Adaptation Decay 70: Pokemon: 2.B.A. Master

Pokemon is just a fact of life now, but there was a time when it was new and interesting and music from an anime about capturing fucked up little guys could sell millions of copies. That's what happened with 1999's "2.B.A. Master", which featured some music created for the Pokemon anime's US run, alongside some of the most dreadful and bland praise band music and Bobby Hill rap you've ever heard. But sprinkled throughout are enough boppy little jingles and hooks that make perfect sense when you realize the songs were written by jingle musicians.

hugely fond memories of listening to the second album as a kid

oh my god i remember owning this too. can confirm that about half the songs did nothing for me (that misty song, barf). i didnt notice the incredible praise brand/coffee jingle energy at the time but now i completely know what you mean. IIRC the 1st movie soundtrack (which i listened to so much as a kid that the tape started to wear out) also has a bunch of songs that have nothing to do with Pokemon, and furthermore don’t even appear in the movie lol. I like pokemon and im glad its still going strong but i wish today’s kids could get this kind of weird trash out of it. I guess the bizarre Ed Sheeran game trailer is the closest thing?

had this album as a kid and would always get my parents to play it for me and i would sing every song hard. shoutout to my parents for not feeding me rat poison cause i imagine they probably thought about doing that at least once

Amusingly, Pokemon came out with an anniversary album last year, featuring the likes of Katy Perry, that has real songs but almost no references to Pokemon.
