Bonfireside Chat 228: Millicent and Greyoll's Dragonbarrow

Edit: There was a problem with the first version of this that is fixed now. If you hear overlapping audio at the start you can delete and re-download. I apologize for the error! - K

This week we pick up on the road above Sellia, to the cliffs above to save the poor girl Millicent at the behest of the strange sage Gowry. Then, we proceed northward beyond the giant skull to Greyoll's Dragonbarrow, a slightly less-blighted portion of Caelid, which is now a sanctuary for the remannts of Dragonkind in the Lands Between.

Didn’t Gowry say the pests were specifically defending and caring for milicent? Then when you actually get there…they really are just straight up standing guard. The game seems to intentionally put in lore communicating animations when it comes to the churches. Like the blood one doesn’t only have the blood dude, but outside has 3 gen 2 albo’s standing and staring at the church in a trance. Who then also end up in the land of blood underground

I disagree with y’all’s take on Millicent. I don’t think Gowry is being totally forthright when he says that he plucked her as a babe from the swamp. I think that Melania, during her fight with Radahn, knew she needed to blossom but couldn’t out of pride or sheer will. In order to bloom, Melania had to “shed” those parts of herself, creating Millicent. “There is something I must return to Malenia. The will that was once her own. The dignity, the sense of self, that allowed her to resist the call of the Scarlet Rot. The pride she abandoned to meet Radahn’s measure.” That last part specifically makes me believe this. She had to shed that part of herself in order to be Radahn’s equal.

Minor lore point. There seem to be two sorts of dragon cult in the lore. The dragon heart eaters associated with the Temple and Cathedrals, and the dragon cult associated with Leyndell. The Leyndell cult seems to be tied to the ANCIENT dragons, who do not drop hearts, and it's more of a worshipful thing that is focused on ancient dragon lightning. Lansseax's Glaive's item description says the following: "Lansseax was the sister of Fortissax. It is said that she took the form of a human to commune with the knights as a priestess of the ancient dragon cult." So there appears to have been some good ol' dragon fucking going on too. Living their best lives! I bring this up not only because of the dragon fucking, but because the confusion between the two turbo fucked my first build in this game. Dragon Communion Incantations are associated with the arcane stat, and you get them from Dragon Hearts. Dragon Cult Incantations are associated with the faith stat and DO NOT SCALE with the Dragon Communion Seal, despite both of them nominally being "incantations" that have to do with "dragons." The Dragon Cult Incantations scale with the Gravel Stone Seal, so you need to spec completely differently for one or the other type of dragon incantation. Me, a fool, tried to spec for both, and since I did the Dragon Communion spells first in the early game, I ended up having to respec to focus solely on those and end up as a sad boi Magma Wyrm Elden Lord. After all, I had dumped all my upgrade materials into the Dragon Communion seal! At first, this really pissed me off, and seemed like bad design. Why aren't the mechanical differences made clearer from the get go? But eventually I learned that the normal Dragons are the sad, weak, descendants of the Ancient Dragons, in a classic example of fantasy genre "thinning" of magic. It seems completely in keeping with the game's overall themes that my character fucked around with dragon powers she didn't understand and found out when she got turned into a monstrosity even more pathetic than the later generation Dragons she killed. She could have been a dragon fucker, but she ended up just getting fucked, like so many inhabitants of the Lands Between seeking power.

You missed the chance to make a great joke about why there is no sun when speaking about Len…everyone know Len steals your sunshine lol

I also like the jar warrior pvp mechanic, but the lack of an old monk/mirror knight/spear of the church boss fight in this game still makes me a little sad. To compensate, I've invaded a few players near open world bosses so I can "team up" with the boss. The Windmill Village Godskin Apostle is my favorite dance partner so far.

I think assuming Millicent isn’t actually directly related to Malenia is a bit presumptuous for a few reasons. I understand not all uses of the terms “mother” and “father” require specific blood relation, but more than one character specifically refer to her as Malenia’s daughter (including Millicent herself), and I don’t see any reason not to take that at face value. The more concrete evidence is Millicent’s red hair, which we know for a fact is a trait associated specifically with Radagon and his offspring. Her having that I would say more or less confirms a blood relation between her and Malenia. That doesn’t necessarily mean she had a traditional “birth” or even necessarily a father, but it’s also worth noting that just because we never hear about a father doesn’t mean there wasn’t one. We don’t know who Godrick’s mother was, but it’s still fair to presume he had one.

fun fact, the greyoll yell spell is actually *extremely* strong! the description doesnt mention anything except the debuff, but it also does a big high-knockback high-damage invisible AOE. one of my playthrus is dragon-themed and it basically carried my whole playthru, its definitely on the long list of spells that are really good in ways the game doesnt communicate, similar to enemies not dodging the night comet sorceries or gary's example of the mist that goes thru walls and doesnt activate aggro. doing weird gimmick runs is so fun because so many of the tools have these hidden layered mechanics that really reward experimenting. great episode!

I *loved* Gary’s TMBG reference at the opening of this episode!!
