Bonfireside Chat 233: Nokron, Eternal City

At long last, we can continue with Ranni's work now that the stars have moved again... and punched a big ol' hole in Limgrave. Big enough that we can get into the previously inaccessible Eternal City of Nokron. Here, we seek out the blasphemous treasure of the Nox, and see a little bit of the mad science they were doing in order to supplant the Golden Order.

Don't know if this has changed with patches, but the swordstress walking the mimic tear seems coded not to drop any of her equipment. Since the drop rates are so abysmal, it took a *while* to confirm that.

On Numen : I study ancient Rome a lot and the word was used in the early part of the Empire in some surviving texts. there it meant "divine power" or "nod". Ovid used the term in his work. It would indicate divine in natural or man made things. Before their religion developed anthropomorphic ideas of Gods, they would find the divine in for example a boundary marker, which to them would contain a divine power in it. Ovid uses the word referencing Terminus, which was a god of boundaries. There was also a mythical King Numa who is not known to have truly existed but was the successor to Romulus, the founder of Rome. He is supposed to have done a lot to add to the early religion.

There is cut content and asset names in the Nokron and Nokstella that heavily imply the Nox are descendants of Marika (or have a common ancestor at the very least), and that imply Marika is from one of the eternal cities as well. I believe there’s some in-game lore that supports this as well. Your point about the Nox being Nightfolk also makes a lot of sense since Nox literally means Night in Latin, and since the Nightfolk starting class looks very similar to the Nox warriors we see in game. But yeah, I would agree that the Nox people aren’t Numen, but rather distant descendants of Numen instead. The piece of lore you’re referring to is about the Black Knife Assassins, who reportedly are Numen and have ties to Marika and the Eternal City. That doesn’t necessarily make the Nox people Numen by extension though.

The Mimic Tear arena features one of my favorite messages in the game: "weak foe, therefore time for introspection."

I found it odd they added a red marker to the crater because I was able to see it even from Altus Plateau!

I've never really bought into the idea of the Nox being Numen. As far as I know the only reason people think that, is because one piece of lore says they are Numan beholden to Marika and another completely separate piece of lore says they are Nox. I don't think both of these statements are true. However, I am interested in the connection between the Nox and the Nightfolk. There is a definite implied connection between the two, I'm just not sure what it is. Maybe the Nightfolk are mimics who became real somehow?

One of, if not my favorite spots in the game. HUGE areas to explores, often ended up in hidden places I should've been but finding treasure...as if Fromsoft knew lol

“I don’t want to interfere with the efforts of the first responders” had me rolling 😂

This place was dark and the music was atmospheric.
