Watch Out for Fireballs! 377: Half-Life: Alyx (Premium)

The Watch Out For Fireballs has been silent on the topic of The Half Life for a while now but it's time to wake up and smell the ashes! (I know this is mixing vortigaunt and g-man speak, and I don't care!)

Half Life Alyx is our first major foray into VR and not likely to be our last. Alyx is a great game for this because it's dedicated to being a full franchise entry, a return to form, with few compromises. Though it's a little long and your experience will likely vary (that's the nature of VR), this game is a breath of fresh air.

Thank you Elliot!

Honestly, a top 10 episode of the show, with the excellent topic, engaging recap and the nuanced and thoughtful VR discussion at the end. So glad to vicariously experience the story, since VR is not for me.

I'd also love a link! I have a feeling we'll need to trawl the slack channel, though. In the future would you mind adding in the links in the podcast description?

Does anyone have a link to the YouTuber the guys talk about in this episode? I was trying to find them but the SEO is working against me

I will say (as discussed in the episode) this is the game that convinced me to buy a VR headset full stop and I dont regret it (mostly). I bought a Rift S from a co worker and immediately it got phased out in favour of the Quest (which frustratingly cant play Alyx). But also the Rift S cant play RE4 VRr only the Quest which is an infuriatingly frustrating decision from Meta/FB as RE4 VR would have been my other holy grail VR title. Then I spent a month troubleshooting my PC to even get my headset to work (eventually needing to install an internal HDMI PCI card). Then the motion sickness issues were unbearable so I had to use teleport. Can I also just say that as expected "VR bros" are insufferable? Like in looking up ways to ease my motion sickness all the forums are just people basically bragging about how many hours of VR they can handle in a sitting and you should just get used to it (which basically means play till you almost vomit and then keep doing that until you somehow get acclimated to the headset). Thats all to say that Alyx was maybe the most external work and frustration I've ever had to endure for 7-8 hours of gameplay enjoyment. It wasn't the most economically or mental health friendly decision I've ever made, but im glad to say I played it because many others financially cant afford this or physically arent able to. It is truly one of the most steeped in privilege gaming experiences on offer.
