Bonfireside Chat 239: Lake of Rot

Get out your hip waders, because we're taking the plunge into the big neon-pink stew that is the Lake of Rot. This area is a bizarre roadblock on the way to the conclusion of Ranni's quest, and there's little in the game that makes reference to what this place is. The Blind Swordsman sealed the God of Rot somewhere down here, and that's all we know. But there are fun details to talk about, from the style of play this forces you to adopt, to the development history that led to us getting the zone as it is.

Hmm. What if the Astel things underground are actually coming from the “False night sky” And I’m pretty sure the Astels destroyed some of the eternal cities which is why ppl see it more malicious than just a random animal

I love Gary’s furious hatred of the Ulcerated Tree Spirit.

Dewayne Kinnard

Fuck that ulcer-causing tree spirit

The Graven Mages are called the Seed of Stars, so as dumb as Gary thinks it is, it is directly connected.

Shaun Higgins

Lobos round table let’s go!

I've been watching Loading Ready Run stream a 4-player co-op randomizer. The best part as far as a viewer is concerned is that when randomizing bosses, it keeps the affix of the name of the boss that *should* be there, so they ended up fighting Margit of Farum Azula in the first little cave, Glintstone Knight and Glintstone Knight Ordovis where the Raya Lucaria key usually is, and very apropos to this episode, Astel, the Fell Omen outside of Stormveil.

Computer, can I get a picture of Lusats head smiling?

Will Owens

Ulcerated tree spirit defender checking in…not this fucking one though

Moth stand-off made me laugh my ass off. Thank you, guys.

I also found the Lake of Rot an enjoyable challenge, especially figuring out how close I can get the rot meter to full without maxing it out. A few notes I made upon first rising from the Shoreside Site of Grace and looking out into the psychedelic rotten goo… - WTF moment: No access to Torrent?! - Desperate moment: Going back to the Baleful Shadow area and scouring every surface for some kind of invisible wall to a different part of the Lake - Most relieved moment: Realizing I could outrun/ignore nearly all of the Basilisks if I moved quickly enough to the far side of raised areas and stood still - Pat on the back moment: Mastering (more or less) the Pests once I was confident I could block most of the attacks with a good shield I still haven’t beat Astel (am experimenting with strategies and spirit ashes after having respecced recently) but am thrilled now to have my own first playthrough right in sync with the podcast episodes. Love this game.

TV Tropers: "It's a mystery why Astels have human skulls until you realize that maybe they grow from the seeds of extraterrestrial -- though human -- Lusats." The reason Lusat looks like Astel is that he *doesn't* have a skull. (The item description for Lusat's crown reads: "This crown replaced Lusat's brain and skull altogether.")

Micah Tillman

I wonder why they decided not to put the lake of rot under Caelid?

in case you weren’t aware, there is an Elden Ring enemy and item randomizer. haven’t played it myself but saw a streamer do it and it seems extremely fun. also as an enjoyer of Dark Souls randomizers myself, fuck the chained prisoners and fuck the DLC dogs

Karl Germ

The stand off between Gary and Moths aka the chained prisoner's dilemma
