Bonfireside Chat 234: Night's Sacred Ground

This week we venture further into Nokron, the underground exile of the Nox people, who perfected a weapon to kill a god. This involves some detours through Ancestral Worshippers, and a brush with a strange levitating coffin, before we reach the Sacred Ground itself, overtaken by Silver Tears.

Idk why anyone loves the nasty tree dudes, but I had to fight the first one so many times as I went in early that I can basically slaughter all of them on the first try now lol. So I definitely don’t have an issue with them

I'm a bit obsessed with these death-seeking mimic tears. If I stay on the ledge where we first see them, before jumping to the dome, the archer won't even necessarily shoot anything--one time it walked in a circle while I watched before its steady path off the ledge

Tarnisha

Yes! I saw only the archer do it, but it happened every time (at first I thought it did a jumping attack that led to accidental death, but, no, it just walks off the edge--maybe after its arrows are depleted?). Not sure I would have noticed the first time except that my rune count suddenly was +2000

Tarnisha

Hourah Loux Defence Squad checking in. Love that guy and his dead front half of a lion.

Cory Killjoy

This was fun for me because Valiant Gargoyles is consistently one of my stopping points, it’s just so difficult for me when the second enters; while the non boss mimic tears have never been a problem for me

Nat Isnice

That's what I'm thinking. Differing opinions always make for a more interesting conversation.

Justin Schnute

seconding ratatoskr. hes got some different opinions than the fellas here but hes v passionate ab the games

faith rasmusen

For me the two mimic tears you jump down on that roof to fight would run off the roof to their death as soon as I aggrod them with ranged attacks. It made me laugh every time. Not sure if that got tweaked or i was doing something special

Drew

A bit of a fun note that I’m not sure is still doable, but that’s worked for me a few times with the sword Crucible Knight in the aqueduct. When he enters phase two and starts to do the flyby attack, I managed to unintentionally line him up with the opening in the building with arches, so he flew past me and clear off the ledge to his death. I don’t mind the Crucible Knights too much at this point even without parrying, but on my first playthrough being able to unintentionally trick the AI was a welcome relief

100% agree that the gargoyles are just a shitty version of the Demon Prince, which is my favorite gank in the series. To be fair, they are made significantly easier coming to them well leveled and using ranged magic to steer clear of the poison. They definitely aren’t well tuned for the area, IMO they’re tougher than the Deeproot bosses by a considerable margin.

Lucas West

The ulcerated tree spirits were always a fav of mine too but I credit that to being a strength frenzy build

Mateus Silva

Quelagg and The Tarnished Archaeologist would also both be great choices imo. They're both very knowledgeable and seem like fun people.

ChipHand_Z

Yeah, I was in the opposite boat as Gary and Kole, I got there from Siofra and had no idea that you could get down there from Nokron

Ryan Bennett

I also liked fighting the Ulcerated Tree Spirits! I was playing a quality build with a focus on greatbows and halberds. When I found them out in the wild I would fill them with greatarrows then pop the commander's standard rally and charge them with Torrent. Something about playing that way made me go "Im here for this!"

T

You can 100% access the Dragonkin Soldier from Siofra. There's a waygate on top of some broken pillars you can climb up somewhere around that lightning-orb infested lake area.

Jean-Sébastien Côté

I'm sure you already have all the guests figured out, but in case you're not I had a few suggestions if that's ok. Raditoskr on YouTube is a great lorester, and I think he would add a lot to the podcast. I've also really been enjoying Miss Chalis. She really sweet and also has some great takes on the lore. It would be really cool to hear from either of them.

Justin Schnute

Same here, that fight seemed like a less well-tuned version of the Demon Prince from DSIII. Lots of situations where they were both aggro simultaneously. I do think they patched the duo bosses to make it less likely that they will both go aggro at the same time since I last played this though.

Ryan Bennett

Great episode! You guys are the first people I’ve heard describe the Gargoyle boss fight in Nokron as easy. That fight was my Vietnam, and made Radahn (who I had just fought before) look like a walk in the park by comparison. Easily the hardest iteration of the Gargoyle Duo we’ve seen in a From game imo (mostly because of that poison breath).

ChipHand_Z

"you're not going to listen shearwater to get pumped up" hard disagree, when the song Animal Life gets going it fucking bangs

The Narcissist Cookbook

Thank you for posting so early in the day :)
