Bonfireside Chat 257: Entering Leyndell

Note: An earlier version of this episode went silent at the 35 minute mark. This new export fixes that. Sorry!

Oh hey, enemies that realistically depict ska musicians.

Bonfireside Chat 257: Entering Leyndell

Listening to this episode, a thought occurred to me…in Macross, the ancient race set up a seal to a temple that could only be opened if it detected the dna of two warring species present in the same individual, which would prove that the possibility for peace between those species now exists. Maybe the barrier to Lyndell is something similar, where the only way it can be opened is if the stalemate between warring demigods has been broken, either by defeat or union? I don’t know off the top of my head if anything supports this, but the thought occurred to me during this episode and thought it was an idea worth sharing.

I really enjoyed it, going in blind with no expectations. Fought him on horseback with the Greatsword. Took many attempts, but very satisfying. What a fight.

I loved fighting Draconic Tree sentinel on my Faith/Strength build blind play through. I used Kaiden Sellsword ashes to tank, Lance Charm for bonus mounted damage, and the Greatsword. What an amazing fight. It took me a few dozen tries learning his pattern and iterating on my loadouts and strategy. There were some very close attempts I recorded where head just a few hits from defeat. It was so satisfying when I finally defeated him and earned entrance to Leyndell. Unforgettable moment.

Ooph. That might be it actually, huh. All the other sweetings just keep being reborn happily but not our boy. Well now I feel extra bad about my first playthrough.

So I read the Boc situation a little differently than you guys did (admittedly it’s a much darker read). The way I read it is that Boc gets properly reborn using a Larvel Tear, but even now that he’s human, he still doesn’t feel any better about himself, so he just ends it.

Draconic Tree sentinel was also a huge bottle neck for me on my first strength build. I ended up going and doing basically everything before it( Deeproot, Mt. Gelmir, Ranni stuff) before finally brute forcing my way through it. My subsequent pure faith build pretty much melted him with rot breath and black flame. My sorceries build also had a much easier time, in both cases staying mobile on torrent and barraging him with spells did the trick.

I don't know anyone who enjoyed the Draconic Tree Sentinel fight. Seems like it's second only to the Godskin Duo in terms of bosses that everyone rightly hates. I think if they'd given him much less HP that would probably get it over the line from "slog" to "frantic but memorable." I still have so much I adore about the game but that fight is one of the few where the balance feels broken. It's a rare low point for me.

I'm definitely not looking forward to the Crucible duo in my rune level 1 run, but the buckler parry is pretty OP against these guys and I would class that as a weakness. Also, crucially, parrying them to oblivion is fun. Your points about From not being able to gauge the duo fights correctly since O&S are totally valid, however.

When I first came up against DTS I was sure the game was broken or something.

Fun note, you can trigger the pillar in the Hero’s Grave with Margit’s shackle at a certain point in to destroy the chariots. It gave me a lot of joy to learn that shortcut, since this was also my first Hero’s Grave, and can relate too much to being killed by turning chariots. I unashamedly poison cheesed DTS my first playthrough, I tried coming to him after Rennala initially and was one or two shot many times, especially while mounted. I think the fight is pretty enjoyable now, but it was definitely a major wall my first go around.

Proud DTS cheeser here.

The draconic tree sentinel took me longer than Malenia to beat (these two were the biggest challenges I encountered). Where Malenia probably killed me more, I felt like I was gaining understanding and the fights were fairly fast. Whereas the draconic tree sentinel even though I'd leave, get stronger, then come back I didn't feel like I was getting better at the slog of a fight, just that I got lucky when I finally won.
