Bonfireside Chat 236: Deeproot Depths (Part 1)

While acting in the service of Ranni the Witch, we have uncovered a great deal about the Night of Black Knives... including the very weapon that did the deed. With the cursemark portion from Ranni's mortal body, we now turn toward D, Rogier, and Fia to learn where the other half of it went. This draws us deep underground to a ruined, nameless city with a thick miasma in the air. The stench of death.

We recorded this about two years ago, and as you work your way through our backlog you should know that we're not looking to argue on our own Patreon. We don't read and respond to comments from this far back, but I'm replying now because you've done this a few times. This is a system for feedback that only works when we're actively running a show, and we can't be open for corrections like this on a perpetual basis. - K

Giving the gold and silver dagger to the guy sitting 20 meters away whose armour is CLEARLY gold and silver Isn't the big mystery you guys are trying to make it... just because you couldn't solve this nonexistent riddle, doesn't make this bad design.

What show are you talking about where they were down on Bloodborne? Certainly not this one, BsC heaped TONS of praise on Bloodborne. Ds3 they were definitely much more lukewarm on.

Joe Jones

I ended up playing Dark Souls 2 and liking it a lot. Thanks all.

I think Bloodborne has the most overlap with DS1 in terms of world design and clear player-driven narrative. It's a bit quicker but overall I see it as the true successor to DS1's approach. That said, can't go wrong with DeS, DS2 or DS3. All of them are good in their own right.

The show's pretty down on Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne so they won't point you that way but I will! Great games that are faster iterations compared to the original DS1 - they'll likely remind you more of Elden Ring than DS1 at a lot of points but that's not such a bad thing.

I appreciate the Indiana Beach reference there

I’ve only been playing on a steam deck. I don’t have a PlayStation for the remake.

Hi! Long time listener, first time participator. You guys contributed to my trying Elden Ring as my first From software game. I’ve beaten it twice now and am now making my way though Dark Souls remastered. What do you folks think is the next best From game to try if I really like Dark Souls?

I love that you referenced snake island in this. I spent a decent bit of time in Brazil for an old job and one time I heard about “Ilha de Queimada Grande” and I’ve been obsessed ever since. There’s a Smithsonian article from 2014 that says there are 2000-4000 of these snakes (so probably more now), which equates to one snake for every square meter in some spots. A literal reoccurring nightmare of mine. Plus the name of the snake, Golden Lancehead Viper, sounds incredibly badass and also has strong Elden Ring lore vibes.

Fwiw, while Curse does work differently in dark souls 2, basilisks still turn you to stone in that game, it’s just a bespoke status effect called Petrify.

Damn, I love Subterranean Shunning Grounds. Different strokes!

This is in response to the Bonfire Boys saying the ants are numens. I think this is backed up by the fact that the bloated ants are based off of honeypot ants, which are ants specifically swelled to store food for the colony.

Yoav Hayut

It’s interesting, I always read the Numen’s Rune being in the ants that the ants had eaten the numens, which connects the numens to the unnamed eternal city.

If you need more coffin flumes, such a ride is a critical set piece in Goosebumps no. 16 Welcome to Horrorland

I read something else in the title... and that's when I decided to get some fresh air and really change my life.
