Bonfireside Chat 230: Redmane Castle

Our quest to defeat Starscourge Radan is near its end as we storm his stronghold, Redmane Castle. This legacy dungeon is quite strange, and not just in the context of Elden Ring. There are two versions of it, one that is full of enemies, and another that is empty and ready for the Festival to kill the rot-blighted demigod. FromSoft have never done anything like this, and while it's not entirely successful, it's still really neat.

Because there's relatively little to talk about in Redmane itself, and because the Festival is getting its own episode next Sunday, we round out this week's episode by talking about what's changed in Elden Ring through patches and updates, and what it means to dive deep on a game that is both huge, and a moving target.

As someone who refused to beat that first crucible knight without making it all parrying because I knew I would need that skill for them the whole game……they are still absolutely dreadful

Second playthrough to hit up the dlc. So butthurt giving sellen the intro started off the festival and completely destroyed all my other quests lol

Do the stars not move at all canonically or are they simply held from falling in the fashion that we see in the post-Radahn cutscene? I got the sense not necessarily that the entire motion of the stars was stopped, but rather their falling upon the Lands Between and creating their havoc was halted. Could be wrong but just a thought!

My first playthrough I never actually experienced Redmane outside of the festival. This was frustrating as I missed out on the red-hot whetblade which would have been great to have as a faith build who loved fire! A partial shame on me for not coming back but it felt kinda pointless after defeating Radahn. Long story short I wish such a key item was not placed in a location with multiple instances.

On the topic of quality of life updates, I would love if they added a way to keep the time of day the same when you die. It would make hunting down time-specific field bosses less of a hassle. I die to Death Rite Birds a lot; I'd love if I didn't have to sit through multiple loading screens every time I fail to beat one. In the end though that's a very small gripe in the grand scheme of things and I wouldn't be offended if it never got patched in.
