Bonfireside Chat 226: Caleid, South

This week we continue our journey along the Caelid Highway, down further into the wilds of the rot-blighted land. Starting at the Smouldering Wall, we venture into Fort Gael and the prison complex beneath it, before reaching the swamps and dragons of the southern reaches.

Next week we will turn northward into Selia and the Aeonian Swamp, ground zero of Malenia's blossoming.

The “Gale gaol” joke made me laugh, I love a fun reference to Breaking Bad in the Elden Ring podcast

Just wanted to note! On the rot follower pests and things changing with development. The underground Temple to the Goddess of Rot that changed in development. You mentioned it changed from ancestral followers to the pests, and it maybe wasn’t always a Rot Temple. We know this because the ancestral followers in that area were a unique enemy that is no longer in the game. They were physical not spirit followers, and they were rot-stricken ancestral followers with sores and wounds from the scarlet rot. It definitely would be a different implication than the pests, but nevertheless part of me wishes the faction of Rot Followers remained in the game. What a reveal.

Hey Guys, one thing I will say about the ancestral followers/rot thing is that, the item descriptions of ancestral follower related items and Gowry’s description of the nature of rot do share thematic similarities- both seem to worship the idea of life growing from death and the cycle of life and death.

The mention of the unhatching egg and Saint Trina (sleepy Goddess) made my synapses draw the parallel to Filianore from the Dark Souls 3 Ringed City DLC. I've certainly encountered a nonzero number of theories of elden ring being a progenitor of the other soulsborne games that is not something I subscribe to, but is occasionally fun sandbox space to brainstorm in.
