Bonfireside Chat 242: Altus Arrival

With Ranni's quest behind us, we venture into the next chapter of the game as we head up the Coward's Path to reach the Altus Plateau. Whatever one might have expected of the land at the foot of the Erdtree, it's unlikely they were imagining a war-torn, fallow, eternal autumn. We talk about the paths up to Altus, and the little sub-plateau where the perfumers and a certain familiar Sage perform their rites.

in Zelda 1, if you play Second Quest, there are mandatory illusory walls. they’re similar to bomb walls in dungeons except you can’t use a bomb on them. instead, you just have Link walk into the wall for a few seconds until he phases through the wall and the secret jingle plays. blew my mind to see. I wonder if there’s anything older than Zelda that has done that

The Magma Wyrm scaled Greatsword is a fantastic weapon. One of my primary early-mid game weapons for my initial play through, a strength faith build. The sword has fantastic scaling for faith and strength, does physical and fire damage, and Magma Guillotine is a very powerful skill against both bosses and humanoid enemies.

Those octopi can jump pretty high. I had one jump up and try to smack me while I was talking to Patches in Liurnia.

The show finally reached this great area. Some of my favorite set pieces are on Altus and Mt. Gelmer. I’m looking forward to hearing you guys talk about them.

The Astral Hobo

The Altus area gave me a feeling of a season change. So breathtaking, I just enjoyed looking and taking it all in. I found myself losing to Magma worm a couple of times. I was weak, too🔥. After overcoming that wall, I had to fight uphill the Omens and another dragon fight. likely some told me to skip it because it's runs alway if you try and fight it. O man, I had that same Skeletor figure, too. I would poke it all the time.

The first time I heard the Siren’s Song from one of those Harpies was actually in the Weeping Peninsula. There’s one camping out right behind the Minor Erdtree over there, but it’s very well hidden, so I actually thought that Latin song they sing was just diegetic music that plays when you approach ancient places of great importance. It might be my favorite accidental set piece in the game.

I stumbled through the coward’s path pretty early so that was the first siren I ran into. Super memorable moment, very haunting and unexpected. Definitely glad that was my first exposure because it’s such a well-designed encounter that loses a lot of its impact when you know how common those guys are.

So you guys keep saying that the Falling Star Beasts are just minding their own business and aren’t a particularly malevolent force, but given what we learn about Astel, I don’t really buy into that interpretation. Whether you believe Astel came down on Radahn’s meteor or not, we know that he destroyed an Eternal City (most likely the Nameless one) and stole their false night sky. That doesn’t seem like the action of a beast that’s just “minding its own business” as you have postulated.

Blackguard and Millicent are presumably there to be summoned for a narrative reason; namely that they both took the same path through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice as you to Altus. Neither of their summons are there if you haven’t advanced their quests. Millicent’s case is particularly clear - her summon sign won’t show up until you have the specific conversation at Gowry’s shack where she says she’s bailing on Caelid. Blackguard I’m pretty sure you have to buy prawns from him otherwise he’ll just chill down in the lake.

Magma wyrm sword is one of the best weapons for strength/faith builds.

Everytime I hear the term, "Fringefolk", I autocomplete it with "Festival". Ironically, the closest thing to a gathering of hippies is on the platrau.

I think the capital is my favourite area so I can’t wait for you guys to hit it! It’s also huge so I’ll be interested in seeing how you guys tackle it 😁
