Bonfireside Chat 232: Roundtable Roundtable Caelid, ft. Iron Pineapple and Bryn

This week's Roundtable Roundtable has a slightly different format, because we are featuring two audio interviews with guests alongside your responses to the Caelid region of Elden Ring!

Our first guest needs almost no introduction. Iron Pineapple is a popular YouTuber who makes funny and insightful videos about From Software games. You've probably seen his videos about the glut of Soulsborne games on Steam, or his numerous and hilarious challenge runs.

Our second guest is Bryn, of the Generation Loss and Beep Beep Lettuce podcasts, and the band Stay Inside. Listen to her music and shows!

The next stretch of game we're covering is the remainder of Ranni's quest and Deeproot Depths, before we head up to the Altus Plateau.

The biggest issue with Elden Ring is just way too damn big lol

Robot McDonald's sounds like a prototype for Wesley Willis's Rock and Roll McDonald's

Brynn rocks. I guested on her podcast to talk about I Heart Huckabees and it was a grand ol time. https://soundcloud.com/generationlosspod/268-i-huckabees-2004-w-gary-butterfield

I know I’m late to the party, but just wanted to add that I loved Bryan’s guest appearance (and will have to check out her work). I like your efforts to add a little diversity to the guest rotations, but even more importantly, she just seemed to fit in really easily with the vibe you guys have built up over the past decade. Could easily imagine the three of you just goofin’ together. Would welcome more collaborations in the future!

Re: parts of a first playthrough seeming “part of a grand plan," I went into Radahn knowing about NPC summons so raced toward the first one, not knowing there would be so many. Galloping like a crazy person from summon to summon, I mostly failed to reach Radahn and somehow healed and double-jumped until he died, unsure if I ever landed a single hit (glad I was comfortable on Torrent, which made all the difference). I was scared to talk to Blaidd--would I even get "full credit"?—and his “What a sick way to fight, eh” made me cringe, haha. A win is a win, I guess?

Big fan of both interviews. Been a fan of Iron Pineapple for a while and was pleasantly surprised (though in retrospect I shouldn't have been) to hear you were all fans of Noah Caldwell-Gervais. His videos on the souls series are really something special. And a minor thing, you can count me among the group who did not know who Jessica was. I felt safe in assuming she was a pet of some sort but I'm glad you specified. On the subject of Malenia I'm inclined to agree that she did not willfully whip out the rot bloom solely to get the upper hand in a close fight. Both times that we see her bloom on the battlefield are when she is close to death. Once in the fight with Radahn as we saw in the trailer (and as alluded to by Cleanrot Knight Finlay's item description), and once in the player's fight with her at the Haligtree. Perhaps she is resisting the rot's influence as much as possible until circumstances force her to either tap into it by choice, or to lose control to the point that it takes advantage of the opportunity to propagate itself. The other evidence I see to support this is the change in her dialogue when she kills you between phase 1 and phase 2. In phase 1 she calls back with pride to her name and title - the same name and title that she makes sure to associate with her status of never knowing defeat when introducing herself before the fight. In that same introduction she looks back on her campaign in the Shattering (and likely Caelid specifically) as a dream where her blood was "rotted". In the transition cutscene and phase 2, however, her dialogue shifts. Instead of the somber recollection of her long dream and desire to see her brother she is now fully obsessed with killing you and giving you over to the rot. It appears her priorities have shifted as a result of the bloom.

I have to make something of myself to be important enough to get interviewed for this someday

Really enjoyed the guests! Iron Pineapple is in particular great. I will say, when it comes to ER replay value for me, that as magical as that first mostly blind playthrough was, I found it a bit frustrating especially towards the end of the game to go through a dungeon and get rewards that amount to usually meh amounts of runes compared to what I could be getting from some unfortunate Alburnaics. On my subsequent playthroughs, I just look at what the items are and skip reading anything more than maybe the location of a dungeon, so the experience is mostly fresh and I get a meaningful reward if the dungeon is a new one. That, plus the wide viable build variety, has made the game stay fresh for me after 10+ playthroughs.

We don't seek out folk who agree with us specifically. We just try to find folk who might be fun to talk to.

These round tables are really great! Curious if there’s an appetite for folks maybe you don’t 100% agree with. I promise I’m not a Joseph Campbell plant, but wonder if a debate about what was good and what wasn’t could be an interesting listen.

That video by Noah, is astounding. And it along with this show got me to get my gf to play DS1 she's having a great time and is already passed the Capra Demon!!

I was convinced it would end at the erdtree, personally. -GB

Everyone always brings up how the game keeps expanding out bigger than you expected. This definitely happened to me. I remember getting warped early on to the Dragonbarrow in front of Gurranq's doghouse and thinking it was the final area in the game. Boy was I pleasantly surprised.

I'm salty about The Sub Terranian Shunning Grounds! -GB

Third recommendation for Noah Caldwell-Gervais, with my favorite video of his being about games in the Western Genre (Red Dead/GUN). Also, far and away the best writing that has ever been done about Gears of War.

I propose "Noseborne" as a nickname for the Pinnochio game. Great episode!
