Bonfireside Chat 229: Bestial Sanctum and the Divine Tower of Caelid

With all of the Scarlet Rot in Caelid, it's easy to overlook the other forces at play in the region. Namely, the Black Flame, Deathroot, and other forces associated with the Destined Death. In this cleanup episode, we head to the Bestial Sanctum to learn about Gurranq the Bestial Clergyman, and then we head to the Divine Tower of Caelid where we find the Godskin cult tucked away in the basement.

Next week we head to Redmane Castle to begin working to handle Starscourge Radahn himself.

The motive behind Ranni is fairly clear to me. Godwyn was in line take over the golden order. Ranni no like golden order. Ranni need to kill someone. Why not the leader of the golden order whose death also weakens golden order because it turns Marika against it and shatters the Elden Ring.

Certainly nothing but a rough chuckle intended. I am enraged by Flint. -GB

Maybe I'm being a parody of myself (stealing a phrase that y'all use all the time) but it makes me a little uncomfortable to hear you make off-handed jokes about the racially motivated water crisis in Flint Michigan. I understand that we all sometimes have thoughts that just pop up and we can't control but the cavalier tone in which you made it and then commented on it felt inappropriate to me.

i dont think the games are literally connected but i think its hard to argue that they dont share symbolism. if you're interested in that kind of analysis you should look up the youtuber Quelaag, she's been doing some amazing elden ring videos that focus on the underlying visual themes and how they connect to real-world history, art movements, and cultural contexts outside of the western gamer bubble

You definitely didn't do anything wrong by writing it in at the time! We appreciate your insight!

I replied further down to this, but I realized “Lord” is generally used without regard to gender with regards to the “Elden Lord.” However, the title “Lady” is also used with regards to Nepheli and Tanith (if not more people) so really the case could be argued either way. As was covered, I think Miquella being lord is pretty unlikely myself, since there’s a chance that’s why Malenia went to Caelid at all. I think the most likely known contenders of who O’Neil served remain Malenia, Radahn, and the lord of Castle Sol

SmoughTown is definitely the lore watering hole, even if I don’t agree with all his theories I have to respect that he reads item descriptions right there, and doesn’t try to pass off his theories as a matter of fact

Lucas West

I appreciate you reading my comment on the show! O’Neil still seems inconclusive to me overall on who they served, but I figured it was somewhat in the air as to who they served. I did realize that the term “lord” is used without regard to gender when it comes to being “Elden Lord,” though the title of “Lady” is also used with regards to the end of Nepheli’s quest and Tanith. Interesting stuff, but nothing conclusive as far as I can find in determining O’Neil’s loyalty. I will try and hold off on my lore thoughts for the responses episode, since then you don’t have to go digging through all of the past episodes as much, but I could talk about the lore of this game for hours and hours and paragraphs on paragraphs, and I wouldn’t want to leave an essay response covering a variety of topics come the response episode. In all honesty, I wasn’t necessarily expecting any of my longer messages to get read on an episode just given how lengthy they can be, more so that I wanted to leave a little relevant lore nugget to that specific episode. If I have anything I feel is unique, I’ll go ahead and explore it! I feel with regards to the talk of Ranni, Malekith, the Godskins, and Radahn in recent episodes there is a lot of potential material.

Lucas West

And after listening to the BSC for Dark souls 3. Y’all talked a lot about the hollows turning into trees. I just want to know why we are ruling out that these games are connected.

Coleman

Yo can anyone tell me why sites of grace look exactly like a humanity sprite from dark souls 1?

Coleman

SmoughTown did a YouTube video suggesting that the Bestial Sanctum was once part of Farum Azula before it was torn away from the lands between. He makes a pretty compelling case, showing that whole under area behind the Sanctum being the space where the city used to be.

Bryant Ross

With Blaid he will only stay dead after Ranni’s connection to the fingers is severed. With Malekith, killing him in Faram Azura is harder to explain, it could be justified that it’s due to unleashing death or that you are expected to finish the game before he would return. The game definitely says that shadows cannot be permanently killed though- here’s a YouTube vid showing someone doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ELdjQA1zMw

Artalam

You later kill him though, right?

Duckfeed.tv

Kole, how are you gonna tease us with the fact that you have two cats with old lady names and then not tell us their names?

Cody Russell

Also I for one would love more platforming dungeons in elden ring

Mateus Silva

So why does society hate Grafting so much? But jars and more specifically, Gargoyles are okay??

Mateus Silva

Love the divine tower of Caelid, it was my first divine tower so I was unfortunately slightly let down by every other one because of how much I enjoyed this. I was way under leveled and had to come back to beat the boss but it was so fun.

Mateus Silva

With regards to killing Malekith early and him still appearing, this isn’t time related- if you kill Blaid early in his quest he says “you cannot kill a shadow” and respawns a short time later. It seems that, while in service, the shadows of empyrean cannot stay dead.

Artalam

Black blade kindred by the Bestial Sanctum is the only Elden Ring boss I haven’t beat without cheesing. He’s a nightmare.

Ryan Bennett

Divine Tower of Caelid = vertigo!

Brad Leissa

personally I believe the “fleeing lord” refers to Malenia as Finlay escaped with her back to the Haligtree. can’t explain the lord/masc though!

Lynk Jonesy

shouts out to the Divine Tower of Caelid, my first grind spot!
