a ritual where they draw a card and play whatever game is on it. Unfortunately for Grace, she winds up drawing "Hide and Seek", which is the one card whose consequences involve death.

This is an unusual pick for the show because it's mostly a tense action-comedy movie, but there's plenty of gore and supernatural spookiness to be had. And it's just plain fun.

I know you guys don't need recommendations, but you've expressed doubt on John Dies At The End before, the book at least. I highly suggest the movie. It's fun and funny, but also weirdly Lovecraftian. It's got great comedy horror vibes that I think you guys would enjoy, and I know it's streaming.

I think Happy Death Day would be a great fit for this show and a bit in that same vein as Ready or Not

Here's a pretty comprehensive list of films like that. https://www.npr.org/2022/07/26/1113195221/seeing-double-near-identical-films-that-came-out-at-the-same-time

Back in the summer of 1998 there were, coincidentally, two films about the earth facing meteor/comet crises, Armageddon and Deep Impact. Armageddon had a much bigger profile and is the more remembered movie, which is unfortunate for Deep Impact. A similar thing happened in 2006 with The Illusionist and the Prestige. It’s all just a quick way to say “one movie has to lose out when two very similar films are released right next to each other by coincidence”.

Curious what do you mean by "deep impacted"? Loved this movie, hadn't heard of it before but it is absolutely "Dani bait" ( feels designed for me specifically)

Hi Gary and Kole! I’ve loved listening to the backlog of these episodes after a long time enjoying BSC and WOFF, and this one was great! I remember seeing this in theaters and going through the arc of loving it, feeling pissed that it suddenly left horror for more action, and ultimately felt grateful for a horror-themed “Hunger Games.” These might already be on your radar, but the films “Underwater” and “Amulet” are favorites of mine that I’d enjoy hearing get your discussions. No pressure, thanks for keeping me company while I cook with these podcasts!

I really enjoy movies that are just good fun. I'm glad that you have episodes like this, and episodes for movies like The VVitch.

You guys could not put out an episode for 6 months and I would still sub, as I would assume some heavy shit was going down. So consider yourselves warned…6 months and no more.

BlindRiot

Really enjoyed this movie. I didn’t think about this until you both mentioned it. Stevens listening to the overture seems like an attempt for him to fit in with the upper class but the fact that it’s basically the first song that comes up if you Google “classical music” shows you he’s a poser.

Gonna check out Ready or Not this weekend but just here to once again let y’all know, the theme for Unfilmable slaps unnecessarily hard lol

I think You're Next is kind of like Ready or Not meets The Strangers, with a dash of The Hunt.

Francisco

I've heard that from a few people now. I'll have to check it out! -GB

You're next is what I thought all of these movies came from

Kay Francis

If you enjoyed this movie, You're Next has a lot of the same vibes and is also super fun.

Loved this movieafternoon but mainly came here to say "Fauxtho" WRT the dipshit who married into the family who does some good googling in this movie.

I saw this one in theaters when it came out. It flew under the radar but was a real gem of a horror film. Radio Silence did a short film for the first V/H/S called 10/31/98 is one of my favorites.

Mcav86

Really enjoyed this movie, thanks for the recommendation Gary! I went into it thinking it was the OTHER movie about hunting people that came out around the same time called The Hunt, and was pleasantly surprised.
