Bonfireside Chat 231: The Radahn Festival

This week we set our sights on the big guy himself, Radahn the Star Scourge, a general whose magic is so powerful that he has arrested the stars themselves. But we're not going to do it alone. Redmane Castle's festival is the first event of its kind, where a whole dungeon is changed for a specific encounter which is the crossroads for a few different quests. And the fight itself is a grand spectacle, iterating on Dark Souls II's Ivory King challenge.

So the story between sellen and selliivus is interconnected with this one somehow, if you give sellen the introduction from Sellivus it is another way to start the festival. There’s really a whole little story where you have to constantly bounce back and forth between Iji, Sellivus, and Blaidd who is underground in Siofra area.

I know you don't go through these old comments, most likely, but have you seen any of these? They are great! https://www.facebook.com/share/r/W23avkULDH9fiXvd/?mibextid=6GsUZ4

Whoa trippy to discover I’m not the only one whose old Mountain Goats catalog knowledge was activated upon picking up that “Collapsing Stars” spell. Love y’all for the niche content

Nick

I didn’t like radahn my first play through. I did it solo and couldn’t quite gel with his moveset. But when I did it rl1 solo, I had to learn it properly.. probably top three favourite bosses now. Ticks a lot of bosses (all of them..?)

I wish I could post a photo but I’m just now listening to this season for Elden Ring and a few months ago I took a photo of my husband pretending to ride our dog and said it reminded me of Radahn and I even made a side by side comparison photo haha.

It’s interesting that you guys interpreted Radahn’s participation in the Shattering as him choosing his mother over his father. I see it as the opposite. For 1, I believe it’s his helmet that talks about how he was proud of the heroic implications of his flowing red locks, but beyond that, he clearly idolizes Godfrey as you mentioned. I believe there were also some implications that he fought on behalf of the Golden Order in his younger years, though I can’t seem to find the citation for that atm, but of the 3 children of Radagon and Renalla, it seemed as though he was the one who took dad’s side, or at very least didn’t have much loyalty to his mum.

I still like rune farming in the War Dead Catacombs. Once that opening area clears out of knights, you can stand a little behind the second staircase landing and knights will appear one at a time with their backs to you so you can backstab and finish them off with one more hit. You can get about 14k runes before they stop spawning.

I hated this boss. I feel most "larger than life" fights are not executed as well as they could be, especially as one whom typically makes a close-range build. Unless they have truly breathtaking design or lore they're mostly forgotten. (Rom, Gaping Dragon, etc.) When I killed Radahn, the final boss, and similar large ones it never felt good to me. Killing Malenia, Artorias, or Lady Maria was intense and fulfilling. It felt like I had overcome adversity not squeaked by a win. When I beat these monstrosities it's "Thank God the bullshit is finally over."

Andrew O.

Maybe Iji made the red mane weaponry given Radahn was Carian and needed up to snuff weapons? And that’s what Jerren means?

Mateus Silva

This is correct. I’m 10+ playthroughs in, you only need to meet him at the fest and talk to him after the battle to progress his quest

Lucas West

Hey guys. So, at least in NG+, I didn't need to meet Alexander for him to show up to the festival

Charlie Frame

Pre patch 1.03 this was a wall for me. Then I beat him during the accidental over-nerf and it didn’t feel rewarding at all. I like the balance just now though, it’s just right in terms of justifying the spectacle, being rewarding but not being unfair.

Ken Douglas

I had a very good chuckle at the achewood reference, thank you for that!

MeltyHam

I’ve had the patience to learn how to beat every boss in all of the Souls games, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring, even if it took me hours or days for some of them, but if there was ever a boss that made me rage quit because it wasn’t even fun…no, it wasn’t Radahn. That battle was tremendous. It was one of the one-hit kill Laura fights from The Evil Within. Gary calling it a game about looking at loading screens was one of the most accurate and hilarious burials of a game that I’ve ever heard.

Scottmichael Farrey

Fuck yeah Gary, Rykard family for life!

been waiting for this one with bated breath since the season started. radahn fest is simultaneously incredibly morbid, exhilarating, and like the funniest thing on earth. he's like blaidd's brother and blaidd is just like "this is so sick". hysterical
