Bonfireside Chat 227: Sellia, Town of Sorcery

Sellia is a town in Caelid that holds many secrets, sealed away behind an impenetrable puzzle that involves lighting three torches. A strange sage named Gowry acts as our guide, sending us to the Aeonian Swamp to recover a cosmic artifact before directing us to the heart of Selia to learn where these people came from, and why the Golden Order had turned a vicious eye toward them in the past.

Coming to this one late, but: the Nox bosses are not behind the seal! They're just a little further down the edge of the swamp. The first time I stumbled into Sellia from arriving through the mine trap, I tried fighting them long before I opened the seal, which just leads to the backstreets and the upper plateau.

my first couple hours in Caelid were mostly spent going “ah SHIT what the FUCK IS THAT this place SUCKS” and stumbling away directly into some other fucked up thing, rinse, repeat. Sellia was a really memorable part of that experience because after escaping from giant monster crows and tanks shaped like horrible faces, i got a momentary breather in this creepy looking, seemingly empty town, and right in the middle of exploring it a bunch of ghostly mages surround me out of fucking nowhere. i laughed but also i kind of screamed

I feel like you guys hit your stride in this episode. Removing the spoiler wall has let conversation flow more naturally. Glad you waited until now to cover one of my favorite areas in the game.

The commander's standard was my main weapon in my first playthrough. Love the buff skill and it looks so cool!

You definitely want to stagger her if you can and rock sling fits that bill the entire game

I could see a case being made for O’Neil being an ally of Malenia, though the item description of the Commander’s Standard talks about a fleeing lord, usually a male title and likely Radahn, though it could refer to Miquella or another unnamed lord. Niall, the other Commander, is the de facto leader of Castle Sol, which seems allied with Miquella and the Haligtree, while not being made up of Miquella/Malenia’s personal forces. I think there’s likely some kind of relation, even if not familial, between Niall and O’Neil, since both utilize similar ghostly exile/banished summons. I find the peaceful and close proximity of so many Cleanrots to O’Neil to be another possible indication of O’Neil’s allegiance. If the catacombs by Radahn’s arena are to be an example, the forces of Radahn and Malenia still hold extreme animosity for one another. I wouldn’t expect the Cleanrots would be too pleased to learn that one of their enemies was just wandering meters away from them for however many years it’s been since the battle between Radahn and Malenia. Either should have killed the other, there should be no Cleanrots in close proximity or O’Neil should be already dead, not both. I don’t have a definitive answer, and it could be that O’Neil served Radahn, Miquella, the now-dead lord of Castle Sol, or some other unknown lord. I think in particular it’s just worth pointing out the only other in-game Commander like O’Neil is allied with Miquella specifically, and guards the second half of the Haligtree medallion.

I like Sellia’s flavor as this magic town, but like the town you access the Haligtree, I’m just not a fan of when this game demands platforming precision. Like, I appreciate the ability to jump and how it opens up exploration and combat, but Mario Galaxy this is not. I’m just glad there aren’t more jumping puzzles than there already are.

That's what I think, whether it's a literal budding off Malenia or the still mystical "they rose from the scarlet rot which is only here because of Malenia,", which in that mystical, metaphorical way I would say is still accurate if slightly less literally biological. My preference is the more biological budding

Stephen Swartz

Regarding the Millicent’s parentage discussion, while I agree you are probably correct about it being purely mystical, there’s something delightfully horrifying about the idea that when Malenaia bloomed, similar to a flower, she budded off Millicent and her sisters.

I missed this area almost completely

I did my first run of Elden Ring with zero guide/wiki as a pure sorcerer and wish I had found that staff and spell a lot sooner than I did. But as a testament to the rock sling spell it's what I used to beat Malenia, I don't know if it was optimal for a sorcerer but the stagger seemed effective in my fight
